What about something crazy like Corey Perry for Scott Darling?

It’s only a 5m add in salary for a RW. I know it’s questionable on his health, but he’s supposed to have his knee fixed now.

Was anyone else expecting Mrazek and/or McE to get signed before Free Agency? Getting just a bit nervous on what I figured was a sure bet. Both testing the market is unlikely to turn out well IMO.

I don't expect McElhinney to be signed at all.
I think Mrazek will be signed and there are still 3 weeks until 7/1.

If he can be a 50pt RW, the price after dumping Darling is only 5m a year (only 2 years left on his deal). That’s not bad value.

Right now, the Canes are at $54M
+ Aho ~$8.5
+ Williams ~$4M
+ Goalies ~$5M
+ McGinn ~$1.5M
+ Perry (-Darling) ~$5M
+ 2 forwards ~ $1.5M
+ #7D ~$800K

Total: $80.3M in Cap, but:
+Teuvo makes $800K more in real money next year
+Nino makes $400K more in real money next year
+ Hamilton makes $250K more in real money next year
+ Slavin makes $200K more in real money next year
+ Faulk makes $1.2M more in real money next year
+ de Hann makes $150K more in real money next year
+ TVR makes $200K more in real money next year
+ With bonuses, Svech could make $2.5M more in real money next year

- Martinook makes $150 less in real money next year
- Perry makes $600K less in real money next year

I just don't see Dundon paying $80.3M in cap, + another $2.5-$5.0M (depending on Svech's bonuses) in real money with Perry as the main add.

Gosh. And here I was worrying if HFDucks would look badly at my way for being on record of having called Corey Perry a "vatful of puke" and "pitiful puddle of human phlegm" because he mauls underaged children. But this is like pure villainy.

If there ever is a chance in my opinion, I'll let you know.

It's a little early, still. There are a few teams counting on Erik Karlsson and other big names in free agency that are going to miss out.

I don’t think it matters. Pesce’s versatility and contract, and Hamilton’s offense are crucial moving forward. Faulk has just that one year of term. That factor pretty much closes the door on any type of hockey trade for a player with any contract length beyond that. Even if Faulk agreed to an extension as part of a hypothetical deal, he’s still returning a package of futures a la Turris, Pacioretty and even Stone to an extent.

From a macro perspective, the window for a notable trade probably closed when Toronto re-signed Nylander. Everything seemingly came into alignment in November. Carolina needed scoring in the worst way at the time and had the depth to move a quality RHD. Toronto needed a cost-effective RHD and had a quality forward holding out at the time. Age and team control were close.

The situation here has changed. Swapping out a 4C for a Top 6 forward accomplished much of what was needed. Pesce’s value to the team grew. The success the team had should provide for some additional rope in being patient for a developed Svechnikov and Necas.

I wonder if Hall leaves NJ, would they be willing to deal Palmieri too?

Seems like a fairly sure bet to score 25+ goals and hit 50 points, as a right shot PP specialist I think he could do wonders for our PP.

Other name that I would want to gamble on is Kyle Turris, who could be had for cheap.

Any truth to the Hamilton as a trade piece speculation? It doesn't really make sense to me

CAR has a bunch of RD. Other teams, especially ones up north, really need quality RD. It’s the job of the talking heads up their to whet their fan’s appetites with rumors of quality players being available for peanuts. Pure, baseless speculation.

In reality, CAR has evidently recently stated they’re quite happy with their D and aren’t looking to trade anyone. If another team offers them fair value, they’d consider moving anyone not named Aho or Slavin.

In other news, water is wet.

CAR has a bunch of RD.
They have 4 right-shot D. The surplus is actually on the left side. Fleury and Bean have played exclusively left-side.

As for Pesce, I understand he is effective on the right and it is his "natural" position. However, the biggest concern with right-shot defenders playing on the left is the ability to keep pucks in along the wall since it requires using backhand stick positioning. I don't recall that happening with Pesce. I do recall his shot improving because it was being taken more toward the middle of the ice. This is more common for European players and does have some validity--the prime example being Ovi on the power-play. Bottom line is that Pesce is a LD and moving him back doesn't make sense given his career year.
Finally it should read "consider moving any player not named Aho, Svechnikov, Pesce, or Slavin."

The other notable, but not surprising things from Chip's article:
  • Waddell said Tuesday that he planned to meet with Sebastian Aho’s agent at the draft next week in Vancouver. Both the team and the center would like to agree on a long-term contract, but at what price? Seven million dollars a year? Eight? Nine? More? “There’s still some real negotiating to be done,” Waddell said.
  • Waddell said no decision had been made by Williams, noting Canes coach Rod Brind’Amour had been talking with his good friend..... and that Williams, if he does play, would stay with the Canes, not move to another team.
  • RE: Mrazek and McElhinney signings: “With both guys, that’s still our goal,” Waddell said Tuesday. “If a deal makes sense, we will get that done but there’s still work to be done.”
  • Waddell stressed that every situation, like every NHL market, is different. “We have made it clear that everyone’s revenue is different around the league,” Waddell said. “Our contracts can’t be based on another team’s economics but on our own economics.”
  • Waddell said the team had held no conversations with Ferland, a part of the Canes’ megatrade with the Calgary Flames last June, indicating Ferland would become a UFA on July 1.
Sounds like they aren't going to make too many signings too soon as they are going to play a bit of hardball due to economics when it comes to salaries. It also sounds like the team (not too unexpectedly) won't be going after any higher priced guys, whether it's via UFA or trade, but that could just be GM speak while trying to negotiate deals to re-sign guys.

Also, as expected, the team has no desire to re-sign Ferland.

The goalie situation is concerning, supplanting a scoring forward as the top priority? But who is out there the Canes have a reasonable chance at landing, and who will put them in position to continue this year's success? The best guys are too expensive or not likely to come to CAR. The others aren't great. Hope they can sign Mrazek, but who else? Lehner? Give Ned a chance?

trevor carrick made a comment on twitter about his time in charlotte being the best five years of his life and "what a way to finish" to make it sound like he is likely moving on this offseason. hopefully that strong playoff he just had will make him some extra money somewhere. he should be someone's 7th defenseman or take his game to europe. he's been a good soldier in a time where our depth blocked him from getting a real shot. great professional.
