He sure has been this year Marner, Tavares and Willy have all been better by a lot
Even so who is most likely going to score you an OT goal in the payoffs. It's 34 for me.

Willie has been an assassin in 3vs3 OT but he needs to show me he can do it in the playoffs.

I would pick Willy or Marner right now. Last year Matthews for sure.
He just looks so disinterested this year

Tell me you haven’t watched the games without telling me
I've watched every single game, and I'm not sure how anybody that has even watched one game could conclude that Matthews was our 4th best player this year.
There's more to hockey than small sample point totals and flashy, memorable plays (which wouldn't even put him 4th anyway).

Tbh, it’s most likely someone like acciari or jarnkrok

The depth usually is what finishes it out

But I see what you are trying to say and I agree

Short answer yes long answer no. I think he knows another scoring title is out of reach and he’s saving himself for the playoffs. I predict we see beast mode papi this post season

Yea you are right, hes third. Firmly behind Marner and nylander
58 games isn’t a small sample size, it’s the entire season lol. Nylander has outproduced him on the same line as Matthews. Scoring goals aren’t flashy, yet Matthews isn’t even the best on the team for that

I actually have Tavares ahead of him this year. I hate Tavares contract in the context of how it jams the team up but I give him full credit for his very good play this year

Nylander has not been better than Matthews.
Even in a world where Nylander was as good offensively (he's not), and we ignored Matthews' impact on Nylander's production, he's not even in the same stratosphere defensively.
This thread really demonstrates who just looks at point totals and flashy plays to evaluate their players.

He absolutely has.

Marner + Nylander easily better. Debatable with JT who is outscoring and producing him
I’d agree with this, I put it Marner, Nylander, JT, then Matthews, taken in totality. I don’t really see that up for much debate? That’s controversial?

It isn’t the production either for me, it’s the jam, he seems to play in spurts but rarely takes a game by the balls and is the dominant force we know he can be. He’s still deadly, all it takes is a split second, but how often has it been him leading the team when we need it? The guy can score 35-40 with ease, perhaps that’s the problem. He certainly doesn’t look like Captain material atm.

Recently I remember reading an article on Ovechkin where Caps players marveled at the injuries he's played through without anyone knowing about it.

I've gotta think that Matthews has to be playing through something as well when you look at everything.

I also have to think it's something that requires a lot of time off so that won't happen. Hopefully he can fight through it come playoff time as well.

I'm not worried. This is part of the game.

It really is like speaking to a wall with you

Matthews impact on nylander….it’s the other way around, Matthews is pacing for what he is because of nylander not the other way around. Matthews hasn’t been good enough this year, he’s being outplayed by nylander

I can’t believe you are arguing that

Matthews is not our 4th best player this year. Our top 3 are easily Marner/Nylander/Matthews, and the order is debatable. I swear people just read goals and assists of players and call it a day.
And the others just read XGA and call it a day lol

No, the reigning MVP is not pacing for what would be his worst pace in years because Nylander is carrying him. Good lord. :eyeroll:
Matthews has been injured, incredibly unlucky, and tasked with being the entire defensive presence on his line, and he's still only 0.05 P/GP behind Nylander while being multiple tiers better defensively. I can't believe this is even a discussion for anyone.

Lmao at everyone just flatout saying "No, not one bit"

Are you f***ing serious?

The guy has been a shell of his former self ALL YEAR.

He isnt half of what he was at this time last year. Playoffs are basically next month.

How are you not even slightly worried? I dont believe you. At all.

42 goal pace, 92 point pace. It ain't as bad as you're making it sound. There are approximately 700 NHL players behind him right now in points and he has several intangibles that put him higher than that as an overall player. Come on. He's a little off but he's still gawdamned good.

He's arguably been a better defensive player, but no question his offensive production is down compared to previous seasons. I think it's a combination of playing through nagging injuries and not having Marner on his wing.

We are a more dangerous team this season though.

Ah yes, the patented injury excuse, it comes up everytime his production takes a downturn
It happened in 2018 boston
It happened in 2019 regular season
It happened in 2021 in the Covid division
It happens whenever he plays worse

And the fact that nylander is even outpacing him at all is the problem. He should be a 100+ point player year in and year out

Him playing like he currently has will not be enough for us to get past the first round, he has to be better.
