I know he had a terrible second half but any chance we qualify saunders? My thinking is if he accepts you have your DH at 17mill(expensive but we're willing to give that to JB to DH) who can also fill in in the OF. If he rejects and gets a multi year deal from someone we get the pick.

I highly doubt we qualify Saunders because 1-17 million for one year is to much for what he brings at this point and 2- We probably wouldn't get a pick back from him because qualifying him would kill his free agent market.

I maintain we need a culture change - and that can be done by moving on from Bautista. He gets on a lot - something I think the Jays lacked last year, but he's a distraction that isn't needed (IMO) for what he now brings and he tends to have selfish atbats. Focus on EE and depending on what the Reds will eat salary wise, look at Votto or another player who fits the mold of a table setter for EE and Donaldson and Tulo etc.

That's my opinion - and I don't know what I'm talking about really, so do the opposite.

What exactly are you looking to change the culture to? Or is this more of a vague "change" kind of like the Obama presidential campaign from 2008?

why would you change the culture of a team that made back to back ALCS?

Rogers Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi joined Bob McCown and Damien Cox to discuss his takeaways from Toronto Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins’ season-ending press conference. Davidi was interested by Atkins comments that the organization wants to win now, and that they’re making Jose and Edwin a priority. He discussed the progression of Blue Jays’ prospects, and what a new Rogers CEO means for the club.

Sounds like a guy who is trying to sell Season Tickets to the faithful.

You don't qualify him. It's not worth the risk of him accepting. I'd offer him a 2 yr 16m total contract before tossing a QO his way. I still like him as a potential DH/Corner outfielder, but not at the price a QO would demand.

I think what pretty much everyone means when they say "change the culture" is get rid of Jose Bautista. Which is stupid, obviously, because his attitude shouldn't be anywhere on the list of problems for this team.

If you want him to leave because of his age, performance, and contract concerns, then sure, that's fair. But the "culture" thing is weird, considering everything the guy has meant to the organization.

I just hope one bad year offensively doesn't taint his tenure and fans opinion of him as a whole. He was a superstar when we desperately needed one after the Delgado/Halladay fallout. Brought validity back to the jays along with passion. Even if it was misdirected at times.

Bautista is the best Blue Jays position player ever. We should remember him fondly.

Saunders would accept instantly, and proceed to run down the streets of Toronto in excitement that we were stupid enough to give him 17 million dollars.

By the sounds of it he loves playing here, it was his dream as a kid to play for the Jays, his 2nd half was not good so he's not likely to get that much in the market anyway, turning down a QO would absolutely kill his free agent market with a pick being attached, so in the event that he would given a QO he would accept almost instantly

The biggest worry was that he struggled to hit the fastball. He, like Tulowitzki, was an elite fastball hitter but drastically fell off this season (Tulo last year). Both he and Tulo have strengths in that one has elite plate discipline and the other has elite defence, but both aren't as impactful offensively anymore because of their inability to make consistently hard contact with the fastball.

Thoughts on bringing Colabello back to camp?

He played pretty bad in Buffalo this year however if we lose EE and nothing materializes with Votto then maybe a Colabello *Break glass in case of emergency* wouldn't so bad. Lets not forget he hit .320 last year.

We should forget it. He's not an adequate option going forward.

File these links away. They contain the free agent leaderboards for the 2017 MLB free agents.

...because your uncle Joe cares about you, wants you to be informed, and wants a little less "why the heck did we sign JA Happ" and little more "Vote Quimby" this offseason.

Thank you good sir

If you believe in the walk rate bump Sean Rodriguez is a sneaky option to play 1B + utility infield if needed.

Mulling over some of these stats that Quimby so graciously provided us, A Pagan-Pillar-Saunders outfield wouldnt be so bad or Pagan-Pillar-Bautista depending who we retain or not.

Pagan had a .974 FP in Left last year, .331 OBP, 12 home runs, 495 AB, 2.1 WAR (Saunders had a 1.4 for comparison)

and he's a switch hitter :naughty:

No, we probably should forget that. He hit .320 in a monstrously outlying career year fueled by a freakishly high BABIP the likes of which you never see out of freak years that are basically unrepeatable, especially out of players that don't have either a) big power or b) blazing speed.

In terms of the "change the culture" angle after making it as far as we have in back to back years, here is my 2 cents...

It's not so much to change the culture or you're unhappy, but you want to take the next step, we've kind of struggled a bit when the homers aren't there for us, the goal should be to augment what we have and address the needs of the team.
