Kind of qukrky but have you ever tried the little restaurants that are part of some of the local Mexican supermarket chains? That is as authentic as it gets.

I haven't but you're not the first person I've heard mention this. Feel like that's something I need to try.

Some of my favs:

Taqueria El Milagro - Their tacos may be the best I've ever had.
Canton Regio - Great food, and it's a BYOB place, which is kinda cool.
Big Star - All kinds of amazing specialty tacos.
Del Seoul - Great Korean/Mexican fusion. Their wings are easily my favorite. Kimchi fries... so much delicious food here.

Is the top one a chain of restaurants or a sinle place in Pilsen?

mark up on alcohol is bad, especially for hard liquor - but if someone brings it to you or pours it for you, you should tip for it my man lol..

mark up on food is worse IMO, I can go to my local store and get 4 pounds of cut chicken breast for around $9-10.00...I can make that into grilled chicken breasts/sandwiches the entire damn week, but go to BDubs or wherever and get a grilled chicken sandwich (and lucky if you get a piece that is 5oz or more) that will cost $10-12.00 alone...same with burgers, same with salads, the mark up on food is insane - so if you don't tip on alcohol because you think they jack up the prices, I think it is even worse for most of the food we get.

FWIW restaurants actually make most of their money off of alcohol since it has the highest profit margins. A $40 8oz filet at a fine-dining restaurant probably costs the restaurant $28-$32 when it’s all said and done.

Booze has the highest profit margin. ~25 oz in a standard bottle. Take a bottle of Makers Mark, pretty standard, about $30-$35 to buy a bottle. $11 for a whiskey coke (1.5oz), $13 for a whiskey rocks/neat (2oz), that’s minimum $183 in sales from that bottle that they paid $30 for

For sure. What's a bar pay for a keg of beer? And they're charging $5+ per pint or whatever. Making money hand over fist on alcohol.

absolutely, which I said hard liquor is a big mark up for them - and obviously the cost of preparing a meal vs pouring a drink is 100% in favor of drinks because of how little man power/utilities are needed vs a full staff kitchen. But, if you do the math on certain items, a 5 oz chicken sandwich being charged at $12.00 vs actual food cost of what, maybe $2.00 max for chicken, bun, lettuce, tomato, etc????? that is 600% markup lol....obviously the costs go in there, but for places that really aren't high end or charging top dollar for drinks, this is where they make their money and stay in business for years..a lot of these mom and pop restaurants charge close to the same price for a lot fo their food as more higher end places but are typically much cheaper on drinks...south side of Chicago and out here in Texas seems to be the norm.

So if you go out for a $12 burger and have 3-4 beers at $4-5 per you’re tipping $2 on $30?

With Ray here. Why would you remove alcohol?

Servers tip out on alcohol, you boob.

Why would you remove alcohol? Is it self serve?

My mistake. I definitely tip on alcohol unless it's disgustingly overpriced in which I would adjust my total percent.

I take tax off and tip 15-20%.

Please put the pitchforks down

Their tacos are amazing too. If i'm hanging on the south side drinking that's where I go. Grew up in worth. So that's a staple. There or Del Carmen in Worth.
hit up Jalisco's on 87th street Burbank - my old stomping grounds..my blood stains are probably still in that parking lot from 2am drunk brawls lol...

Jalisco is good. El Solazo on Pulaski is great. Best barbacoa I’ve ever had.

Birrieria Zaragoza specializes in goat off archer and Pulaski and it’s really great. Fantastic home made tortillas.

now I want a f***ing burrito ...lol....Mexican food blows out here, don't ask me how but it is all Tex-Mex style and so many places just have tiny ass tacos or pathetic attempts at burritos..Jalisco's burrito is the size of your head, loaded with meat, f***ing miss that place...not out here, BBQ for sure but very sad on authentic Mexican places out here.

Gotten that a lot too. All through highschool I hung with oak lawn kids cus that's who I played hockey with. Great burritos. Giant ones. No need to tell me any south side joints. I grew up on the south side, I've been to em all.

Not sure I’d want to ever live there but it’s very high on my places to visit for the food and wine alone.
