IMO if Canes make Morrow and their 1st available then it could trump any offer the Devils are willing to make.

Disagree there. Hotlz draws way more attention to me head-to-head. The advantage the Canes have based on what each fanbase have said on here (which isn't much of a metric :) ) is that they would be more likely to make a guy like Jarvis available.

What is San Jose even looking for when it comes to getting a return? picks and young greener prospects? or picks and younger prospects that are ready to step into the NHL now?

I'd be willing to give up 1st + Knies + 2nd if it meant he's extended; or one of the younger d-man in Sandin/Lilly if it meant keeping Knies.

I think Toronto has the assets for Meier, and should be willing to give up Knies or whatever it takes. I just can’t figure out how they fit him into the cap situation

Yeah with the Nylander renewal coming up, it doesn't work.

The leafs bottom 6 is pretty weak. Doubling down to add to your top 6 when the team is already extremely cap heavy with the big 4 forwards makes no sense. A big shutdown D-man and some help in the bottom 6 is what the team needs.

Unless it's a major shake up and some money is going out the door like Rielly, Timo would probably mean the end of Nylander in Toronto.

I don't think any of the offers on Meier are that enticing right now. If they were, I imagine he'd have been moved already. Vancouver knew the NYI offer for Horvat was as good as it was going to get. SJ apparently hasn't offered to let any team speak to Lemieux so nothing is that close right now as I see it. If either of CAR or NJ had offered Jarvis or Mercer and a first and a B prospect or pick my guess is that SJ would have picked one by now. As an aside, I tend to agree with those who suggest that an extended Meier does not seem to fit the CAR model. He will be a market UFA contract extending several years beyond his peak. Plus paying the premium price in assets to add him. Buffalo makes more sense to me than Carolina as a landing spot if NJ doesn't get him.

The Leafs wouldn't be loading a top 6 they would do the Pens model and have a franchise forward eating up bottom pairings all day long along with two first lines.

Leafs don't need to add to the defense at all. It's covered. IF an add was made, it would be another lybushkin type player but then Leafs have 8 NHL d.

I also don't think people realize the Leafs are in amazing shape with the cap. They have 50+ million in cap space 2 years from now. Year after that, Tavares deal expires, and the cap is expected to jump massively the next 5 years.

They have flexibility to rebuild the team however they want with the cap. They have flexibility to move either Matthews or Marner before trade protection kicks in as well as Meier in this situation. They could fit everyone in, retool and sell off pieces, or completely rebuild. Dubas has done an amazing job in this regard.

I dont see a path without Knies. Hes already a step down from a guy like Holtz so the add is real on top of that.

That doesnt get it done for extended Meier . Devils offer of 1st > Leafs 1st.
Holtz > Knies . Devils could add one or more of Sharangovich , Bahl , Okhotiuk , Foote , Mikhamadoulin, Foote.
Amd no way in hell SJ does Sandin /Lilly instead of Knies …..

I just couldn't wrap my head around the ask for Chychrun. Would rather pay less and get a lower profile guy to fill out the D. Phoenix is holding out for top whack and may just end up stuck with him.

Meier? If Knies and a first is what it takes, maybe some cap additions to make the numbers work, is what it takes, I say go for it.

Why is the Devil’s first better than the Leaf’s first? Leafs never get out of the first round, while the Devils could be in the finals.

Leafs are not getting Meier.
1. They dont have the assets to out bid NJ , Canes , Sabres .Those teams will be paying for an extended Meier .

2. Leafs cannot extend him without moving major pieces around or letting key pieces walk like Nylander or magically dumping Murray and Brodie. Im sure teams are lining up for a goalie that is hurt all the time amd am overpaid older Dman . Meier would be a rental. Is Knies , a 1st and another pick or prospect worth that for a rental?

3. Who says Meier wants to extend in Toronto?

There's little difference in pick value here. If the season ended today, the best case for New Jersey's selection would be 24 and the worst case, save for a Conference Finals appearance of course, is 28. For Toronto, it's 23 and 27. For Carolina, it's 27 and 28. Even Vegas is 25 and 28, atm.

It’s not conventional thinking but I say this as somebody who is most decidedly not a Leafs fan…I can definitely see a world where Knies is a better NHL player than Holtz. I’d actually prefer him. Not so much because I’m that down on Holtz but because I’d be really bullish on Knies.

I defintiely do not think Holtz is a tier above Morrow or Knies at this point in terms of projection. In todays NHL, I’ll take the bet on guys with a great combination of size, athletic ability, skating and high motor.

So I don’t think the Devils package around Holtz would be a slam dunk over a Morrow or Knies package - depending on the “extras”. Mercer and Nemec of course are ludicrous to bring up, that I will agree with Devils fans. And by the same token, Jarvis from Carolina. Mercer and Jarvis are just too established at too young of an age. Whoever posted Jarvis+Morrow+high picks has lost their mind.

Horvat is the template. Meier is better so maybe an extra pick in there. But a really good prospect who could be ready by next year, a youngish roster player and pick compensation including one guaranteed 2023 1st + others seems the place to start here.

Assuming the standings stay as they are now with NJ ahead of Toronto, the only ways that NJ's pick is better than Toronto's are:

* Toronto makes the conference final and NJ doesn't

* They both make the conference final and NJ loses.

Is Meier a LW or RW? and is there much difference in play on either side? Daily faceoff has him on LW

If he's RW I guess I would be fine with Mercer being part of the deal as long as that means the trade is only Mercer +1st and perhaps + Okhotyuk/Bahl

If Meier joined the Devils with Mercer still with them it would look like

Meier
Bratt
Mercer

Mercer on the 3rd line would be nice with his ELC and RFA but in the end that would be a luxury. We'd Still have Zetterlund, Holtz, and Thompson to fight for that 3rd line spot.

adding meier and having two very deadly lines > 3rd line Mercer, at least to me.

If I understood right from the threads in this forum, the TML showed "significant" interest in Meier but are not willing to move Knies or the first rounder.

Am I missing something here?
