Clifton and Zboril are the perfect sort of younger, retool-y players that the Caps could use in their bottom pairs. Again, they must have gotten a better dump price for Smith from the Caps than what the Jackets were demanding.
Zboril is pretty much a quad A type player with little value. Clifton is the only player who really has any value going forward.

I'm sure they're going to do their best to sign him or flip him. But he's still really the only player with value. Zboril is a throw in and Smith is on his way out of the NHL at this pace.
Yeah but in my mind Orlov should be worth at least a 3rd. Maybe a 2nd round pick. Dare I say Hathaway should be the same.

So how did two 2nd-3rd round pick values get traded for essentially nothing?

Ok, so scratch that comment about Clifton and Zboril. Picks will likely be 1st + 3rd or something like that.
That makes way more sense

Minnesota Wild General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired a fifth-round selection in the 2023 NHL Draft in a three-team trade with the Washington Capitals and the Boston Bruins. The Wild acquired defenseman Dmitry Orlov from Washington in exchange for forward Andrei Svetlakov. Washington retained half of Orlov's salary. Minnesota then traded Orlov to Boston in exchange for a fifth-round selection in the 2023 NHL Draft. Minnesota retained 25% of Orlov's remaining salary.

Minnesota has also reassigned forward Adam Beckman to the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Minnesota now has seven picks in the 2023 NHL Draft.

The modest cost of salary retention devalues cap space accrual. There’s not much of an incentive not to go to the cap entering the season.
With the significant exception of a situation where you want to acquire a multi-year contract at the deadline, in which case cap space accrual is still valuable. If your idea of trade deadlines are just rentals, however, then I fully agree with you.

So looking at things right now, Rangers can only afford Kane if it's a money-in/money-out situation with Kane at 75% retention. They are JUST under the amount of needed space to fit him in by about 100K thankfully even if Kravtsov and Lespellcheck are moved out. I don't think the few days between now and the deadline would open enough space.

Toronto could take him at 50% just by moving Accari, but do they want him?

Knowing how the Rangers are frivolous about their draft picks, they can find a 6th or 7th rounder to give to another team to make it 87.5% retained LMAO!
