I actually applaud this deal.

Trouba is still a good top-4 defenseman and now being in a ‘small’ market may ,are him better.

ot it’s another RHD which we desperately need. The guy was a captain for christs sake
I was totally surprised in a good way to see that he’s only 30, I expected him to be 32 or so.

One thing Trouba has stated more than once is how the news/media attention affected him. It's entirely reasonable to say that the Canadian market in Winnipeg and the New York market are intense. Not having that pressure and knowing your partner has lots of opportunities here in Southern California should go a long way. If he simplifies his game, provides good leadership, and plays clean, this seems like a safe bet.

The main complaint is young players sitting. I can't imagine Verbeek feels that their top players develop by not playing for long stretches. Letting guys overripe and earn spots is not a bad thing. If all the young players end up outplaying Trouba, that is not a bad thing. I just don't see how the team suffers here.

Dunno much about Trouba besides his flying elbow. His CF% has dropped significantly for the past season and a quarter. I hope his psyche gets better when he is with us to improve his play, otherwise it feels like another attempt at finding an impactful, veteran RD heading on the downside of their career. The other 30-year old RD, at the time Verbeek snatched up, was Klingberg. So glad Klingberg turned down a multi-year contract with Verbeek at the start of the FA period.

Anaheim needed more punishment on the back end and Verbeek got one. Except, it looks like he isn't hitting much this season. He is blocking a lot more to where he becomes our leading shot blocker. So there's that. The physicality and shot blocking may benefit our PK.

As for our PK unit, they've made 180-degree change in the past eight games. In those eight games, they went 20/21 on the PK, or 95.2% PK eff.

Trouba looks like high event hockey from the Stat Card guys. (Source)

Here's Vaak's scorecard, a low level event player in a good way. (Source)

Yikes, 8 million… Hopefully Trouba isn’t going to fall off a cliff even more than he has like Bieksa did in his final years…

At least this means it’s less likely that Verbeek’s going to be handing 5 year overpay contracts to UFA RHD like 38 year old Petry or 35 year old Savard. Someone take away his checkbook and glasses please.

I bet he plays much better with us and I could see us resigning him much cheaper. That’s the combo I’m hopeful for anyway.

At the very least we get to watch him and Gudas commit crimes every night. It’s better than nothing at this point.

I like the move in a vacuum since we desperately need some toughness, but as others here have said, I'm not sure it's good to be giving up anything of value (even if just a 4th round) for Trouba at full boat.

My other takeaway here is that unless Gaucher turns out to be something decent, Verbeek completely fell on his face in the Hampus trade.
