I consider that more palatable because it's more motivating, at least to me. You KNOW that if you go in and put in your time, and do your job, you'll be rewarded. That is how it used to work and that is how it should work. Makes for better and happier workers.
Sounds great until you don't get a merit based promotion.

Merit is BS anyway because it's 100% subjective where seniority is 100% objective.

I guess it depends on the work you do, but in my line of work this is about as absurd of a take as it gets.

Then again I take an immense amount of pride in the work I do and the quality of it. I’d never jump into a situation where quantity/time in the seat is more important than the quality of work done.

If you're good at your job it blows. No arguing it though.

I can't get over the subjectiveness of non-seniority based promotions. I can't imagine getting passed up for a promotion while a f*** up gets it because your boss likes that person more. It would be infuriating.

I was passed over for a dumb f*** in my last job. I didn't care, because the company was trash, and my boss was a f***ing tool, and the guy who got a promotion over me was an even bigger tool. I found a new job a couple months later, and I'm still there 6+ years later, with no intentions of leaving any time soon. Not everywhere is like that. Honestly, in the 15-16 years I've been in my field, I've literally run into this scenario you've used here one single time. The one I explained above. And I've worked for massive global companies, small companies, and everything in between...

How does this not work the opposite way? Like, how do you miss this? Life is absolutely LITTERED with f*** ups in positions of power ONLY because of seniority. Imagine a deplorable f***ing imbecile being your boss because he started working somewhere 3 months before you did.

Seniority based careers absolutely suck.

It encourages mediocrity. As somebody who's exceptional at the gig it kinda sucks. No arguing seniority though. Company made ten billion in profit last year. f*** them pay me.
When I was 18 I worked seasonal at UPS one year. The amount of things I saw the full time people get away with was pretty wild. The senior people got all the best routes that were often an hour from the center, two hours window time a day, over 8 is OT. Guys making 120 bucks just driving back to the center at the end of his shift.

I couldn't even exist in a company like that.

Gotcha. I tend to work at smaller companies. We trim the dead weight pretty quickly as we don’t really have a choice.

Never been an issue in my career but I take the perspective of I spend too much time at work to work for someone who doesn’t treat their people fairly. I’d never work for a company that promoted seniority over performance, personally.

Depends on the gig and the contract. I promise my daughter doesn't think my health insurance sucks.

I know multiple people in car sales. The only decent person I know only did it for a year and said he had to stop for moral reasons.

Saw stuff like a lady come in to trade her car saying she had bought it for 30k and paid the 30k so she’s good. He pulled her loan and had 23% interest and obviously wasn’t full paid off. Had to sit down and explain to her what all of it meant and why he COULD trade her car in for a new one, but that she should come back in a year or so when she was more ready.

Imagine doing that to someone. 23% interest.

If they're not for you, they're not for you.

For me, there's motivation to work harder in a seniority based career because you know you'll reap the rewards for your hard work.

In a "merit" based position, there is no motivation to work hard because even if you kill yourself and make tons of personal sacrifices to advance your career, you could still end up with nothing.

With all the shit you spew on here, bro, you can't exist in any company. You apparently aren't capable of just putting your head down, and working, and getting yourself paid.

If you said any of this shit that you've said on here over the last few pages, in an interview, I'd immediately end it and send you on your way, with your resume and contact info going right in the shit can as soon as the door closed behind you. No way in hell I'm hiring someone with the kind of outlook you have on things. Maybe that's part of why you're having trouble with getting and keeping a job? Especially if you're starting in with these types of discussions within a couple weeks or months of joining a company, or during an interview.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but someone as cynical as you, is not an enjoyable person to work with.

You have a skill set that makes that possible. Genuinely mean it when I say good for you.
