So for those who did not like the Monahan trade , if you switch the return (1st for Toffolli , 2nd, 3rd for Monahan) do you like the trade then? Who is better in a vacuum Monahan or Toffoli?)

I'm not convinced Mony is the answer at 2C - but he has been a big help where it was needed even more, the PP.

We'll see how he does with Toffoli added but if he doesn't get going at 5v5 soon I would move him down and use him as a ST specialist. Names can go back to 2C.

I still like the Monahan trade even if he ends up on the 4th line. Our ST needed help in the worst way.

Its LV so fitting under the cap is only a quick call to Gary.

It isn't quite that easy. Or is it?

I feel like I should stop myself because I don’t want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, and it’s more likely Grier is just THAT dumb, but something is fishy with the Hertl trade.

So SJ traded their best player, who is under contract for six more years, AND they retained on him, AND they threw in two 3rd round picks to their biggest rival. They’re helping their biggest rival for the low cost of a 1st (which should be late) and a prospect, who was drafted 32 overall, so nearly a 2nd round talent. It just doesn’t make sense.

Again, I don’t want to sound like a conspiracy theorist because it’s probably just Grier being dumb but what the hell, man. Just seems like an extremely odd trade for them to make.
probably know they are going to be awful for years and want to get out of the contract while they can, he has a nmc so they took the best deal they could get

Unless Hertl demanded out and only would go to Vegas.

Also at age 30 a six year term remaining isn't exactly a plus. They likely wanted to move him before it became unmovable.

Terrible team, terrible contract, terrible fit. That's the reason. They got their chance to get rid of six more years of a player who they neither need nor want there anymore, and they sure took it.

I was 100% sure that they couldn't trade Hertl anywhere, but somehow, they found a dance partner.

Correction, Vegas is getting the thirds.
So in other words ... Sharks are getting one bottom 1st round pick and Vegas is getting two top 3rd round top picks which they will use to trade for a big name in next year's TDL. As we saw this year 3rd round picks gets you a decent player for the playoffs.
I don't understand why teams keep trading with Vegas so they can stay on top while they collect drafts only to trade them again.

That still doesn’t make much sense to me. They’ll be awful for years so Hertl’s $8 million won’t really affect them as they won’t be a cap team/competitive. They basically got a rental price for him for six more years. They’d be better served to hold on to him for now and see if he opens his NMC to more teams down the road if he wants to go to a contender.

Yup. Don't hate the player. Vegas acquired hertly, mantha and hanifin the past few days. None of these teams had to accept those deals and trade them there.

I’d say tough titty to him if it meant you could only get the return they got. I guess they see it becoming an albatross.

Surely VGK would have taken the deal, no leaped at it, without the two 3rds. Or even with only 1 of them.
A bit ridiculous.

seems like someone is speculating based off someone else speculating

There was that tweet yesterday that was posted here from a Sens reporter about something cooking between LA and Boston involving one of Boston's goalies and PLD. That was posted before there was even any hint of these teams working on a trade so I am guessing there was some truth to that tweet.

That's not how Sportsnet had it on the screen when I was watching...

Yikes

So Hertl with 17% retention for 6 years and 2 3rds for a 1st and a prospect (although he's a good one)?

That's one of the worst goddamn trades I've seen in a long time

Wow the Sharks GM takes the award as the dumbest GM ever.

Hertl, by the way, is expected to return in the regular season

Tomas Hertl having retained salary means:
1. San Jose has ALREADY used all of their 3 retained slots next season
2. Has now used 2 slots until July 1, 2027
This significantly reduces their trade flexibility moving forward. A surprising move for a rebuilding team.

They'll have to do it at the draft before the NTC kicks in on July 1. If PLD loves his west coast metropolitan lifestyle, he's surely amending it to include Boston after this leaked

Also a quick flight/drive to Montreal as well
