The "why" is pretty clear. Perhaps he should moon security guards every off season.

Moon Security guard = Rocket Richard trophy

No Moon Security guard = 27th in the league in goal scoring. you know who else is 27? John Tavares. You know who else did not moon a security guard in the off season, John Tavares. Coincidence? I think not.

What lesson did we learn here?

Yeah, I'm going to say Matthews has failed to build on his career year last year and has fallen back into the pack. I don't see it as a good thing or just be ready for the playoffs. He doesn't really look dialed in or have the same energy levels game to game. Most of his peers keep gunning for elite numbers, even his own Leaf teammates so this is really no time to be complacent like he's some reigning champ waiting until the games really matter.

Don't think he's the heartbeat of the team this year. Maybe seeing the ROR, Marner and Tavares line will ignite something competitive in him this year. But probably not. He's just been too inconsistent based on his personal standard. It's a down year.

I don’t know why, but his shot now is no where near as good as it used to be.

One Matthews tendency that has been very ineffective for me this year is his overstickhandling in transition. Just looks like too many touches east west while moving north and it seems to kill his momentum and isn't opening up any ice or backing anyone off. You almost want to see him just simplify and just shovel it forward on the backhand and pop out the hip and drop the shoulder and cut in.

I'm concerned this board really expected him to win 15 Rocket Richarchds in a row.

Why do we tell ourselves he’s the best in the business and then downgrade expectations?

Like we’ve finally gotten one of the best players of an era and we just want to give him time off and rest him. Such a precious approach.

Uh you think our best player being our 4th best player isn't an issue in an all in year?
No, With both JT and MM on the same team its incredible that someone is better than them. Just consider yourself lucky to be alive now and be a Leaf fan.

Very very concerned. In the playoffs you need uoud best yo be the best.
There may be a physical issue, arm? Shoulder? Or leg?
BUT, it may also be head! 3 games ago when ROR showed up, AM looked terrible, maybe passed, over shadowed, replaced, whatever, he did not accept the challenge.

Arm, leg or head. Get it fixed...NOW, I want a cup.

The safe bet is there's likely something lingering with him this season.

This is the case for most years of his career then.

I can't justify a 15x8 contract to a guy who can't stay healthy as a young man nvm into his 30's. Unless he has a monster playoff, the best organizational play is a trade IMO

He's also top of the league in takeaways and blocked shots....

He's top two in the league for blocked shots among forwards, and top ten in takeaways. That's pretty impressive.

With all of that being said, I'd be lying if I didn't admit I'm a little concerned. He has looked a little off offensively all season. Maybe it's injuries, maybe it's fatigue and waiting for the playoffs to begin, who knows.

Last year it felt like he could score at will. To put a finer spin on it, I'm not worried about AM in the long term, but in the short term, we're heading into the postseason in about a month and a half or so and we're going to need our best goal scorer playing to his potential if we're going to beat Vasilevskiy.

Make no mistake he is still a great player but his best days are gone. Paying him one cent more than he currently receives will be an overpayment.

LOL

So let me get this straight. The best days of the Leafs' youngest forward are behind him?

Take a lap. lol

Careful what you wish for though. Matthews in a down year is still the best centre production wise the team has had since peak sundin 20+ years ago.

Capspace doesn't score goals

If he remains healthy and if he continues to score at his career pace, he will break Ovie's record.

Graph below goes back to 2010.

Wonder if Willie sniping is taking scoring chances away from AM? Mitch was more likely to defer to AM. Willy is more likely to go Top Cheddar every game. Maybe coach Not gonna line match, should separate AM and WN?

I stated his best years have gone. Unless Mathews becomes the 1st player in history, nobody has scored more goals in their 2nd 8 years than the 1st.

Ovie?
