I'm also pretty sure Hellebuyck stays for the year. Still need a backup that can get 20 starts though.

List of backups I'd be interested in:
Brossoit
Nedeljkovic
Lyon
Stalock
Stolarz
Halak

Some interesting trade candidates like Comrie and Vladar as well.

Someone like Raanta, Andersen or Jarry would be amazing, but those guys are starters. If the Jets do get a guy like this, it's probably a sign of a Hellebuyck trade in the summer, which feels more and more unlikely to me.

I think the org is likely going to target a goalie back in the Helle trade so I wouldn't worry to much about it. I think Milic is likely already better than Holm anyways so I'm not sweating it.

I know you like Milic. I loved the pick. But Jr to AHL is a big jump. Holm has been pretty good for quite a while now. I'll be very surprised if Milic is that good already.

But regardless of that, even if Milic is already better, the cost of Holm as insurance was negligible. If Milic is not ready we have nothing but Salminen in the entire system.

What kind of a goalie is he going to get back in the Helle trade? Some guy already proven to be not good enough? Maybe not as good as Holm.

I hear Wheeler is available

That is not hearing anything from Helle.

You might be right about the payday. Money on one hand, location on the other.

I wouldn't mind paying Helle a high AAV. I would be leary of too much term.
I feel like when we start analyzing the backup AHL part of the retool... we are talking about how we spend our pennies here haha

I guess TSN didn't have any more room for talking heads in their studio, that's a lot of people staring at their smartphones

Did you quote the wrong post? Are you talking about Holm?

If so, it is not the AHL backup, or even starter I am talking about. It is system depth. It is a player who I don't think we should be giving up on yet. I see him as still progressing so there is still potential there. The cost of finding out is practically nothing.

So ..... how many FA is Chevy going to sign today? Which ones?

As for the meat and potatoes, high level summary of what I'm looking for in this retool:

We aren't going to beat any contender on talent or strength at key positions any longer (C, D, G)

May as well bring in the best responsible two way talent we can find so we can shut down and frustrate top talent on other teams. And win with depth scoring and team play

Islanders are a great example from when Trotz was there. Lost Tavares for nothing and got better. Columbus under Torts after their mass exodus.

Good news is we aren't losing our guys for nothing. We will get decent returns and we will have a wave of good, inexpensive young wingers coming up at least.

If we can get a 2nd pair RD with size back in Scheif or Helle return and extend DeMelo we will be less sexy but better off for winning games when it matters.

I did quote the wrong post, yes

If a goalie doesn't have elite potential, they have essentially zero value in my eyes, that's all.

I'd imagine we likely target a guy like Schmid back from NJ. There is also the factor of Holm is 24 soon to be 25 and might just be heading home.

Near zero maybe. Not quite zero. There will probably be a bunch of goalies of similar value to Holm available today. That is not the point. The cost of giving him one more year to see if he could continue to improve would also be near zero. Among that bunch of goalies of similar value, he is the only one we drafted and invested development in.

He is not likely to ever be a starter, maybe never even a backup. OTOH, he might be good enough to be our backup this year. Even if that is a long shot it doesn't make sense to not place a bet when the cost is so low.

But is NJD going to trade for Helle? Are they willing to sign him?

Schmid looked pretty good with Devils last year. I'd be happy to get him. OTOH, he played 23 AHL games with a 90.5 sv%. Holm played 35 AHL games last year with a 91.1 sv%.
Bird in the hand.

Plenty of room for both.

Doesn't make sense to us, based on our information available, I suppose.

We are talking about a penny in a sport where loonies and twoonies don't move the needle a lot, where 5 dollar bills make an impact and the 10 and 20 dollar bills are few and far between. While I'm at it I guess McDavid is a 50 dollar bill lol

That's how I rationalize my viewpoint anyway

NJ seems to be the loudest in regards to a destination for Helle. That's the team that I have heard the most from the talking heads. I just wonder if even Holm see's the writing on the wall and is deciding to head back to Sweden as he's not really amounting to much. Schmid just lead his team into the playoffs as a 22 year old and just turned 23 not long ago. Holm is 24 soon to be 25.
