I know im in the minority, but I like it.

I was hoping we’d draft trouba instead of lindholm in 2012. He plays a style I like having on the team. Honestly wouldnt shock me if his numbers lstarted to look good once he gets acclimated. Its hard to play your best when your fanbase isnt in your corner and you know your time is limited in the situation.

I think he’s exactly what the team needs and if he can get back to somewhere between ok and good, I think it was a worth while pick up.

Also it always cracks me up when fans complain about the money aspect as if they’re the ones signing his checks. We have plenty of space and hes only got a year and a half left. Oh and we’re not competing for anything other than to be above .500

Don’t see the point in rescuing the rangers. Dude has been playing like a pylon. There’s a reason they’re so desperate to unload him.

On the trade

[It came together] rather quickly. As managers we're always talking to teams and seeing what's going on, but this came together rather quickly. As I mentioned to you before, I've been searching for a right-hand defenseman to help with our right side. Obviously we've got a lot of left shots and it's been difficult at times for them.

When a player of this caliber comes available, I wanted to help our team and I think he improves our team. He gives us a lot of depth on defense now. He's a really good penalty killer. I think he's got some underrated offensive skills that probably haven't shown in the last year or so. I think overall it gives our team a lot more rigid physical play to the rest of our group. And for me, as I'm trying to make this team better, that is part of how I want us to play. I want us to be really tough to play against and he certainly adds that element to our group.

On Trouba's leadership skills

You just don't become the captain of the New York Rangers and not have excellent qualifications on and off the ice. I spoke to Radko [Gudas] this morning and he was excited. I think [Trouba is] going to be able to add another layer of leadership to our entire group and with a different voice. I think it's important. And in speaking with Radko, I think our group's really excited about bringing Jacob in.

On Trouba's game

He plays a more stay at home style and with our left side, we have a lot of offensive defensemen. I think they're going to complement each other really well. We haven't really decided who he's going to play with yet. That's a work in progress to see the chemistry, but I feel very confident that whoever we put with him is going to be very good.

On the Ducks defense

Well, right now I think it's important to get a right hand shot. You can be flushed with the defensemen one night and then the next night, you're not. It's just something that is part of this business. We're going to manage it and manage it in a real development manner, looking at that with every single one of our young guys. It's going to provide some more competition within our group, which is healthy, and that's how you get better.

I feel really comfortable with a really solid D core now, and it's at a point now where it's going to get competitive. We're going to develop and have these guys play hard and compete to be in the lineup every night, which is, like I said, a good thing.

On the team's season so far

Well, I think that obviously there's been a couple games we've let slip away. Some of that stuff is youth and is some of is we're still finding that consistency on a night in and night out basis to do the things that our coaches are asking them to do. We're still working through that process, but we are getting a lot better. We've improved a ton and we still have a long ways to go, but we're going in a really good direction. And with that direction, I'm really happy with how things are going.

People in the main forum are melting down and crying about how unfair that the rangers got bailed out again. To us ducks fan, this trade is virtually meaningless

I don’t know that anyone is complains about Trouba getting the money. I think that thought is Verbeek should not have been the one adding draft picks to get the Rangers out of cap hell. Low round draft picks aren’t super useful, but Verbeek doesn’t always spend them wisely. Also, while you don’t need to win every trade, this was absolutely not a win.

I have to admit I’m bemused that the people who want him to capitalize on taking bad contracts think this is doing that.

I’ll reserve judgement until I see how trouba looks.

Maybe he plays really well with zell lacombe or Mintyukov and helps bring out their best…

I’d consider that a win if our young dmen are comfortable with him on their pairing.

I don’t give a shit about a 4th round pick really… and the cap hit is kinda irrelevant right now.

Vaaks was never going to get a real shot here, and needed to send a roster spot…. He was always the excess lhd

Can we not recover value from him at the deadline next year?

You just lost me, Pat. This answer is so entirely disqualifying that I almost shot coffee out of my nose.

How can you be "really happy with how things are going" when your team is dead last in the division and third-worst in the conference?!

This tough love routine of blaming youth for poor performance is tired and unfair. Your coach stinks. You stink. Your veterans stink. If you're "really happy," the Samuelis need to seriously re-evaluate your worthiness to stay in that role.

In fairness though, look at what happened in NY. Publicly trashing the team can destroy a locker room. He's just saying platitudes that are meaningless.

I agree the Rangers should have had to add a pick. That being said, if the Ducks received a 4th instead of trading one, it doesn't really change how I feel about the trade.

Maybe if it had been fewer than six years since our last playoff appearance, I'd be willing to agree that they're platitudes. But the emerging picture I see is that he really has no idea what he's talking about. Great, he went out and traded for an $8M/year d-man. But our need is up front. Who's going to score goals?

But he doesn’t have to trash the team to answer the question truthfully if he feels things aren’t going well. He could just stop at “we’ve improved a ton,” which is true.

Anyway if he really is very happy at how things are going then you have to wonder if it’s not Cronin but Madden he might get rid of.

I think I posted something like this last week or so - That it’s completely possible that Pat is pretty satisfied so far.

As bad as the Ducks are playing in the last couple games, there needed to be some move.

Replacing Cronin would have been better, but we gave up very little. Vaakanainen was not going to be long term. Rather this than moving Zegras or McTavish, despite McT’s poor play this year.

I’ll wait and see if Trouba revives his career with the Ducks. Only issue would be if Trouba turns his game around and Verbeek re-signs him. That would be the worst scenario.

Could very well be. Pat’s statement yesterday was I’d say pretty supportive of the coaches too. He didn’t even have to mention them.

I don’t know that we have improved “a ton”. I think we had an easy schedule, and the goalies played extremely well.

His coaching system has gone directly back to where he started the season as well. We had 20 points in 26 games last year, we have 23 in 25 this year.
