That's the structural this team will need, regardless of the shortened season issues. Carlyle expects a level of work ethic that would be unsustainable if he was rolling 3 lines with an emphasis on top 6. He will emphasize balls out short shifts, cycling through all 4 lines. While we don't have a lot of top end talent, we have the depth to roll lines like that.

doesn't he lean on his top players? i've heard that he likes to play his top guys a lot

I have read that Carlyle was less than impressed with Connolly so far after Wednesday's scrimmage. With little time left, he might find himself in the press box early. (Lineup must be set to 23 by Friday noon)

He will probably go with the familiar top lines to start the season. Then fiddle with the line up after the first busy week.
[pre]
Lupul. Bozak. Kessel
Mac. Grabovski. Kulemin
JVR Kadri. Frattin
Komorov. McClement. Brown[/pre]

Steckel/Connolly

problem is, Carlyle likes to match lines. And Komorov-McClement-Brown would likely be the shutdown line. The Bozak and Grabovski lines would be your scoring lines. Leaving JVR-Kadri-Frattin roughly 4-5 minutes of ice time per game

Lolwut? 2nd and 4th line can act as shutdown lines. Carlyle basically did that last year. Kessel and Kadri lines will get the sheltered minutes.

And thats fine IMO. With so many games coming up in a short time, might be wise to try and roll 4 lines out fairly evenly, especially at the beginning of the season.

Everyone keeps acting like Carlyle is going to run this team like he did in Anaheim in 07 when he wont the cup. Thing is this isn't the same team, with the same talent, and this isn't 2007.

The Moen, Pahlson, Niedermayer line was effective because of who those guys were, what they could bring. It also allowed him to get good matchups with his top line where he had talent like Selanne, McDonald, Penner, Getzlaf and Perry. This leafs team doesn't have that top end talent that gives RC that luxury.

He's better off taking advantage of scoring depth, which is something we do have.

There was talk when the lockout ended that the rosters may be expanded for the 1st few weeks. Does anyone know if this happened?

Look at 2010-2011 Ducks forwards ice time.

At least we can be confident that the Leafs have depth!

I took a quick look at the depth charts of various teams (contenders and otherwise) and we appear to have above average NHL ability throughout the organization at this point. What I mean is 20-21 forwards that can slot into the lineup in various roles...So there's that?

That said, it is absolutely not the time to have a veteran get in the way of a promising young players' ice time...especially when the young guys have 20+ high level professional games under their belt this season!

Orr simply can't make this team. I love the guy, but one-dimensional players are a thing of the past. Looking at the top 'fighters' last year there were many more Prust, Brown, Dorsett types that Orr, Parros types. He's played less than 40 games in the last 18 months, so I would try to get him to the Marlies and actually play him 3rd line minutes...If he can produce (quality 12 minute play) than I'd consider getting him back up. Being is the best shape of his career doesn't mean he's added another dimension to his game.

Connolly is by all accounts a great guy and has ton of skill (when he wants), but there simply is not a role for him. If he could unquestionably provide a better game than Kadri or Frattin, than there is a case for keeping him, but other than that, I say take the first offer that comes your way. He cost the Leafs nothing but money in acquiring him.

Steckel to me would be a good 13th forward. He'll likely be called into action in Game #3 of the season anyways, so I don't see a concern for him here. I'd move him if a good deal came along, but he does add size, defensive awareness, and faceoff abilities, but his role is sligtly redundant with McClement in the fold.

There is footage going on for anyone wondering. So far just a pre-practise skate-around.

Kadri and Frattin will have ample opportunity to prove they deserve the spot.

In a 48 game schedule there is going to be a rotation of players in and out of the line-up (according to a couple NHL coaches) so everyone is going to get the chance to shine.

If Kadri can show more than Connolly he'll be in the line-up.

Simple stuff, you use your best players.

RC rolling with JVR-Kadri-Komarov. I would love that as a 3rd line, although I'd prefer Frattin with Komarov on the 4th, but this is still nice.
