That's an absurd question on par with "Would you give me 12% of your paycheck for the next 3 years in exchange for a <15% chance to win a Ferrari?"
i thought we were chevy trucks. Would we want a Ferrari? We dont like the sabres.

I think our chances on Timo are less than 50% and the Devils are favorites. I think if we can bring in Patrick Kane at a lower cost, jilted by the Rangers and perhaps Devils, we might have some motivated parties. I think Kane believes he's playing for his legacy and would like to go somewhere realistic to compete. I think at this point you worry less about positional fit and more about game changing ability. Kevin Hayes is not that guy. Adam Henrique is not that guy.
pass on paying rental Kane price. He needs hip surgery, his 5v5 numbers due to effort are awful. He is a name at this point.

I don’t want Kane but I agree we’re in 2nd place right now to NJ for Meier. I think we’d be wise to pay the price necessary to get him. Or at least to drive the price high enough that it really, really hurts NJ. They’ll be our competition for quite awhile in this division, that’s not a move that just affects this playoff run but probably one that shapes the environment of the Metro for several seasons.

Kane appears to be damaged goods right now.

“It’s not like the happiest I’ve been to hear about a trade,” admitted Kane after practice Friday afternoon. “I think the Rangers are a team that you definitely pay attention to and definitely are intrigued by, for obvious reasons.”

“If things were going to happen, that was a team I was definitely looking at,” Kane continued. “It seems like they kind of filled their void and went ahead and made a deal, so it is what it is.”

I agree 100%. If we lose out on Meier, drive the cost up for New Jersey to the point it hurts them; like trading away Nemec or maybe something a little less extreme.

On whether we're 2nd or not for Meier, I'm honestly not sure. New Jersey already made an offer, and clearly it wasn't that impressive to San Jose. Of course, yes, SJ is also hoping the price goes up, but there's the risk of them waiting too long due to other trades, and thus they wouldn't get a bidding war, etc. NJ can improve their trade package, but to what extent without trading away Nemec? If it's anything below Nemec, and we're willing to trade Morrow/Nikishin (which we should be), we have a real shot at getting Meier IMO.

Might as well trade Nikishin. More people that never leave Europe, like Bokk.

Bokk did leave Europe. He just wasn't very good in North America.

No European kid grows up dreaming of being the best B-tier or C-tier hockey player in history. If Russia had the money and influence to sway that paradigm then Ovechkin would be playing in the KHL right now. Every Panarin and Kaprizov always ends up coming over. Nikishin will be no different as he maintains his Superstar status.

Do the Devils bring Meier in and sign him for more $$$ than Hughes? I'm nervous that the Canes miss out on Meier and he goes to the Devils. Really only nervous because their group continues to get better and although we're good, they'll have that dynamic offense to help push them over the top for years to come. I think the Canes group have to see Meier as that game breaking FWD that they've missed out on and I think you add Jarvis if that's what it takes. Maybe we get curveballed and Grier sends Meier to his old team in Buffalo for one of their Goalie prospects. I'd be more happy with that because they're not in our division.

While he is older, he's still RFA.
A very special case of RFA with his machinated 10M QO and a year left to UFA status. He should really be considered an UFA for the contract negotiation purposes at this point, as he will get either 1x10M, an UFA-like extension or he walks free as UFA this summer if not QO'ed.

Any team interested of getting Meier has long since called his agent for no particular reason, just to say hi.
Exactly. We already got a peek into this with the Horvat leak. Nailed the trade and exact extension $$.

Or Don would call the agent Claude Lemieux about his client Dominik Bokk and ask what kind of UFA contract Dominik might sign if he was now signed onto a bridge contract with 10M QO at the end.
Hypothetical Bokk with a $10M QO is currently not on our team. Would he be willing to come over to Carolina for $9 million x 8 years if he reaches that threshold?

Would be very cool to see an elite player bounce around the league betting on themselves and maximizing 1 year contracts

I saw Seravalli's recent trade board (posted yesterday) where he rates the best players available for a trade. I was surprised to see Crouse rated so low, and I was especially surprised he was rated below several particular guys. It made me think, Crouse really has to be a more under the radar move, and thus sounds like a stereotypical Canes move (I think @TheRillestPaulFenton said as much weeks ago iirc), and especially considering Crouse is only 25, and has a good contract for 4 more years. One thing Seravalli didn't mention that's important about Crouse stat wise, he currently has 109 hits. That on top of being on track for a 20 goal season two years in a row (despite being on a bottom feeder team), and his size, is quite appealing. We'd make our top 6 bigger (he's 6'4 and 215 pounds on NHL.com, but Seravalli says 220), and more physical, while also adding a player that's an annual 20+ goal scorer.

Here's what Seravalli said about Crouse:

17. Lawson Crouse
🆕
Left Wing, Arizona Coyotes
Age: 25
Stats: 46 GP, 16 G, 12 A, 28 Pts
Contract: 4 more seasons, $4.3 million AAV
Scoop: Crouse is a bit of a surprising name, given that he just inked a five-year extension in Arizona in August. Sources say Crouse has popped up in conversations – either internally or externally – as a fit. He’s grown into his 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame nicely and has already put up 16 goals this season. That pace, coupled with his cost certainty on the contract, might provide the kind of surplus value that teams were drooling over initially with guys like Chychrun and Brandon Hagel last year. The question is Crouse has never really played in the spotlight in a big market and he has little by way of playoff experience. Arizona is likely content on keeping him, but GM Bill Armstrong probably isn’t in the business of slamming the phone down on most roster players right now.

Trade Targets: Who steps up to tempt Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane?

If we fail to get Meier, I actually find Crouse to be an exciting alternative for a winger. Crouse is more exciting right now to me than the centermen available even if our 2C is our biggest weakness.

So, for me at least, Meier>>>>>Crouse>>>Henrique>>ROR is probably my ratings. Two wingers, and two centers. I do wonder if Arizona would do some retention on Crouse, because as great as his contract is, we're still a cap team with important contracts expiring in the summer of 2024.

I think getting Crouse AND Henrique (who isn't even on Seravalli's top 40 trade board lol) would be great if we have enough assets we're willing to spend. Then, at some point, we replace Henrique with a better centerman; I'm guessing next deadline or next summer (probably not this summer).
