Well if we make that deal the whole concept of “we didn’t need to clear cap space” seems to be false. As does the whole Hoglander concept. We’ve been trying to talk anyone into taking him at all for months, and are running into the same issue every team trying to clear cap is facing.

We’ll see what the actual price is. Feels like this is happening soon.

Yeah.... with the ltir pool increased and one less roster player counting toward the 23 man max, bets are we now have a press release saying Drury recalled and he will be swapping in and out of lineup with noesen and Stepan and Marty now...

So I've been thinking that we really need to move TT to the right side and get the Aho line clicking on 5v5 (this is where everybody says "D'uh). The obvious (maybe) problem is that all three of Aho, TT, and Jarvis are a bit on the small side and are getting manhandled. None of them are suited to the digging the pucks out of the corner and net-front roles. So to fix that line we need someone with some size and some skill, but also this player needs to be cheap and probably a left wing/shot as well.

I don't really see a guy in our own system that is ready for that role, and I don't really want to bring Martinook up to the first line on a permanent basis for the season as I don't think he will work there long term and I don't want to change Staal's line either. So I am looking for a trade for a low cost guy that meets those needs to take Kase's roster spot (assuming he is cooked).

My thinking is Evgeny Svechnikov. He is big (6'3, 208lbs), he's cheap ($750k, 1 year, RFA), and likely not too expensive to acquire as he was a late unsigned RFA signing. From his stats, he looks like he contributes offensively at a similar rate as Martinook in his last couple of stops, given his 4th line usage. I think he could increase that given his pedigree/skill level at the draft if he were paired with Aho and TT on their line, whereas I don't think I would expect Martinook to increase his scoring acumen.

If this were to happen, I think I would go with lines like these until Patches is up to speed:

ESvech - Aho - TT
ASvech - KK - Necas
Martinook - Staal - Jarvis
Stazny - Stephan - Fast

What do you all thing? I know the "we don't need a Band of Brothers" again will be a consideration, but in this case we already have the high skill brother signed very long term, so I don't think it would be a problem if we then didn't retain his brother after the year was up. I also think Andrei might explode with production at the opportunity to play with his brother over a cup run. Evgeny has some upside to his game still and is at least worth a flyer in this situation.

I'm all for it from a storyline perspective, why not. I don't think it meaningfully helps us, but I wouldn't say no because having brothers is cool. I do wonder to what extend Ondrej Kase still factors into our plans. I don't know that the 1st line you have up there looks all that much different with ESvech or with Noesen. If you're looking for someone to go with Aho and TT that drives the net, and the current plan you have up there has us bringing in a journeyman because he "goes to the net"... well, we already have one of those and he's been doing pretty darn well to be honest.

I think that we'll see Patches soon enough, see how he changes the dynamic, and still have plenty of time to adjust at the trade deadline. On paper, he's the solution to this, and I don't think a move needs to occur sooner simply to remain in the playoff picture, which would be the biggest worry in the meantime.

This is a great way to put it. A lot of the posts lamenting our offseason lump in letting Nino walk. We upgraded on Nino. That upgrade unfortunately tore his Achilles like a week after we traded for him. That’s not a front office issue, those are just the breaks. We then went out and took advantage of that LTIR space to go get Stastny too, a guy we probably wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. So if things feel a little thin at forward… they are. We’ve got a 30 goal scorer on LTIR right now.

Random thoughts:

If the Canucks aren't anywhere near playoff position near the trade deadline, Kuzmenko could be a great rental for some team and I would expect the Canes to be in on it. We could pretty much run 3 great scoring lines with him and Patches added and would easily be the deepest forward group in the league.

PP2 QB is still a weakness, Pesce ain't it, as a few mentioned in the game thread tonight. If Ducks stay bad I see Klingberg being available as a rental probably with retention. He has not been great but on a better team as a bottom pair guy and PP2 specialist as he would be here, he could be a great addition. We've obviously already shown interest a few times, and Chatfield and Coghlan haven't exactly locked down that 3RD spot...

Some of you cap geniuses tell me how they'd fit in our cap. But on paper man this team would be ridiculous:

Patches - Aho - Turbo
Svech - Necas - Jarvis
Kuzmenko - Kotkaniemi - Kase/Noesen
Martinook/Stastny - Staal - Fast

Slavin - Burns
Skjei - Pesce
CDH - Klingberg

Unfortunately so far he's been pretty useless and has made little impact

Useless? I don't agree. He's been a decent offensive piece for a 4th line that also has has very solid defensive metrics. Rod clearly trusts that Noesen-Stastny-Stepan line, because he was short-shifting a bunch in the 3rd period and both of the bottom two lines received near-equal ice time. I think that whenever Kase comes back, you'll see more actual offensive numbers from the 4th lines.

Kulikov from Anaheim and Meier from SJ are my two deadline targets. We become a very solid team top to bottom with those two. Meier is a definite extension candidate and I would give Kulikov a 2 year deal. We’ll need another 3LD next year and he could mentor Nishikin his first year in the league.

Goalies might be shaky but the names available will be few and fairly expensive.

Too many ups and down so far to tell what we have. I’ve never thought KK was a good solution in Trocheck’s spot but even I can’t say that he’s been given enough time. Stastny is being used differently than he’s ever been used, Kase lasted like five minutes. This could end up looking like a disaster off season but we have to wait to Xmas time before we know what we really have.

We’re still clearly a good team overall. The goaltending just needs to be top notch in the playoffs. As long as we make it there I can’t complain too hard. I’d only be keeping an eye out for a 2C or let Necas try, and I’d be looking for a good third pair guy as a rental.

We're dollar in dollar out for trades with the LTIR situation right? Kase and Stastny together make 3 million, if we want anyone more expensive than that we're gonna lose someone important from the roster. Plus the cost of dumping those two contracts. Correct me if I'm wrong.

We have 1.6 million now. I don’t think Stastny will cost anything to dump. We may not get anything much in return.

Knowing if Kase will ever come back is important to our trade deadline.

If Kase doesn't come back, he can be added to the LTIR to get back that $1.5M even after Pacioretty comes back.

This was probably a consideration when taking the risk of signing Kase: if they are already utilizing LTIR with Gardiner, adding to it with Kase isn't as bad a worst-case scenario if he does end up out long-term due to concussions.

Good point....it's really hard to see Kase coming back (damn autocorrect, site or Apple...it keeps on trying to substitute Kate despite adjusting it 5x) given his previous concussion history and the fact he is not even skating yet. It's a shame we don't anyone with size/speed on Wolves roster who is ready and Drury seems to have not played well yet this season.

Change in the wind?

Speaking of..will our game be postponed due to the tropical storm headed to FL?

Storm track a little more north than before but they are still suggesting Broward County will have bad conditions and 47% chance of tropical winds (most of wind field is north too).

the 4 o'clock update will probably tell more. If the storm veers south even though the hockey stadium is somewhat inland but I'd be surprised if many people show up.

btw: track will impact NC too.....
