whelp, that's life.I don't do well with open-ended goals.
Just reading all of it, you really should chill a bit more and have a better attitude.
Why would you start to get arrogant just because you are good at certain aspects of a job?

I put in 25 years in a seniority based union job and in 2 years 7 months (age 62) I’ll collect just under $36000 a year for life. Before 401k, social security, savings, …I consider that more palatable because it's more motivating, at least to me. You KNOW that if you go in and put in your time, and do your job, you'll be rewarded. That is how it used to work and that is how it should work. Makes for better and happier workers.
Merit is BS anyway because it's 100% subjective where seniority is 100% objective.
So being able to read people is more important than working hard? Thanks for explaining it so clearly. You have this completely ass backwards because of your f***ed up cynical, pessimistic mental state. You're bordering on full blown conspiracy theorist here. Careers, picking jobs, and advancing in careers, is just as much about being able to read people(your bosses/leadership) as anything else. Plenty of companies operate based on merit. Plenty of companies afford extra flexibility to the guys they deem valuable. Plenty of companies reward those employees with promotions and raises based on their accomplishments. Finding those companies isn't that difficult. When I'm interviewing for a job, I'm interviewing the company, the manager, and the leadership at that company, just as much as they are interviewing me.
And even if you "end up with nothing" at a position, you leave that position with EXPERIENCE. EXPERIENCE that goes towards advancing your career at other companies... Working hard and accomplishing goals at a company, even if it doesn't lead to promotions and raises at THAT COMPANY, is extremely valuable.
You see, seniority in a field is actually a thing in pretty much every industry. A guy with 20 years of IT engineering experience is worth way more than a guy with 5 years of IT engineering experience, doing the same job.
You just don't get it.
The next gas station don’t mention the chair. After hired bring in the chair. If they terminate, discipline or make you get rid of it contact an attorney.I hate to break it to you, but not every story of perseverance and hard work, and attempting to overcome obstacles has a happy ending.
You want to know why I'm cynical?
A couple years ago, I went and applied for a part time job at a gas station. I asked if I could have a chair at the register so that could rest my feet because I had a disability. I said I could do the job with that accommodation. They told me no on the spot. I don't think that was an unreasonable accommodation request at all. I would have brought my own chair. I just wanted permission.
I had an interview for a professional position years ago and I asked if I could bring a digital recorder to meetings because I have auditory processing issues and I'd need to go back and see if I missed anything important. I was told that that wasn't possible for legal reasons. What laws are they breaking?
Not all hard work is rewarded, but nothing in this world will be handed to you on a silver platter. You can try to make something of yourself, or you can spend the rest of your life making excuses and tilting at windmills. Why should I believe in myself when there's no evidence to support it?
This is like the textbook definition of toxic positivity culture.
Oh, believe in yourself. Think positively, and good things will happen.
Biggest crock of shit ever told. Biggest scam in the history of scams.
No? What? We were talking about how seniority gets you perks in union jobs, UPS is union, so I gave an anecdote about how the senior drivers got the best routes that paid them just to drive back. Good for them. Are you suggesting they drive back for free?
So being able to read people is more important than working hard? Thanks for explaining it so clearly.
Screw seniority and hard work. Just play golf with the boss and the sailing is smooth!
Thanks for that you banker f***.Alright, spun all of that over to Anything Goes.
Not everyone can jump from company to company. Gotta pay your mortgage.Whoosh. Right over your head. Which is quite interesting, considering you made my point for me in the previous post. It's pretty easy to recognize which companies you should work for, and which companies you should jump ship from ASAP.

I've been employed but not working since the end of February. It's not always possible. You get a new job while you have a job. Figured that was implied.
Many of the best experts in their field realize there's a crap load of stuff they don't know. They're always willing to learn more, to become even better, more rounded experts. No room for arrogance.whelp, that's life.
