in the end he's a depth defenseman. teams will only pay soo much for that.
If we look at recent traded players, i would consider Xhekaj’s value somewhere in between Romanov and Brendon Hagel at the time of their respective trades. Young, cost controlled with upside.

That being said, given where the Habs are in their rebuild, i would not be very eager to trade him for a 1st round pick since his age and profile fit very nicely with what the Habs need moving forward.

Xhekaj can already beat up pretty much every player in the league and surprisingly effective at moving the puck. I think Guhle is the only dman in our org valued more at the moment. He's essentially looking to be the dman version of prime Lucic. Boston used to play with a lot of piss and vinegar because Lucic and Chara could back up the other 16 rats on the team.

He's also 21 and grew up a Habs fan. I don't think the current management would move players like that.

Young tough mobile D who is just scratching the surface who most think is a 5/6 Dman. However he has a unique skill set that is hard to find. Who knows what his potential is? Could he be a #4 and run the PP on 2nd wave? Work on developing a heavier shot from point? He has shown flashes and is still learning the NHL game. No way Mtl gives up on him unless the return is a grand slam. This is not a Denny's grand slam we are talking about lol. I see a younger version of Weber with more mobility. He has a lot to work on but he is going to surprise a lot of people. He has the passion, drive and work ethic. Way too early to give up on him.
Wifi is gonna be Weber with more mobility lol? Holyyyyy

Wifi is a rare beast in the NHL.

Can score, play D, hits like a truck, fan favorite, teammates love him, perhaps the best fighter in the league. Can and willing to even pack your bags for you at Costco. All at tender age of 21 and a rookie.

Why the F would you propose this garbage?

Xhekaj is better than Romanov. This kid is playing his 1st NHL season and looks like he's been playing for 5+ years. Quite the surprised for the Habs. We knew we had something with him but I personally expected him to play AHL this year. The value he has brought on the ice at both ends is not something you see for a guy who is playing his 1st NHL season. He's only going to get better in the next few seasons.

Guhle and Xhekaj are untouchables. Habs will build around them on our back end. Habs very much liked Romanov but we were deep at LD and there was a situation where we could get Dach and we needed centers. That's why he was traded.

This has got to be a joke...While Lafreniere has done nothing but disappoint and underperform since hitting the NHL ranks, Arber has done nothing but surprise and out pace anything people thought he might do.

While I am not saying this would be the same situation with Arber ever becoming a Sergachev type dman, the trade you propose brings the same vibe as when the Habs traded away another young dman for a Quebecois forward with supposed talent and look how the worked out.

So the Habs get a guy who will be a UFA and we have no interest in signing. LTIR is valueless in this scenario. We give up a young D man who has shocked in a real good way the team and fans with what he brings to a blueline that is in shambles.

So this trade makes the Habs worse now and in future. Devils its a grand slam.

Not sure why you are quoting my posts when I was replying to the idea of trading Arber and a 1st for Lafreniere.

It’s an idiotic trade for the Devils too. It makes no sense at all. We get a much worse player in a season the team is trying to win now.

Value wise it's absolutely horrible for MTL, but it also doesn't make sense for NJ to trade away a contributing veteran for a rookie when they're in the middle of a playoff push.

Xhekai could be amazing in a few years, but so could Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec. NJ doesn't need long-term options on defense, they need guys who can help them right now this year and this is clearly a step backwards in that regard.

There's just no reasons for Montreal to trade Xhekaj, they found him, and for once, we seem to do well in the development side.

Xhekaj is a rare breed, is tough and is proficient offensively, you don't trade that, especially when in Montreal's position.

Anyway, Montreal would ask the Moon for him, cause he holds way more value for the Habs than for anyone else.
