I consider that more palatable because it's more motivating, at least to me. You KNOW that if you go in and put in your time, and do your job, you'll be rewarded. That is how it used to work and that is how it should work. Makes for better and happier workers.

Merit is BS anyway because it's 100% subjective where seniority is 100% objective.
I put in 25 years in a seniority based union job and in 2 years 7 months (age 62) I’ll collect just under $36000 a year for life. Before 401k, social security, savings, …
It was only the 2nd job in the industry (trucking) I ever had. I quit the 1st because I saw a dock worker who I thought was a good worker let go because a supervisors kid just finished high school and needed a job. Guy was in his 30’s with kids. I was only 22. My wife just had our 2nd kid and we bought a house.
Merit based employment is at the whim of management. I wanted at least some security if I came to work and worked hard.

You have this completely ass backwards because of your f***ed up cynical, pessimistic mental state. You're bordering on full blown conspiracy theorist here. Careers, picking jobs, and advancing in careers, is just as much about being able to read people(your bosses/leadership) as anything else. Plenty of companies operate based on merit. Plenty of companies afford extra flexibility to the guys they deem valuable. Plenty of companies reward those employees with promotions and raises based on their accomplishments. Finding those companies isn't that difficult. When I'm interviewing for a job, I'm interviewing the company, the manager, and the leadership at that company, just as much as they are interviewing me.

And even if you "end up with nothing" at a position, you leave that position with EXPERIENCE. EXPERIENCE that goes towards advancing your career at other companies... Working hard and accomplishing goals at a company, even if it doesn't lead to promotions and raises at THAT COMPANY, is extremely valuable.

You see, seniority in a field is actually a thing in pretty much every industry. A guy with 20 years of IT engineering experience is worth way more than a guy with 5 years of IT engineering experience, doing the same job.

You just don't get it.
So being able to read people is more important than working hard? Thanks for explaining it so clearly.
Screw seniority and hard work. Just play golf with the boss and the sailing is smooth!

I hate to break it to you, but not every story of perseverance and hard work, and attempting to overcome obstacles has a happy ending.

You want to know why I'm cynical?

A couple years ago, I went and applied for a part time job at a gas station. I asked if I could have a chair at the register so that could rest my feet because I had a disability. I said I could do the job with that accommodation. They told me no on the spot. I don't think that was an unreasonable accommodation request at all. I would have brought my own chair. I just wanted permission.

I had an interview for a professional position years ago and I asked if I could bring a digital recorder to meetings because I have auditory processing issues and I'd need to go back and see if I missed anything important. I was told that that wasn't possible for legal reasons. What laws are they breaking?
The next gas station don’t mention the chair. After hired bring in the chair. If they terminate, discipline or make you get rid of it contact an attorney.

Why should I believe in myself when there's no evidence to support it?

This is like the textbook definition of toxic positivity culture.

Oh, believe in yourself. Think positively, and good things will happen.
Biggest crock of shit ever told. Biggest scam in the history of scams.
Not all hard work is rewarded, but nothing in this world will be handed to you on a silver platter. You can try to make something of yourself, or you can spend the rest of your life making excuses and tilting at windmills.

Whoosh. Right over your head. Which is quite interesting, considering you made my point for me in the previous post. It's pretty easy to recognize which companies you should work for, and which companies you should jump ship from ASAP.

Union gigs can suck. They're not based on merit. The beauty of seniority is that there's no arguing it. Lesser of two evils maybe. Usually can't get promoted past a certain point without becoming a salaried employee. Tried that. Hated it. Just my experience working in transportation.

Not everyone can jump from company to company. Gotta pay your mortgage.

Not always that easy. Pre Covid when WFH and zoom interviews were less common…. I almost missed out on a career changing job because of the amount of interviews for that role. I eventually had to tell them I can’t keep making excuses to not be at my actual job especially if it doesn’t work out. Thankfully they ended up cancelling a few of the final interviews and offering me the job anyway.

Can’t imagine doing that if I had kids and such and couldn’t just blow all my PTO to drive to another office for an interview.

Thankfully I don’t see a scenario in which I ever do an in person interview again and can just schedule it around a lunch break.

whelp, that's life.
Just reading all of it, you really should chill a bit more and have a better attitude.

Why would you start to get arrogant just because you are good at certain aspects of a job?
Many of the best experts in their field realize there's a crap load of stuff they don't know. They're always willing to learn more, to become even better, more rounded experts. No room for arrogance.

The amount of apparent absolutes being thrown around over the last several pages in this thread is mindboggling. My career / performance / job wouldn't fit into any of these purported pigeonholes.

As an aside, I worked for four different companies, same boss and basically the same location with each company. The smaller company kept being bought out by a larger one, and they all decided to keep the department I was working in.

Of course it's always possible. It might take you a little longer to switch jobs, but who the f*** quits their current job before they find a new one? This is almost unheard of. And dumb as shit. Unless you're really wealthy.

The Stanley Cup will be in my hometown this saturday. Sadly, the time isn't in the favour of the fans. There will be no chance to touch it or make pictures. At least as they said already.
I will visit it and at least get to see the Cup, maybe something opens up.

Cup visiting Germany hasn't happened many times and now with Sturm winning it with COL, it's even better.

Edit
Plans have changed and there will be a time when people can get pictures with the Cup. Now just hope I'll be in time, that would be f'n awesome.

Wife out of town. Way too much whiskey last night. I haven’t hurt as bad as I do today in a long while.

Good whiskey, at least.

Noice. How do you feel about your ice? Big cube or regular rocks?

We bought a house in March and it didn't come with appliances and has a handful of projects we need to prioritize over the years.

I told my wife she could pick out anything and everything and prioritize all projects as long as the fridge we get makes large spheres.

Annnnnnnnnnnd I barely use them since I almost never use them with booze.
