He’s definitely better offensively than defensively - still has work to do on the defensive end, and also has decision making issues on both ends of the ice.

He’s big, and hits and is an intimidating pressence but his stick positioning and gaps can still improve, where I find he is caught off guard by speed through transition frequently enough where it is something I have taken note of. He also doesn’t pick the best times to hit. A hit is great - but he at times does it to the detriment to his team and odd man rushes happen as a result. He’s learning though and all of this should get better with more reps. I see him becoming a similar player to what Radko Gudas is.
He's better offensively than Gudas; he's also a rookie and imo, has a higher ceiling than Gudas

Probably going to get flammed for this but here it goes:

Severson for Xhekaj

Devils need snarl (not geertsen)…two devils scouts at the game last night…WiFi is on a team friendly deal for one more year and will be an RFA…severson walks this off-season with current cap & pipeline

Montreal added some wiggle room with LTIR money with injury announcement and gives them a too Dman

Thoughts?
It's wild this kind of thought process exists amongst fans of this sport. I guess if you're a casual viewer i can understand.

The intriguing thing with WiFi is that he his ceiling is undefined. He can be an offensive dman, defensive dman or a hybrid. The improvement in his game has been extraordinary. No one knows what he will become. At worst he is already a solid bottom pairing dman. His upside is intriguing.

He's just a guy. Not the god king of hockey. The Devils can get a rental dman who's just as physical, and who is better, and it would cost less for them. Montreal can keep their HoF unicorn so he can develop into a 60 fight a year dman. Take a breath. It's okay. I don't think it'd be smart for the Habs to trade him either. Why waste the asset hoping you draft a guy who may one day be where he is. Keep him.
where did i say he's the god king of hockey? You're the one who should take a breath. with your smarmy post.
I pointed out he has a unique skill set that every team would like.
That he happens to be Hab, is a problem for some it seems

if I'm mistaken then I apologize. First post read like he was referring to 72 & Xirik wasn't clear he'd be a 3rd pairing on Devils

Well I guess it made more sense to me as I'm a Devil fan and so is he and we were talking to each other so I understood we were talking about him from the Devils perspective
As for the other guy, I read it as that he may have been just calling Xirik a face puncher but that's not how I saw it. He hasn't clarified it though so maybe you're right on that one.

lol no worries. And he doesn't have to clarify, it's a a pretty stupid, sarcastic take

Severson is a good NHL defenseman. Xhekaj might be one someday, but he isn't one right now. I'm fine with the Devils trying to add some sandpaper, but not at the cost of a significant downgrade in ability to actually play the game

That is idiotic. He doesn’t play with Ed. He has been paired with Wideman. Educate yourself son.
"part of the problem" Xhekaj has been his 3rd most common D partner.
* to be honest my original comment was a retalitory one after reading all the comments defending Edmundsons play this season because he plays with rookies(which it seems it's JE that is the problem)
In no way do I think the Habs would trade him for Severson(but also think some Habs fans partake in mind altering drugs if they think it would take Luke Hughes)

No effort at all to genuinely justify why Habs would do it, or to offer any kind of compelling return

Severson has 0 value to tanking team unless seller includes a serious sweetener to provide seller Cap relief,
and really what could that be,
for a very young rookie D already earned his role in NHL..
Flamed because its lazy and irrational 'proposal'

No disagreements here.

Gudas is a great player though and a defender that most teams in the NHL would love to have. There is a reason he has had as long an NHL career as he has.
Agreed. I just think Xekaj is still a work in progress, having jumped from junior straight to the NHL. But what he's shown in the NHL to date is quite remarkable. His progression has been significant and he's shown a willingness to do everything necessary to get better.

He was among the toughest, most intimidating players in the OHL and he needs to learn to temper his aggression and pick his spots - but in a league that has eliminated goons, he has the size, toughness and intimidation to become an integral piece of the habs blue line. He has more goals than Power or sanderson - or even Guhle; He's on pace for 10 goals and 26 assists.

These are not the numbers of a mindless, free agent, face puncher. He has untapped skill

Xekaj would be a 1st rounder right now in a redraft.
first in goals among rookie D..
first in hits among rookie D.
second in the NHL in fighting majors.
second in the NHL in penalty minutes.

21 Y.O, 6'4, 240 who can actually skate and is a legit heavyweight in the NHL.
He's a unicorn if he continues to develop like this.
He's become an untouchable, and offering a 28 y.o UFA-to-be
for him is a ridiculous proposal.

Habs are trying to trade their older D like Edmundson and maybe Savard

His *unique* skillset is he punches faces and is physical. He has 5 goals lmao.

I’m far from a Habs fan, but I’d fly to Montreal to punch their GM in his face if he did this deal.

I got to see Xhekaj in person a few weeks ago. He was Montreal’s best player that game in a game where Montreal got hammered. Guhle had an atrocious game. Barron was terrible. But this Arbor kid was out there hitting everything in sight. Scored a goal. Punched a few panthers in the face. Stood up to Gudas (goon). He was a force in that game. Exactly the type of player every team needs at least one of. Perfect playoff attitude.

Heavy, mean, big, grouchy, noticeable. He’s a pretty ideal enforcer type on the back end. Kid can skate and move well for his massive size. No idea where they found him. Badass scouting I suppose.

If he was traded for a blah rental like Severson, Hughes gets my fist in his face. And Montreal fans likely buy me a fancy steak dinner once I’m bailed out of jail.

I like him! I wish he were a Devils prospect! But he is factually bleeding dangerous chances against right now and takes penalties like he's got a quota to meet. No matter how good he may one day become, no matter how unique a player he is, he's significantly worse both offensively and defensively than Severson right now. That's not an insult, Severson is pretty good!

I'd rather have Severson for a 2023 playoff run, regardless of long term value. If you don't want to make that swap, cool, me neither!

Oh hell no. Even if you think Severson is more valuable, Xhekaj is so unique. He's such an interesting package that he's worth more to Montreal than anyone else.

Bit of an exaggeration? a 3rd pairing D that plays with snarl and grit for one of those guys?

is Montreal giving Florida's pick to NJ as well?

Highest I would go would be Mukhamadullin +2nd
He didn’t say Xhekaj was worth that, but I would agree that’s the kind of absurdity it would take

Montreal has absolutely zero reason to trade him and he’s a unicorn
