Anson Carter unveils Alpharetta Sports and Entertainment looking to bring expansion team to Atlanta

Wait…I thought according to posters here in the other thread that the Forysthe group already had an iron clad guarantee or super duper secret handshake deal with the NHL already? Should somebody tell Anson to stop wasting his time with a different proposal in a different location?

Once again all we have is media posturing and PR attempts to get proposals energized. Once again the NHL has made no actual statement except that Atlanta would be interesting if the league ever decides to expand. Which given its huge population growth, goes without saying.

The idea that the NHL is on the verge of a return to Atlanta is still so far from being a reality. Both the celebrations and outrage should be saved for actual news…

I didn't know Anson Carter had $$$ like that to be honest, even if he's a minority owner that's a hefty sum

It shouldn't really be lost on anyone what the NHL is doing either. Atlanta is one of the blackest cities in America, and has a rapidly growing wealthy population. Atlanta 1.0 tried to capitalize on their fanbase by bringing in as many black players as they could. Didn't really work out - but now there is much more diversity in the league, at least one or two minorities per team, and a lot of elite talent in the upcoming drafts.

Just feels like it isn't the same situation it was 20 years ago and Atlanta has a better shot of working now though, but I'm also in favor of relocation before expansion.

Anyone wanting more NHL teams should be forced to watch 82 games of the Sharks, Ducks, Blue Jackets and Blackhawks from the past 2 years.

There isn't enough quality talent for this. As a ducks fan it's like watching an AHL team every night. Stop this madness already.

The other group -- Krause Sports and Entertainment -- presently has a Memorandum of Understanding with Forsyth County that will be voted on by the board on 26 March 2024. That would provide $390 million to help fund the project in south Forsyth county, approximately six miles north of the location Carter's group is proposing to re-develop.

Most folks (myself included) thought Carter was involved in the Krause group somehow, maybe as a minority investor or buy-in, so Carter's announcement yesterday was seen as a bit of a shock to some, and quite welcome to others (also myself included).

At the end of the day though, you're right about one thing: There's still some distance to go for the league to return to the Atlanta market. However, the fact there are multiple groups interested in bringing the league back to Atlanta isn't anything to shake your head at. What it does is demonstrates exactly how much interest there is in the market. It could also spur a bit of a biding war between the two parties, which you know the league would love.

All in all, things look far more promising here now than it has in a very long time.

I don't disagree that there is momentum to do this and I am fully on-board with Atlanta getting another chance - I just think we are in that phase of grandiose PR statements and publicity generation so I find it amusing when each new shred of Twitter news is met with either "the NHL's return to Atlanta is imminent!!!" or, on the flip side, "the NHL is a JOOOOKE LMAO".

I'm not even saying the publicity generation is wrong...you need to get folks on board. Just that there is a long road ahead that will no doubt have many more twists and turns...at the end of the day, if that results in the ATL getting another franchise, that would be fun....hopefully as the Thrashers 2.0 because I think that was a beautiful identity but I'm sure there will be all kinds of local talk about what a team should be branded as...

Spot on. I had known of the Carter group interest for a few years, so the Krause announcement was the surprise for me at the time. But now I'm even more surprised Carter is still going forward with his opposing group/bid when the Kraus group seems 3 steps ahead already.

Totally agree, however, there is some reason for excitement. Couple reasons:

1) Instead of just vague tweets about interest, we have two groups specifically named and, supossedly, have met with the NHL. Could mean nothing, but if true, that's big momentum.

2) At least one of the development sites is moving dirt and has stated that they can't build an arena without expansion being a done deal. This would insinuate that a decision is close.

Hey, I get it. It can get a little old, and the publicity-generating tactics can even spur a bit of undue excitement. Carter's press release said he's been engaged in these talks with the league since 2019, so he's also quite familiar with how much time this can take.

I don't think anything is imminent here, but I do hope to see the league return sooner, rather than later. It's hard to not be excited at the possibility.

The better plan would be to relocate Arizona Coyotes and then once they have the arena, allow them to "expand" and bring a team back. Basically a franchise reset.
That will get us to 33 teams, which is too imbalanced for some, so we'll need to add another team to get to 34, which will

* Still be imbalanced for some and we'll need more teams to get the "right" balance for them, and
* We have to put the right teams in the right places for geographic balance or else things are imbalanced and we can't expand, and
* Any expansion dilutes the talent level in the game and make it less entertaining and no one will be interested and the sport will die, and
* Once we solve relocating one team, we'll find another team that should be relocated - preferably to Quebec City, or Hartford, or the GTA - and we'll keep doing that for a while until finally every team is above average in revenues and no one is struggling.

It's Schrödinger's Excuse Box.

You'd have to ask the complaining fans themselves why the idea of an Atlanta team is so utterly horrible. It's difficult, though, as they never give a straight or consistent answer and cross-examination only gets you circular logic and anger.
Sure, that doesn't make them jealous, though.

Just fix the coyotes situation before bringing in another expansion team...
At this point, the Coyotes arena situation is out of league control, and has encountered a fate even worse than that: Government purview.

However, I don't think the Coyotes have to have anything right now for the league to move forward on other business matters. So far, Smith (Salt Lake) and Carter (Atlanta) have now made formal requests to start the expansion process.

I'm not much for betting, but I do believe there's gonna be a considerable amount of news once the season ends. The Coyotes land auction could happen in late-May or early-June, and I'm sure the talk of the summer will include both Salt Lake and Atlanta in terms of expansion.

Pagnotta has tweeted several times now, "Salt Lake 33, Atlanta 34". While a tweet from an insider means little to nothing, one thing is clear: Ready or not, expansion is coming. Where franchises end up is anyone's guess, but a second player in trying to bring a team back to Atlanta is certainly demonstrating the promise this market truly has, even if others choose to believe otherwise.

I'd be willing to bet he is a very very minor partner and they brought him as the "face" of the operation, given hes a former player.

His career earnings pre tax are $14,250,000. Not sure what he makes at TNT, probably a good chunk but definitely not enough to have a significant ownership interest.

Rapid expansion ultimately worked out from the ‘90s. Let’s go to 36. It makes us different, brings in more eyeballs, and player parity is already higher than it was in the past- league can still use a few more meh players to get goaled on.
