A couple of comments:
1) I understand you are saying "IF" as in hypothetical.
2) I don't think we can think this is going to lead to a big mess just because he's not signed yet. Virtually no key RFA's have signed yet. None of Marner, Laine, Rantanen, Aho, Point, Trouba, Karlsson, Werenski, Connor, Tkachuk, Boeser, Provorov, Koneckny, etc... have signed.
3) What Aho gets is going to depend a lot on what the other RFA's get. If that's where the salaries are going, then so be it, that's what it takes. If the Canes aren't willing to pay market value for the best player they've had in a long time, then we might as well fold up.

I think once one or two of these guys sign and set the comps, most of the rest will fall in line.
OK, the salaries are rising. This is clearly a fact. But there are limits to what they can ask. Hockey is a team sport and not a single player sport like tennis for example. Even Lemieux and Gretzky had great teams behind them. There does not exist a player who can win cups alone. So if you are a manager you know this and you should try to build the best possible team and not pay a player ridiculous sums. That being said Aho is a great player, this year a superstar player. But more than 9 millions a year long term would not be right. It's just an opinion

I get all that, but the market is the market so what you and I think is fair doesn’t matter. If Point and Rantanen both make $9m, should Aho only ask for $8 because of the market he plays in?

In every major sports league in the US (world?), the stars get paid what we normal people think are ridiculous sums. No different here.

As far as Aho signing a “market” deal didn’t Donny just say today that we aren’t the league and that our budget is different

He did, but for star players, that’s a tough sell. Look, I hope Aho signs a team friendly deal, but I won’t be surprised, nor upset if he signs a market deal as well. Dundon basically adopted the kid.

I mean everything Waddell said in that was just negotiation tactics. Obviously you are going to sell your position that we need to keep salaries low because small market and blah blah blah but there is no way they are letting Aho walk over money after a long playoff run culminating in $5m in new season ticket purchases. That's a real good way to evaporate all momentum in it's tracks. Aho will get paid, it's just about how low a salary we can convince him to take.

I feel gross after watching the cup final.

Can we hurry up to the draft already?

Looking to next year, Aho seems like the most important piece of Carolina's off season. I think Ferland and Williams are gone, which means you really need to look for three forwards at least from the Checkers, trade or free agency.

I'd like to see Bean get a shot and one of the d men moved for a forward.

Unless Aho wants something absurd like highest player in the game, we must pay him, or go back to wallowing in mediocrity or worse. We stockpiled all these prospects and picks for a reason, and supplementing one of the best players to put on this uniform is one of the reasons.
I can't imagine he would. I mean after some of the other guys on the team took Canes friendly deals, it almost feels like there is a mindset that everyone on this team is willing to leave something on the table to pay it forward to the next guy.

How come people think Williams is going to retire? I know that wall comes quickly for older players but he had a pretty decent season on-ice all things considered. Off-ice he’s a huge part of what they’re building. I wouldn’t be surprised if he signs one year deals much like Wesley. He’s gotta be thinking about one more Cup, especially as a captain.

He's good buddies with Teuvo who signed a downright silly contract.

Are you more worried about the center or wings going into next year? I originally thought center, but I'm starting to think it's the wings.
I think we need a center that is more offensively gifted that Staal, to push him down to being an elite 3rd line, checking center. With Staal in the top six (offensively), I think that limits the offense of our team. Necas might be that guy, though I don't think he's played enough center in the AHL to be sure of that. Ideally, I'd love for them to bring in a UFA like Duchene, but I doubt the guy that writes the checks would go for that at this point. Maybe a cap casualty like Huala, Karlsson, Kadri or Nylander would work.

contractually, aho has some claims to being compensated at nearly a marner level and it wouldn't shock me if that was part of the hold up. the difference between marner's most frequent linemates and aho's most frequent linemates certainly could account for a 10 point difference in production. aho scored more goals in his first 3 years 83 to 67. points are 224 to 198 in favor of marner. it's close, guys. if marner is going to get offered 12.5 million, i wouldn't expect aho to take less than 11.

I still don't think 8.5-9 for 6-7 is off the table because of this. Can't say that I would blame him, or that he'd be out of line, asking for 10+ though.
If Skinner got $9m, Aho is worth more. But, the situations are different, Aho is a RFA, and there is a bit of a precedent here to lowball yourself in order to compete.

Yeah, TT signed a downright silly contract, but the ones that Slavin and Pesce signed earlier are absurd. I don't know what's in the water down here, but people are willing to take less money to stay here, and...

I mean, if we can get Aho on a team friendly deal, that puts pressure on Svech to do the same. And if we can make that work, our Cap situation is going to be incredible. Hell, given the talent we have, its already incredible, but we'll have serious weight to throw around in FA. Especially if we can remain competitive with a low payroll. The second Dundon goes all in to win... phew

I see Necas doing the Aho introduction into the league. Natural center that plays wing the first year or two before being thrown to the wolves at Center. Always leave room to shift him to Center earlier if his play earns it. Short term, we might have a couple question marks there, but long term, we should be more than set.
