Anyone else concerned about Tavares?

I suppose if JT was making $8.5 a year and had helped us win a couple of Cups, we wouldn't be complaining as much.

If ROR and Tavares both made $6 million or so (as their current cap AAV ads up to just under $13 million with all the retention) it makes sense. At $11 million, we get the near PPG numbers which is better than not, but the 5 on 5 play quality is always the concern.

That is essentially what Tavares has become a $11 mil powerplay specialist because his +/- suggest he is a liability as a negative player at even strength.

Now I agree the PP is important as special teams are often key to a teams playoff success, so hopefully JT continues to produce at a high level when Leafs are up a man and need a goal to win a game.

We all know its his footspeed that is the biggest factor as the game gets faster and he slows down. As a centre his has more defensive responsibilities and he he behind play and that is what leads to all the goals against at even strength. The solution might be to move him to the wing in his later years now and put a more reliable defensive player like ROR in the middle to reduce the goals against issues.

Tavares is closer to Dave Andreychuk than Doug Gilmour, if that makes sense. But you can still make that work if you don't rely him on in a heavy 2C role.

14th in points for C.
46th in ESP (lots of wingers on there though).

Anyone arguing that Tavares is not that good cause of the PP should be arguing Mac > McDavid because Mac is going much more at ES.

I would keep the argument to Tavares and not draw generalities from other comparisons.

For me, my biggest criticism of Tavares is really down to the quality of his playing ability across the full 200 feet of ice at 5 on 5.

Just one example. You compare him Spezza last year, a much older guy on league minimum, similar reputation as being not that fast but still possessing elite hands.

Who did you trust to transport the puck up the ice efficiently over distance through the neutral zone? Spezza could still wind it up beautifully and did so on the PP2 regularly. With Tavares you probably don't expect him to carry that puck the distance of blueline to redline without major issues leading tot breakdown of possession or resulting in a broken play.

And there are a few complaints in the Tampa board, but paired with a lot of "he was our best player for a decade" type of comments.

You're talking about Stamkos? His 5 on 5 play quality has had major ups and downs over the past number of years too.

I honestly don't care if he becomes a PP merchant as long as he continues that in the playoffs, we need our PP to go off

Agreed. Take the elite center expectations off the table, dial back the 2C responsibilities and have ROR babysit and allow him to muck it up like a Hyman. On the PP, you let him do the JVR thing and hope he scores often.

Nice OT goal (first in over three years).

I don't really mind him on the wing, where he doesn't seem to hinder Nylander as much, but if Knies can produce at 2LW there's a good argument for JT at 3C.

These threads always end up looking ridiculous… JT is going to play his best hockey this postseason.
Fantastic overtime goal tonight.
The thread didn't just end up looking ridiculous. It was ridiculous right from the start!
Heck, we're still getting silly comments about our elite PPG center, talking about "babysitting him" or him "hindering Nylander". What a joke.
Beautiful OT goal. Dead tired, and still turned on the jets to win it.

We are almost past the point of concern and besides 1 year of Kadri clearly better. You also must know why he's not here too and Hyman on McDavid line whose out scored him that you would have kept. You speak like you know we lost out on a player but I can't seem too see who.

79 games 36 goals 79 points including the game winner after being stuck out there for half the OT, actually over half because it didn't go the full 5 minutes.

Tell me again why I should be concerned about Tavares.

I'm more concerned about Samsonov because he's taken a couple shots that have caused him to get up slowly.

Stop playing him in games you don't need to.

JT found some energy and scored a big goal, but don’t forget Samsonov bailed them out after they gave away the puck and were caved in.

Yeah, it’s literally embarrassing on our own board… the difference in volume of posts between game wins and losses is telling on these threads.

If they’re not whining, complaining and throwing hissy fits… they’re not interested.

Back around 1970 our high school had a guest speaker in, he was a professional race driver, don't remember his name, heck I don't think I remember more than 10 names from that time, even family ... anyway he said, "When you lose say little, when you win say nothing."

The board has a variation on that, "When you lose bitch and moan and carry-on like it's the end of society and when you win go watch something else."

The volume is more down to the back and forth that happens after a loss more then anything else.
Some like to discuss why they lost while others like to argue that isn't why they lost.
Seems pretty normal to me.

Thirty-six goals and seventy-nine pts in seventy-nine games shouldn't be a concern at this point. The PP goal franchise record is icing on the cake. I feel like we're so used to poor contracts and aging players that we started being pre-emptively disapointed.

Anyway, I'm mostly here to comment on those nifty mittens on that OT goal last night. It was beautiful and all the more impressive given the length of his shift and how exhausted he and Nylander were.

Willy had chased their guy back enough that he and the D changed, so JT was the only one still out.

He's always had great hands.
