Don Waddell basically said in the interview they are looking for a depth defenceman and a forward who will have impact. VIDEO: Waddell Media Availability

Per @Boom Boom Apathy :

im·pact
noun
/ˈimˌpak(t)/
the action of one object coming forcibly into contact with another.
"there was the sound of a third impact"
Similar:
collision
crash
smash
clash
bump
bang
knock
jolt
thump
whack
thwack
slam
smack
contact
verb
/imˈpak(t),ˈimˌpak(t)/
1.
come into forcible contact with another object.
"the shell impacted twenty yards away"
Similar:
crash into
smash into
collide with
be in collision with
hit
strike
ram
smack into
slam into
bang into
cannon into
plow into
meet head-on
dash against
2.
have a strong effect on someone or something.
"high interest rates have impacted on retail spending"

So someone with impact could be a heavy hitter...ala Jakob Trenin
Someone who has a strong effect on us....ala Chad Larose unretiring or maybe someone with just really sexy thighs
or someone who falls down a lot...the next bambi on skates.

Now we need to figure out if they meant high impact, low impact, or sudden impact.

You're saying something that would warrant me responding "How is an overpriced 4th liner on an 8 year contract even close to a core piece that can't be moved for a 1st line player?"????????

If I'm reading you correctly, you're absolutely not saying he's a core piece you wouldn't move for Meier, so I would never respond with "How is an overpriced 4th liner on an 8 year contract even close to a core piece that can't be moved for a 1st line player?"

Slow down and read. Lol. I know you don't like KK. I'd rather trade futures and keep him, but if he was the price I'd consider it depending on what needed to be added. Neither of us are saying he's a core piece that can't be moved for a 1st line player.

I'm reading those first two paragraphs and all that is coming to mind is....

The fact that the Canes only acquired Domi last year was simply a matter of them having no cap space. The current situation is frankly radically different because of how much cap that they can swallow. I'm not worried about Carolina making a move or not in March. They certainly will; the only question is what will it be.

Good sir why do they need to "swallow" the cap space? There are Freudian vibes about this here post.

I see the love for Saros but I wouldn’t pay that price.

We have no idea how Saros will perform going from making the 9th most 5v5 saves per game to making the lowest or 4th lowest 5v5 saves.

Some dudes struggle when seeing that few of chances

Anyone have easy access to his HDSAA/HDSV and GSAA?

Communications around Canes acquisitions are so tight that these guys just guess so hard.
yeah did anyone predict any of our deadline moves the last several years? Skjei, Vatanen made since due to our D injuries that year but never saw reported interest until the moves were made. Tro completely out of left field. Nino not a deadline move but I don't think anyone saw that coming. Domi no. Hakanpaa, maybe?

An aggregator account is reporting that Friedman mentioned “something, something…Miller, Hurricanes…”:

The rumors outta VAN never cease. Seems like this one may even be tied to last summer and the Canes chasing Tkachuk. Either way, the few months free of the Miller to CAR proposals were nice, weren’t they?

It's hard to see how this makes sense, because Friedman talked about a 3-way trade that involved Tkachuk and Miller.

I can see how that might end up with Tkachuk in Carolina and Miller in Calgary; I don't see how that would have ended up with Miller in Carolina and Tkachuk in Vancouver. And without that, Miller to Carolina now doesn't make any sense.

No matter how good of a fit Meier might be, and no matter how many prospects and picks we might be willing to stack, it's always possible San Jose's GM and scouts just don't like what we have to offer. There may be guys on other teams they are more fixated on. Even with guys like Koko and Jarvis that are more established that folks think they'd easily accept, well, they may have the same concerns that many around here have about those two. Pinning all your hopes to a given move is just asking to be disappointed.

We're always going to hear that the Canes are tied to the big ticket trade/UFA targets because:

1. Don Waddell is good at his job and always at least checks and listens to the price.
2. The Canes are among the best at locking down leaks.

After surprising trades, we always hear from random GMs that "we didn't even know this guy was available, or we would have been interested in making this trade." Good GMs are constantly kicking the tires and managing the market, bad GMs are team-focused and don't understand the market.

Maybe this changes things for the Devils on Meier, get some backup whiles Hughes is out or plan on blowing your wad next season:

This franchise is on a run of success we've never seen. Not many franchises have won some sort of postseason series each of the past four seasons like the Canes have. We are currently fairly high in making the playoffs streak and a few teams that aren't us will probably fall off that list this season.

Anyone has the right to question if the correct moves were made to get a team over the top. But just be careful what you wish for if you start asking for changes with this highly successful front office in the context of the league right now and this franchise's history. Cause there isn't much out there that's doing it better, and you're not likely getting the ones that are to run this team.

All that said, I have wished they'd be more aggressive at times too, but I can generally understand when they aren't and I do kinda get it in the context of some of their philosophies and what have made them successful.

For the record, I'm not saying that we can't trust the front office to put a competitive team together. I'm saying that if they fail to make a big move this year to push us over the top given the situation we have ($10m+ in cap space, a boatload of prospects who are unlikely to make this roster but would elsewhere, a full chamber of draft picks) then the pressure has to be on to win in the playoffs this year. Because if they don't make the move, they're gambling that what we have is good enough to push us to the top right now, and if that fails, its going to beg the question of if they know how to take a competitive team and turn it into a champion.

The team not making a big move would only be a failure on the surface. We have no idea how teams value our players or picks. We might think we are giving up more value than what the other team accepted because they valued the other prospects more than ours. Too many dynamics of moves to claim its a failure. We have one less hurdle than most, cap, but there quite a few others to overcome to make a deal happen.
