Anson Carter unveils Alpharetta Sports and Entertainment looking to bring expansion team to Atlanta

monumental mistake going back to ATL. I'm an ATL Hawks fan and I can tell you that city only shows support if the team is winning. And then barely. And that's for sports they actually understand and like. Hockey will fail miserably there just like it did the other two times they tried this nonsense.

for some of you who don't know the area... Alpharetta is 30 miles north of the old Arena/Downtown. Depending on traffic, this could take anywhere from 50minutes to 2 hours.

Alpharetta is an affluent area and filled with young families, as well as all the surrounding areas. People steer away from going downtown (old arena location), especially during rush hour.

I live in the surrounding ATL area. If a team were to come here, I am way more likely to go to a game in Alpharetta than Downtown.

I'd be willing to bet he is a very very minor partner and they brought him as the "face" of the operation, given hes a former player.

His career earnings pre tax are $14,250,000. Not sure what he makes at TNT, probably a good chunk but definitely not enough to have a significant ownership interest.
He also owns a record label, so he's got that money coming in too.

The hawks are the worst performing pro sports team we have and they still have the 18th highest valuation in their league.

Another great reason to come to Atlanta.

this is great news. I'm glad for another US based team. Unfortunately, Canada will never get another team until the dollar strengthens or becomes on par with the US. (which will never happen in the next 20 or 30 years or more ? ) With low value of the canadian dollar, owners and Bettman are not stupid, it does not make fiscal sense to add another canadian team. They just would not last. Quebec is a perfect example of a small hockey market that cannot sustain profit in today's NHL franchise ownership.

and if it wasn't for Trae Young the arena would be half empty every night and the valuation would be much lower.

Ha...."only shows support if the team is winning" yet you're a Hawks fan. LOL.

Anyway, the Braves were already winning in Turner field (14 straight division titles) and have much better attendance since moving.
I'm not a soccer fan, but since winning the championship years ago, my understanding is that United sucks yet they still average almost 50K a game.
Your Hawks suck, yet they still hover around 100% sold out most games.

So...you're wrong.

So what? There are only a handful of markets in each league that support a team when it's trash. That's the exception, not the rule. The New England Patriots were bottom 5 in attendance this year.

LOL Braves can't even sell out early round playoff games.

Hawks do suck, but they have a super star who sells tickets. And they have been adopted by the local hip hop community which gives them the "cool" factor. I doubt an ATL hockey team is going to have either of those advantages. They might get a superstar eventually, but I doubt the hip hop people will ever embrace the team/sport.

Is that a joke? Braves have been top-5 in MLB attendance over the last several years. Playoff games have been sold out including standing room

And Trae Young is hardly selling tickets. Super star?? LOL...little too much credit there. Also, great way to back off and try an excuse..."cool factor". Whatever the reason, who cares. They're selling tickets while they still suck.

So.....you're still wrong.

Hopefully goons make a return. The talent pool is already stretched. Two more teams won't help. But with how much they charge its lucrative.

I may be wrong about the Braves as it appears they've turned it around from the apathetic days when they failed to sell out 15 straight playoff games upon moving to Turner Field.

But you are wrong about the Hawks. Trae Young is a super star and he 100% is the reason they sell tickets. And the hip hop factor is a massive part of that. Rap stars sitting courtside at every game,, doing the half time shows and giving court side interviews mid game. It is without a doubt a factor in the team's recent popularity.

On the other side of the coin we have two actual examples of hockey teams failing in Atlanta. Has there ever been another city in the USA that has lost two pro sports teams in the same sport and yet was awarded a 3rd try at it????

What Winnipeg situation? Winnipegs situation isn’t even that bad. There’s like 5-6 teams in winnipegs situation every year.

This maybe you specifically. This maybe the mix of jingo and group talk. The Thrashers move to Winnipeg, a large group of Canadians laughed at Atlanta for not supporting the NHL. We hear news that Winnipeg is having trouble selling tickets, Canadians are saying, "it's ok." Hypocracy

You would find that most cities "only show support if the team is winning" because very few people actually want to see a poor product, not with how much tickets to these events actually cost. Bad sports teams and terrible ownership might sell in some markets, but not even Chicago put up with "Dollar" Bill Wirtz.

Furthermore, "this nonsense" was attempted downtown, where few fans of the sport live. There's a reason both Krause and Carter have their arena plans north of the city, rather than downtown: It's where the majority of the Thrashers season ticket base lived. If data were still available from that time, I'm pretty sure you'd find that Flames fans largely lived north of town as well.

Trae Young didn't even make the all-star game (he was a replacement). He's not a super star and I seriously doubt people are paying hundreds on tickets to see him. But again, it doesn't matter. They have good attendance while they suck... so you're wrong.

And you were wrong about the Braves.

And you're wrong about the market. You need to read up on why the hockey teams left (and the fact that one of them was 45 years ago).

Wait, did he really say the Braves failed to sell out 15 straight playoff games upon moving to Turner Field?!? That literally is the most false statement ever uttered on this site.

Yes, they once came up a thousand tickets short of a sellout for a 4 pm weekday start time for a first round game in '99 or 2000 in the third largest stadium in the majors at the time (52,000+), after going a full decade of consecutive playoff sellouts. So, for all time thereafter, Atlanta is a terrible sports market. Got it.

Trae has been to multiple all star games, has made all NBA, has led his team to the conference finals and is the first player in over 40 years to lead the league in scoring and assists in the same season. He has also led tghe NBA in assists in something like 3 or 4 years. He was also 2nd in all star fan voting for his position. Just because the coaches and media don't like him doesn't take away from the absolute fact that he is a super star and a ticket seller. The place was empty before he got there and now they sell out despite, as you point out, them being a mediocre team at best.

Sure, but I don't think his net worth is at that point where he can be anything more than a minor partner.
