Nine games in the first 16 days of the season is virtually unheard of. Usually, early-season games are so spaced out it drives me crazy.

I'm still a little confused about the Rick Dudley situation, but I might be missing something. in Don Waddell's post-draft media availability, he was asked about Dudley's impact on the draft and he was pretty clear that Dudley works on the pro side mainly, with a bit of help to amateur stuff. the amateur stuff is under MacDonald (and now Darren Yorke)'s umbrella.

I guess I either forgot what Dudley was brought in to do, or something has changed since he arrived. given all his experience working drafts in his career, I wonder if they didn't tell him to turn his spotlight on young RFA types, maybe players shuffling between NHL/AHL, that sort of thing. it would seem to be a useful application of his experience, and it might also help show that something may have been uniquely appealing about Forsling and Forsberg in the de Haan deal.

edit before posting: I just punched up some of the news reports from when he was hired, and it seems that he was just brought in to be more than anything else a resource, and literally didn't know what his specific focus was going to be when he was hired. so I guess I was working off assumptions based on his work with Montreal and the Thrashers back in the day. still, interesting that someone like him with all his experience, would be allowed to have a more fluid impact rather than a specific role. supporting the GM borg model, I would think.

I would think from a volume/recovery perspective a stacked early schedule followed by a more relaxed February/March/April is ideal.

EDIT: except as halle pointed out I guess March is a slog. Wonder where they’re making up the rest?

We have 13 B2Bs compared to 17 last season (if I counted correctly) The more stacked early schedule might have helped in that endeavor.

Home Games by day of the week
Monday - 1 (7pm)
Tuesday - 7 (all at 7pm)
Wednesday - 0
Thursday - 6 (all at 7pm)
Friday - 11 (all at 7:30)
Saturday - 11 (9 at 7pm, 2 at 1pm)
Sunday - 5 (1 at 2pm, 1 at 4pm, 3 at 5pm)

Very interesting. Pretty much loaded up to maximize capacity on any given night. 27 home games during the weekend window (Friday night through Sunday evening), and of the remaining, most are against teams with fanbases which should draw a crowd and pack it in.

Edit: I miscounted. Its actually 11 Friday home games and 27 through the weekend window

Everyone is going to be qualified according to Waddell. Kind of surprising.

I assume Pots, McKegg, and Brown wont be re-signed until they find out if they can find an NHL job somewhere first.

Zero Wednesday games.

How long did it take them to figure out that Wednesday is a church night in this market? Only twenty years!

Press conference wrap up

Talked to Faulk’s rep. Have a difference in value. Want to win this year so they will play it out
No decision on Darling. exploring all options (i assume this will go up until the deadline)
Talk to Mrazek daily. McE not as frequent but still talk
Can and will match any offer sheet to Aho. Offer sheets are blown out of proportion
Everyone will be qualified
Brown, Pots, and McKegg are welcome back but their agents want to explore other options ( I assume a NHL starting job)
Forslund and Tripp are all but signed
Decision on Mike V will come by the end of the week. We want him back
CdH moves allow young guys a chance to make a roster. Fleury and Bean’s development played a part.

Edit* The big rig had other light on Faulk: the talks were better than expected.
So clarified saying the sarling thing will go 3-4 more days before a decision happened.

Surprised to not get any news on Marleau. Although, anything other than a buyout would be rather shocking. LeBrun's latest in the Athletic basically says the buyout is had already been decided upon.

And one other thing that gets me...outside of Faulk, who the heck else are they going to trade for help up front? I guess they could deal one of the young D in Fleury/Bean/now Forsling or from their prospects and/or picks, but they'd all need a significant plus for anyone of note. There's not really that many UFAs that realistically come to CAR as well. The only ones that come to mind on that I'd think they'd have a shot at are Dzingel, Nyquist or bleh...Brassard. You've got to think Faulk is still being dangled...

Sometimes, I can't even...

that Aho thread on the main trade board is something else. Now we got people in there saying that it must be true, because Ek and Kyp didn't specifically say they copped a 7 month old rumor to draw up clicks over the weekend

Its so sad its actually enjoyable to follow.

Not really. Faulk's not bringing back the forward you're looking for a year away from unrestricted free agency.

There's likely no player for player trade coming. It's futures deal or free agency.

Noteworthy:

With the addition of Forsberg, the Checkers will probably be losing Dustin Tokarski as a UFA. He was 12-0-0-1 with some crazy save% in the .945 range including regular season and playoffs.

Apparently our goalie depth will look like this:

NHL
[#1 goalie TBD]
Ned or Forsberg

AHL
Ned or Forsberg
Callum Booth

ECHL
Jeremy Helvig
Likely a pro contract signing (e.g., Jeremy Smith) or Eetu Makiniemi

Others
Pyotr Kochetkov - Assuming he will play in the KHL for a couple of years rather than jump to NA right away. Probably available to our org sometime around 2021.
Jack LaFontaine - Finishing college, available fall 2020
Eetu Makiniemi - In the Jokerit system, will probably look to advance there before coming to NA. Probably available fall 2020.
Jake Kucharski - Looks like he had a rough year in the USHL. Assuming he goes back to that level, maybe available fall 2020 or beyond.
Cedrick Andree, Sam Harvey, Anthony Popovich - Camp invitees who could possibly be picked up as FAs.

I'm not sure if Faulk is going to bring back anything worthwhile up front. He probably would have been traded already if that was going to happen. I'm still not sold on the Canes actively looking for forwards either. I think they sit back and watch how trades and free agency shake out and if something makes sense to them cost/asset wise, then they might pounce. But as long as Aho is unsigned and we're paying Darling 4 million dollars to do literally nothing, there's a lot of uncertainty about the budget, both for the short and long term. Probably no major moves happening until that gets sorted out.
