Backing up the brinks truck for estaalo failed because literaly an entire Generation of projects busted. Thanks 05-09 drafts!
Don't forget Blanchard and Dodge.Zac Dalpe and Drayson Bowman hype was the best hype.
OK, the salaries are rising. This is clearly a fact. But there are limits to what they can ask. Hockey is a team sport and not a single player sport like tennis for example. Even Lemieux and Gretzky had great teams behind them. There does not exist a player who can win cups alone. So if you are a manager you know this and you should try to build the best possible team and not pay a player ridiculous sums. That being said Aho is a great player, this year a superstar player. But more than 9 millions a year long term would not be right. It's just an opinionA couple of comments:
1) I understand you are saying "IF" as in hypothetical.
2) I don't think we can think this is going to lead to a big mess just because he's not signed yet. Virtually no key RFA's have signed yet. None of Marner, Laine, Rantanen, Aho, Point, Trouba, Karlsson, Werenski, Connor, Tkachuk, Boeser, Provorov, Koneckny, etc... have signed.
3) What Aho gets is going to depend a lot on what the other RFA's get. If that's where the salaries are going, then so be it, that's what it takes. If the Canes aren't willing to pay market value for the best player they've had in a long time, then we might as well fold up.
I think once one or two of these guys sign and set the comps, most of the rest will fall in line.

As far as Aho signing a “market” deal didn’t Donny just say today that we aren’t the league and that our budget is different
He did, but for star players, that’s a tough sell. Look, I hope Aho signs a team friendly deal, but I won’t be surprised, nor upset if he signs a market deal as well. Dundon basically adopted the kid.
I can't imagine he would. I mean after some of the other guys on the team took Canes friendly deals, it almost feels like there is a mindset that everyone on this team is willing to leave something on the table to pay it forward to the next guy.Unless Aho wants something absurd like highest player in the game, we must pay him, or go back to wallowing in mediocrity or worse. We stockpiled all these prospects and picks for a reason, and supplementing one of the best players to put on this uniform is one of the reasons.
Are you more worried about the center or wings going into next year? I originally thought center, but I'm starting to think it's the wings.
Depth wise I'm more worried about center, but talent wise if we can add a top 6 player it's a wing (shy of it being Duchene) if that makes any sense. Are you more worried about the center or wings going into next year? I originally thought center, but I'm starting to think it's the wings.
Easy, center. Necas will add plenty of skill on the wing. A ton of wingers available to band-aid if need be.Are you more worried about the center or wings going into next year? I originally thought center, but I'm starting to think it's the wings.
He's good buddies with Teuvo who signed a downright silly contract.I can't imagine he would. I think we need a center that is more offensively gifted that Staal, to push him down to being an elite 3rd line, checking center. With Staal in the top six (offensively), I think that limits the offense of our team. Necas might be that guy, though I don't think he's played enough center in the AHL to be sure of that. Ideally, I'd love for them to bring in a UFA like Duchene, but I doubt the guy that writes the checks would go for that at this point. Maybe a cap casualty like Huala, Karlsson, Kadri or Nylander would work. Are you more worried about the center or wings going into next year? If Skinner got $9m, Aho is worth more. But, the situations are different, Aho is a RFA, and there is a bit of a precedent here to lowball yourself in order to compete.I still don't think 8.5-9 for 6-7 is off the table because of this. Can't say that I would blame him, or that he'd be out of line, asking for 10+ though.
I see Necas doing the Aho introduction into the league. Natural center that plays wing the first year or two before being thrown to the wolves at Center. Always leave room to shift him to Center earlier if his play earns it. Short term, we might have a couple question marks there, but long term, we should be more than set.I think we need a center that is more offensively gifted that Staal, to push him down to being an elite 3rd line, checking center. I guess you are assuming Williams retires? If we can get Zucker.
Nino - Aho - TT
Zucker - Staal - Svechnikov
Martinook - Wallmark - Necas
McGinn - Bishop - Brown
