What to do with Mo

Why do we hate our best players. You’d swear we were a bottom feeding team. Toxic.
We are in an age of disposable consumerism. Nobody looks to fix stuff anymore. A player has a base spell and you put him in the waste bin and start shopping for a glittery cheaply made replacement with less than a 30 day warrantee.
Mo didnt have a great game. It's up to keefe to ensure he takes care of the details to clean up some bad behaviour.

It’s been 2 seasons since Mo has looked like a #1 D and even then, it was only offensively.

Mo hasn’t been that guy since the start of 2019-2020 and I don’t know why we keep telling ourselves he is.

He needs to be sheltered 5v5 at this point and that is not something you say about a #1 D.

On top of that, he’s losing value as each day passes and I don’t see any reality where we can afford to pay a defenceman that can’t defend 6+ a season.

We are also in a world of hyper-stereotyping. Everyone sees something and immediately thinks everyone else is "this one way" and fails to acknowledge the range of diverse opinions that actually exist.

Mo is not one of our best players anymore.

Based on what? 6 games? I think it's likely unrealistic to believe he will win a Norris, but at the same time a lot of teams would take Rielly in a heartbeat. Ok so he's not at top 5 D in the NHL. Is he top 15? Top 20? Do we have a top 15/top 20 in the organization?

No, we don’t.

He’s getting walked a lot and it needs to be addressed. But, to say we need to get rid of him or limit his ice time, I find it sad.

Why is it sad? It’s been happening for 8 years. When do we accept that he might not improve that part of his game?

He’s not just getting walked, either. He’s starting to make poor decisions in each area of the ice. His pinches have led to multiple odd man rushes, his d zone coverage without the puck is nonexistent, and he rarely even makes a great play on the PP.

That’s the most painful aspect - it seems to be his decisions which are suffering, he’s still a physical specimen and a great athlete.

This is an off-season discussion, but one that needs to be seriously considered. With Holl emerging and Brodie in the fold we might have the right side top 4 stability be in a position to gamble on a Dermott emerging like a Pelech/Pulock/Holl, a Sandin emerging as a day one impact player, or an external top 4 D being able to do an adequate job cheaper.

I love the idea of Rielly as a career Leaf and leader, but when his current contract his up something will have to give somewhere meaningful at the top end of the roster, and I feel the league wide shakeup around expansion will lead to it happening this off-season

What's with this thread? Rielly is probably the most important piece Leafs have after Matthews.

I think there cheesemakers in Ontario are going to have a blast; seems there is "Whine and Cheese" party in the Leafs nation

It's quite obvious that rielly is the only 1st pairing defenseman in the league that's ever been scored on, walked on or beaten period!
I've never seen Chara walked o... Hmmm
Well Keith has never allowed a goal when he's on the i.... Ahhh
How about.....
Give me a few minutes and I will be back

Rielly is one season removed from a top 5 Norris finish, ranked a top 20 D-man in the league by the NHL network heading into this season and was even voted a top 20 D-man on the main boards of HF and you know how they feel about anything Leaf related. He's not a "2" lmfao.

Rielly has his faults but god damn some of you overreact.

Hes not good defensively, when Gardiner was here he was better than Rielly Defensively for sure.

If we take a players top season and immediately declare him based on his best season we end up signing players like Jason Blake, Clarkson, and putting unrealistic expectations on players like Kadri, Phaneuf etc. I prefer to be more realistic with my expectations. Hes a number 2 d for me.

Are we really going to keep this thread open? Shut it down. Yes, MO should stay. Yes, Mo is a #1. Let’s move on now.

You can argue whether to keep him or trade him, but I don’t see argument for him being a #1D.

He's consistently giving up far more chances than he’s producing, this year it’s just so pronounced with Brodie seemingly excelling away from him.

That’s with Holl and Muzz taking the difficult drone starts most the time, too.

1D don’t get caved over and over again. McAvoy, Jones, Pie, Jodi etc don’t consistently give up far more chances than they create.

Of course we keep him and keep playing him big minutes but the quality of his defensive play and a lot of high pressure decisions with the puck have not been good for a while now and should be worked on...
