I don't think the team is stuck with Keefe, he can be fired at anytime, as he doesn't have a NMC.

Extra 2 years would be severance package.
Does Dubas get the ok to fire 2 coaches in his short stint as GM?

"core".

Matthews is here forever.
Noone will trade for Tavares.
No way anyone moves Willy.

That leaves Marner.

won't be able to afford him next contract, or maybe you wont want to because if he puts up another Rocket or two the guy is going to want 20m

If the Leafs haven't won by then I'm moving him him in 2023

It starts with Dubas and the culture he's created. You need someone outside the organization to get an
Unbiased view.. Right now it is what it is you don't make harsh moves. Shanny should tell Dubas he can't trade 1st or 2nd round picks. Dubas and Keefe have until the end of the season to turn it around or they are gone. If Shanny won't pull the trigger if we have a sub-par year then he's gone to.

This is the year for me where strides need to be made or changes (probably big ones) will need to happen. Believe me I am not thrilled with the direction we are going but it still doesnt change the fact that the players themselves who have had a coach fired already are under preforming. Dubas bet on Marner Matthews and Tavares which on paper seems like not a bad bet but they don't seem to be working. If this continues much longer Dubas has to make changes or he is gone. New gm will still have to deal with 3 big contracts who arent getting the job done.

I would add I am not a fan of the style we play...soft and perimeter and that is on Dubas/Keefe.

Fair enough.

It just seems like some around here would rather we keep Kyle even if it means we never win. What's the point in keeping a gm if his team can't win a single round of hockey?

Fully expecting to get up this morning and see that Keefe will be starting his job search tomorrow and that they would be introducing Bruce Boudreau as the 40th head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs

a little bit of Gabby trivia. Played for the Leafs under "Punch" Imlach the last SC winning coach of our beloved Buds
Dubas doesn't get a new coach hire, and for that matter, neither does Shanahan. If you are going to fire Keefe, then the entire front office should be going with him.

Not anymore. For the most part that era is gone. Brady Tkachuk, Hughes and Pettersson have all gotten major contracts just recently. They're not waiting until their next contract window to get paid bigtime.

We can complain about how much Dubas paid to our best players, but really as I've said before only Marner is the only I dislike most. Tavares got a contract you'd expect when you're trying to sign a star free agent. Nylander caught alot of flak for what he signed for and now people are happy and think his contract is fair if not even abit of a bargain. Matthews' contract to me is alright. Maybe its slightly high, but maybe by a million at most for me when he's your best goal scorer and is your franchise center. Marner is the only one that's overpaid by 2-3 million although if he could return to the player he was when he first broke into the league and that Leafs fans fell in love with, then his contract won't look as bad as it does now.

Sure some young players are getting big money before winning anything but none of them have gotten even close to marner or matthews money. Even Nylander got more than pasta who had a 30+ goal season.

Dubas also front loaded their contracts and gave them tons of signing bonuses.

Matthews asked for 13+ on an 8 year deal but settled for 11.34 x 5. Why was he so unwilling to help the team out?

Marner only got 10.9 x 6 because of auston too.

Dubas has been very bad at negotiating.

I thought they might look at other options, and that Keefe was interim.

Keefe had good success after Babcock, and then this past season things looked (to me I thought a mirage) on paper like they were poised to make it further in the playoffs, but then Tavares went down and the 1st. line disappeared.

I really think they need someone from outside the organization to come in and give a fresh perspective on this team. They have had Keefe in the Org since 2015 and they all see the game the same way. It has not worked the way they thought it would and now they are stuck. They simply believe if they keep battering against the door hard enough it will break for them...that is just stupid.

You need someone else to come in and tell them the mix of players is maybe incorrect or the usage is not correct. Having the same guys who messed things up be responsible for figuring it out by themselves is not smart. Dubas keeps talking about how he likes different opinions etc...yet he has a yes man as his coach. When he did have a differing opinion (Babs) he submarined him by getting him tiny Nick Petan instead of a player like Bunting (who Babs would have loved).

This Keefe comment after last night's game really is revealing;
“Give Pittsburgh full marks. They were fast and competitive all through the game. They don't make it easy on you. At times we were careless with the puck, they made us pay for it.”

- The "full marks" is deflection - not that we were terrible, but boy, was the AHL team great!
- "They were fast and competitive" - again, deflecting from the fact his team was not, at all.
- "They don't make it easy on you". Ugh. How about making it difficult for them?
- "At times we were careless". No, they were careless over and over and over. And even down 7-1 they were careless, apparently hoping to bury themselves deeper.

Again, no accountability. No anger, no bite, no calling out the absolutely brutal plays half his team made, nothing about how the $40 million dollar stars are MIA, just ... "Well, they (the Pens) deserved it" is what you hear from a weak coach, an afraid one or a defeated one, and right now he's coaching a weak, afraid and defeated team.

Agreed....He looks like the players won't listen to him anymore and is afraid of saying something that he can't take back. The whole dress code thing is just a perfect example of giving little cookies to players that really have not played like they deserve them.
You want to remove the dress code? Great...do it after they win 8/10 games and everyone is playing their guts out. What does Dubas do? He gives them the reward ahead of time. Such a millennial thing to do...it really is.

Tfw the Leafs think they can get a rise out of you by playing a shit October but you're sitting on 2013, a half decade straight of first round exits, and the 2016-2017 Atlanta Falcons

I personally would keep the entire coaching staff until a new GM has had input. I think that is pretty common in pro sports. Even if they don't keep Keefe, they may choose to keep certain trainers or other people. Just fire Shanahan/Dubas now, hire a talent agency to do the GM search instead of another ex-hockey player, and let the new GM make the decisions.

He was hired by his buddy, who didn't interview a single soul.
They made an in-season change, I would hazard to guess that at least 2/3’s of the time when that happens you bring someone in from within the organization. the coaching hasn’t been elite, but it’s hardly the issue. I highly doubt Keefe preaches not going to the hard places on the ice, in fact I know for a fact he does, at some point it falls on the shoulders of tbe guys in uniform collecting the fat checks

The rebuild was going very well until he decided to change course 3 yrs into it. Unfortunately Dubas's vision was very far removed from what came before him. Its like it was going well and they started a whole new rebuild on the fly. Shanny had the right idea and second guessed himself.
Seeing as Kyle has been with the organization for the same amount of time before Lou, as with him before taking over I don’t really buy into changing of philosophy. This has always been the vision of Shanahan. Lou and babs were here to bring quick credibility back to an organization that was very much lost at sea beforehand, and in Lou’s case to groom Kyle for what they hope is a long run in charge.
