Every GM in the league would’ve retained the three young guys, and would’ve signed JT if given the opportunity.
it’s about how they react to what the core is showing itself to be that will determine their fate
He's already stated until he's blue in the face, he's not moving them and will go down with the ship. We're now just in the wait and do nothing phase. Exciting times.

Because "other GMs would have done it" doesn't absolve you from blame when you are the one who oversees the project. Your job is to be better than other GMs.

He’s not publicly going to say he’s shopping anyone. That’s not how they do things.

Dubas isn't going to make any "good" moves. He's not trading one of the $11 contracts. What's he going to do, trade for Eichel? A guy about to lose his job is going to trade for a guy who can't play this year? Um, no. Willy is outplaying his cap hit. The only guy who could conceivably get moved is Rielly. And that will be a mistake because Rielly is a consistent playoff performer. The draft picks are in jeopardy. Don't stare at them too long or they will disappear.

huh? Rielly should be traded already... He's not resigning here and we can't afford his 8 mil price tag... The problem is we lose good players for nothing way too much. Trade Morgan Trade Marner.

Yeah, if we're losing him for nothing we should trade him. Agree. But we shouldn't be in that position.

Way too early to etch in stone any lasting evaluations since none of the double digit superstars have scored a goal thus far but holy moly this team does not look good. While Bunting has played well, the other forward additions have played on the level of league min. bodies IMO. Kampf is krap (4 SOG in 90 minutes of ice time plus he ain't that good defensively). Kase is marginally better actually generating some offensive opportunities. Ritchie is slow and bogs down his superstar linemates. Sandin and Liljegren are game but constantly making mistakes especially Sandin who is trying to do too much. Holl seems to be struggling mightily this season like he's lost a step. That fight Simmonds started last night was utterly pointless and shameful, he wasn't after a player who had done something to a teammate, it was just a mission to start a fight. And Campbell was a bit of a sieve which is especially troubling.

Is it too early to wonder whether this team has quit on another coach?

All that and the realization that the record is 2-3-1 with none of Tavares, Marner and Matthews scoring in those 6 games. Perhaps we have forgotten about this in a few weeks when the stars get rolling.

How many GMs inherit a promising young core that has made the playoffs 2 straight years? He inherited one of the best situations for a new GM and the team is probably worse than when he got it.

Probably?????

They're leaps and bounds worse. Lol.

Dubas's off off-season game plan was all about keeping the faith with this core.

But maybe what he thought was a vote of confidence was just dooming them to failure. This group might just have too many demons, too much baggage to reasonably overcome.

I bet Sheldon Keefe regrets that speech he made before the season about coming out of the gate like it's the first round of the playoffs. /s

Changes do need to be made on this team. Keefe needs to start with the top 2 lines. Shuffle those top 2 lines up and if that don't work then Dubas needs to look at either making trades or some kind of move.

They all want out of Toronto. Matthews, Marner, Nylander etc. Clearly it's not a fun market to play in especially with the media problem we have here. Just look at their expressions and mannerisms in their interviews. Just get me the hell out of here is written all over their faces.

Babcock is happy to be gone, and the rest of the guys are waiting to join him

They keep bringing in these non-hockey corporate suit guys that are collecting paycheques and padding their resumes

And so it goes, round and round, year after year decade after decade. Guys don't want to play here and that is the #1 problem right there. That's why this team can't and never will win. Not until this city becomes a desirable market to play in. Which is probably never

Why? Because he had 2 good games? He's been invisible for the last 3.

What bugs me is Karen Keefe screaming at the top of his lungs during the playoff speech last year. It was cringe worthy. Not exactly a "win it for the gipper" speech. He's screaming and the players are looking at him like "what the hell are you saying".

is it really the city? really? Look at other markets...The Yankees, the Dallas Cowboys, LA Lakers, etc. plenty of other high stakes and media pressure in other cities, but they find a way to win something. These players are all millennials who don't want to work hard, want things handed to them and complain when things do go their way. They asked for an earlier start vs SJ to be 'ready' for PITT, look what happened! They don't want to wear suits..the management caves. They have all their toys now and just want to hide out in the treehouse now. No team mentality here just all ego.

Draft picks alone won't achieve anything.
Draft picks don't create cap space.

They have to move salary in order to bring in salary.

I would have no issue moving draft picks for long term improvement in the team, the question is who goes with the picks to open up space?

won't be able to afford him next contract, or maybe you wont want to because if he puts up another Rocket or two the guy is going to want 20m

If the Leafs haven't won by then I'm moving him him in 2023
You have to trade Matthews, Marner and maybe Nylander before July 1, 2023 if they don't have new deals because the first two have a NMC and Nylander has a M-NTC that begin on that date.
