There is a risk that we give up assets for a dud as well. Tarasenko on the Rangers last year is a good example. There is risk either way. Adding pieces as has been shown over the years guarantees nothing.
yes but with that risk we would still have the option of moving perfetti up the line up

Both Perftti and McGroarty will be big parts of this team long term. No need to pit them against each other already. I actually see them being perfect fits on the same line.

McGroarty Perfetti Ehlers may be the teams second line next season.

Very true.

I can see ownership loving the idea of spending money to help other teams out

Sure by at this point in the season real world $ cost of retaining what Tampa did for Henrique is like 350k... pocket change for NHL teams. Seems worth buying additional draft lottery picks considering how far below the cap the Jets will be.

Knies did it with Toronto last season. Signed after his NCAA playoffs got in a few regular season games and than had a good playoffs for them. IMO McGroarty is a much better player.
Similar level prospect and was a HobeyBaker finalist. They play the same game and Knies is better skater. Also Knies didn’t make an impact or help them win. He only played because Toronto had zero depth. Almost any other playoff team he is in the pressbox or AHL.

doubt they want to spend money on low% picks

I sure hope he signs with us. I am always afraid with college players that stay in college that they will decide that they stay in college for 4 years and then they get to make their own decision as to which team they sign with. Mcgroarty has two more years until he has complete freedom.
Totally agree!!

Zero depth seems to be a bit of a party line, but I think McGroarty shows a lot more than people think. This discussion does seem funny do me as I am one of the least bullish posters about prospects on this board and only ever remember being really bullish on 2 prospects prior to this and that was Scheifele and Ehlers. I just think this kid has it and will make a difference from day 1.

How can they possibly have space for this. This loophole is getting ridiculous.

I am not impressed with paying any of the prices being paid today (other than Byram for Middlestat but we don't have a d-man like Byram whose reputation exceeds his impact). Felt already uncomfortable with moving a 1st for Monahan. Hopefully Chevy doesn't give into peer pressure and make a desperate move despite many urging him to.

Forcing Bowness to play Ehlers top line is the best deadline acquisition Chevaldayoff can make and it costs nothing!

I don't see how they're similar level prospects? McGroaty's D+2 year is blowing Knies' out of the water.

Perfetti has it a wall, I think he finds his way back but it likely takes awhile. McGoarty will be pretty fresh and fits the mold almost perfectly for what Bones is looking for. Personally I see him signing and being given a ton of opportunity down the stretch. Should be an easy sell for Chevy, tangling a carrot of an ELC year and a chance to be part of an NHL playoff drive.
I hope you’re right, because McGroarty could be a good playoff add that won’t cost anything, but nothing Bones or this organization has done really suggests to me that’s gonna happen.

I don't fully buy the Bones narrative. I do think he leans to vets as the vast majority of coaches do, but players that get into his dog house is usually as a result of unnecessary risk in their games. IMO there is a good chance McGroarty comes in and a Bones darling because he plays the exact north south game he wants, with enough offense to take advantage of scoring opportunities.

Sorry, you are correct McG is a better prospect but they are similarly styled players and Knies had a Hobey level season playing on a top team and is a better skater and he had no affect on the leafs playoffs.

Not sure about a day, but NCAA players signing very quickly after their season has finished is very common. Knies last season, Copp for us, usually a couple every year. Teams use burning a year of ELC as leverage.
Copp is the only one I remember. His last game was March 21st. I think it took him a week to sign with the jets. @KingBogo

Edit: confirmed the dates. - took a full week. Signed on the 28th.

The recent example of it taking much longer would be Gautier - he wanted to sign with phill last March - team said no. And well, the rest is history.

Not sure about Knies.

Edit 2: knies last game was April 8, signed April 9. So it happens. I imagine there was a rush to get him in the line up as the leafs wanted to play him. Could depend on how late mcgroarty goes and how bad jets want to play him. If at all.
