Very weak example as Matthews deflected that shot.
This is one of the most brutal goals given up in the whole playoffs. Game 7. That's some Patrick Lalime against Leafs goaltending when we were the under dogs.

I put that thing on 0.5 speed it isn't deflected in any significant way by Matthews at all.

Edit- 0:31-0:37 on 0.5 speed and pause at 0:35. Matthews finishes his swipe and doesn't touch him at all. Puck is released after. I mean it's clear cut not debatable.

Freddie had 6 strong starts in a row at times in Toronto, too.

Consistency, mentality, and health were his major issues here. I'm glad to see him doing well, but it was the right decision to move on from him - the goalie we are seeing in Carolina isn't the same one that we saw here, and suggesting otherwise, is purely malicious & an attempt to goad reactions.

Yes because Jack and Mrazek have such a history of consistency, mentality and health.

The Leafs' goaltending has been good enough to win a single playoff series in 5 consecutive playoffs. Stop looking in goal when it was a team failure. When your goalie's save percentage is well north of 92%, you've had a chance to win. I believe some have no idea how it looks when a team at least capable of making the playoffs is actually let down by its goaltending: 2005-06 through 2009-10.

Thank you for Freddie. I hope Mrazek works out for you guys as well. We still love him in Carolina.

Why are you thanking us? Freddie was a free agent. He chose to sign in Carolina.
For not signing him back? Even though it was obvious that both sides were done with each other…

yea I don’t really get what the other guy is talking about

Carolinas defence made Ayers beat us with Andersen in net.

Just saying.
Leafs defence was off the charts in the North division and Andersen looked like an ECHL goalie.

I think Andersen more than proved by now last season was an anomaly and he was just hurt and mentally fried. I'm personally enjoying watching him prove those who said he was washed wrong.

No doubt Andersen would still be letting in softies if he was a Leaf. He didn’t have the mental capacity for this market IMO. Carolina is completely different (also have a much better defense too of course).

Let’s see how he does for them in April before lamenting letting this guy and his back breakers go.

Andersen won game 5 for us in 18/19. Stopping 28 in 29. Leafs just have to close out game 6 and we're off to round 2.

They give up 40 shots instead. Andersen saved 37 of them.

No one showed up in game 7 so even if Andersen only let in 1 goal there's no guarantee we would have won. That would have just forced OT.

Jackets series we should have started 2-0 right out the gate. 54 shots against and Fred stopped 53 of them.

But somehow Campbell surpassed him because he beat up on habs flames and canucks and sens

I think it's more knowing our floor with Andersen. Assuming he stays healthy (well go 0-82 if he replicates last season issues) we will never have to fear making the playoffs and know we will have a chance in round 1.

This Campbell / Mrazek tandem has a lot of question marks still. Leafs didn't need Campbell in games 2-4. It was pure domination. Leafs were showing why Habs shouldn't even be in the playoffs.

When they did finally need a goalie to steal a game Campbell was no where to be found and had a save % less than .900 over those 3 games. The only way Campbell is better than Fred is if Fred is injured.

Yup.

Campbell had the easiest series I have seen for a Leafs goalie in the playoffs vs MTL.

Compared to WSH/BOS/CLB series it was a cakewalk in terms of both volume of shots and quality of chances.

Fred and even Reims stole multiple games for us in the playoffs.

You're not suggesting the Cane's team defence is superior to the Leafs are you?
Anybody with a half a brain knows that Carolina's defense has been vastly superior to ours the last few seasons.

They're also undefeated and Buffalo and Detroit are pushing the Lightning, Bruins, Leafs into wildcard hope zone.

I was honestly worried about the Leafs poor start, but then there's other teams shitting the bed (Colorado) that are truly loved and raved about, and then we have the Habs...........And you have to admit, as human beings, Habs and Leafs fans probably feel very similar about their team when things aren't going well.

Campbell was pretty darned good last year IMO. And Freddy, wish him the best of luck, seems like a nice guy. I doubt he's gonna go 82-0.

Not directed at anyone I quoted btw. Just saying maybe we're jumping the gun a bit, NHL is season is starting out a bit odd and needs more time.

I have no problem with Campbell, he's fine, but I feel the need to constantly defend Freddy against a fanbase that unjustly turned on the goalie who carried our franchise through a number of years when the defense was non-existent.

Oh I'm a massive Freddy fan.

Always was. I've always said he is by far and away the best goaltender the Leafs have had since the Cujo/Belfour era.

But I also hate seeing people dumping so hard on Campbell so fast given that he was pretty damned good last season.

That's all.

Nobody dumped though. He's being given a fair shot to win the no.1 job or at least to show it wasn't a fluke. Just not going to blindly put him in Andersens tier when he doesn't deserve it yet. He has to earn it.

I kinda thought he earned a shot last season to be given this season to be the #1, and then there's the elephant in the room, we can't afford anyone better (we're all aware of this)

Imagine we re-signed Andersen with our current cap structure.......people would be losing it, even more then they are now.

Carolina is doing good, Freddy is doing good (because he's good)......?

Leafs management have some stuff to work out as per usual.

Yeah for sure the logistics don't work. I'm committed to this tandem. Just can't stand seeing ridiculous statements made about Fred that unfold quickly when you lay out the facts.

My goal is the cup so it's in my best interest that Campbell shows that not only is he in Fred's tier, but he can surpass it. I'll be rooting for him the whole time to do this. At this moment there's not enough there to say he has, but there's enough there to give him a long leash to prove he can do it.

I hope that is a reasonable middle ground.

Anything is reasonable. Like I say I loved Andersen, and I know he could let in some softies, but there's kinda no perfect goalie.

I think goalies are like a "gut feeling" for fans. I just have a good feeling about Campbell for some reason. And he's the best option we have and maybe that's unforunate, but it's what we've got so might as well wish for the best.
