cap dumps in a year we are contending instead of an add?

I'm not sure if that would be infuriating or troll level winning. I guess it depends on the result.
Not sure I’m into it either unless they plan on flipping the pick

Mighty fine time it would be to make a big roster addition today. One day of practice before a back-to-back at home. Few more days of practice before the desert trip which marks the trade deadline.

Sounds like he's still holding out hope for the Rangers. Canes and Stars have interest.

Based on conversations I've had with sources around the league, the behind-the-scenes talks with the Rangers were more advanced than have been reported. There was a path for Kane going to New York, his preferred destination should he leave Chicago, and then suddenly it felt as if it was taken away -- which is why you saw him react so vulnerably to the Vladimir Tarasenko trade.

If you can’t use the cap space to improve the team you might as well use it to garner some assets for the future. It would be a bit disappointing to see us not add someone significant but I’m a fan of the way management uses all of our cap space.

The reason Craig Smith is being rumored to Carolina (potentially) is because Columbus is allegedly asking for an exorbitant price to take on a cap dump in the Gavrikov deal (2nd rounder?). Heck, an extra 3rd or 4th is still a nice piece to suck up.
Then LET BOSTON PAY IT...make them suffer to improve. We shouldn't be helping them improve for the playoffs for a mere 3rd/4th. We shouldn't be lowering their price to get Gavrikov. Let them flounder until someone else poaches Gavrikov

EDIT: Also, if NJD won't include a Mercer/Nemec-level guy, I think we're definitely in the running as Holtz, while a young #7 overall, has not been developing as well as everyone hoped...there's a reason they keep including him in proposals. Kinda like Drury for us, but while Drury could carve out a nice bottom 6 role, Holtz is an offensive-minded sniper-winger, he's probably a guy who needs to be top-6 or bust.

That would just be a Cap play. Boston will pay some team to take Smith so they can add Gavrikov. Carolina would get a 3rd round pick or so for their trouble.

It would be an interesting power move by Carolina to facilitate a Cap dump for Boston to get better.

LOL, "power move", yeah maybe if the borg wants to power-bottom for Boston.

Makes me think Jarvis will be the demand from Carolina, because Morrow and Nikishin are more on the level of Holtz than Mercer.
Of course that's the ask, but I'm doubting they'll get that...contending teams don't trade away heavily-contributing ELC players. I think Nikishin/Morrow are probably higher than Holtz given D is much more valuable position than a fairly one-dimensional winger

Not necessarily. Maybe SJ values our guys differently than the prospect rating people

Yeah, the Sharks defensive prospects pool is very shallow, so there may be a preference for a defender as the main prospect back, or a higherquality forward.

What may be a larger advantage for Carolina in the Meier talks than any of the prospects is that they're the only contending team that seems willing or able to take on the $10M QO. If Meier wants to test UFA in 2024, Carolina is the best spot for him. I will also say that if the Canes acquire him without an extension, I would expect the package to be much smaller than expected.

On the cap facilitator for a pick: I'm ok with that at 2:45 on deadline day. If Boston finds a taker for a 3rd today, let that team have the pick and save the space in case a bottom pairing D comes available late on deadline day.

If no deals materialize and someone comes offering a 3rd or 4th round pick for $1M in cap space and there's space for it near the deadline? Sure, then I do it.

Carolina isn't paying that $10M qualifying offer, it's quite irrelevant here. He's a UFA unless a mutual agreement is reached.

“Need”, no, but I think he’d be an upgrade over Martinook on the Staal line, plus he’s got a better track record of playing C than Martinook does, so he seems like the type of versatile add that could really make a difference.

I also like the fact that he’d potentially bust Martinook down to the 4th line to add some extra grit there to make room for Jarvis and Stastny.

Like you point out, the asking price is high. I just think he’d be the type of player that would fit well under RBA and adds depth across all forward positions as he can play either wing or C and also up and down the lineup.

It’s more important, I think, for them to make a bonafide scorer their main add, but I also think Barbashev would be a sneaky good add as well.

In other news:

Scratch Johansen from the list:

Solidifies Nashville as sellers. Also takes Johansen off market who I didn't want

win/win.

Now trade for Duchesne and he will only be a few hours from Carrie and still happy and win many gaem.
