I'm concerned this board really expected him to win 15 Rocket Richarchds in a row.
1g 3a last 10 games this is an error on my part

6g 2a in the 10 before those this is an error on my part

12 pts in 20 this is an error on my part

so yeah I'd say there should be some concern this is not an error because it is clear he's struggling

I sincerely apologize but if anyone wants to continue pointing out my honest mistake please feel free if it makes youfeel better, when you get home!

Are we thinking the Leafs are putting him out there knowing he's hurt?

I very much doubt it.

He isn't playing with Marner anymore 5v5.

I don't read into it as much more than that, and the fact that consistent 50 goal seasons are an incredibly hard feat for even the best goal scorers to acheive.

Lots of players play through minor injuries that might be nagging. He might have something that will not get worse but will also not get better until he has minor surgery or gets fully rested.

He’s saving himself for the playoffs by taking wrist shots at half their normal velocity.

Whatever it is, and it IS something... must be a situation where he cannot make it worse by playing.

Generating nearly nothing on offence, but really still able to play strong defence. I thought his compete was good tonight, and he showed a couple of bursts but Minnesota was tight and didn't leave many gaps for him to exploit... not that he has been lately anyway.

Ok so the Leafs could rest him so he's 100% but aren't? Doubtful..

Now if it's something he's fighting through that requires surgery, well, that wouldn't be good at all for our long-term hopes for this season.

A tear in the shoulder or a break in the wrist doesn't get better on its own over the course of a season of hockey and playoffs, it can only worsen...

It could be something like this:

Sidney Crosby Discusses His Wrist Injury

I honestly think they rested him before the ASG to see if it would get better and it hasn't. It's also something that won't get any worse or he wouldn't be playing right now.

I wonder if its not possible to give him more rest and see if he doesn't get better because he certainly doesn't look anywhere near like his dominate self from last season. Now that the Leafs have O'Reilly, having Matthews out for abit isn't going to affect the team nearly as much so maybe it'd be good to give him some rest if it might not help him get better?

A lot of posts, stating that Matthews has an injury of some sort, but I am not sure that is the case here. I fully believe that Matthews will not be a Maple leaf starting next season. He’s going to do the same thing that Matthew Tkachuk, and Johnny Gaudreau did with Calgary. he is going to leave Toronto. If I had to bet, I would say that he ends up in LA.

Wonder if Willie sniping is taking scoring chances away from AM? Mitch was more likely to defer to AM. Willy is more likely to go Top Cheddar every game. Maybe coach Not gonna line match, should separate AM and WN?

Willie has been outshining Matthews lately, but as long as we're winning it doesn't matter other than Matthews needing to get caught up to speed for us to be 100%.

seeing an elite player play rather mediocre hurts

then again, we saw when matthews was out that the team misses him.

he's no longer a goal scorer or playmaker, but solid two way center who can win a few puck battles in the d zone. which is nice to have. solid second / third line center.

OH NO HE'S GONE 2 GAMES WITHOUT A POINT WHAT WILL WE DO????

Forget the fact we won both

WHAT WILL WE DO!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Yes he had a few missed games in between, but this is far beyond 100% AM and there's nothing you can say to change my mind.

lol you're always fear mongering this into existence but at any rate it doesn't really matter if he plays like this anyways. can always use the cap space to get players that are healthy and want to be here and contribute.

Elite players don't save themselves for the playoffs.

He's definitely nursing something that hasn't healed and probably won't heal until the offseason.

I agree. I don't think people realize that an elite player lacking motivation is a really big issue. Elite players are elite and they find all sorts of crazy things to keep the fire going to be their best whenever there's a game. Obviously there are off nights, but you don't see McDavid, Draisaitl passing up an opportunity to torch the league and stats pad.
