Where has that elite offence gone?

If nothing else, we should at least give Sandin/Dermott/Lehtonen a chance with Brodie in my opinion.

Ask me again in 10 games. A 6 game sample size is too small.

Played injured last year and still put up 27 in 47 while not getting PP1 time for a large portion of the season, the year before he had 72 in 82. I am not ruling him out because of 6 games.

His defensive woes, inability to shoot or stick handle is what has made me think we'd be better off trading him for another top pairing D.
Unfortunately he's not getting any better defensively, if we wanna win the Cup he can't be on the top pair and we can't afford to pay him 7-8 million a year on his next contract.

What top D are we trading him for? Keep in mind he needs to be making < 5 mil. I agree with not signing him for 7-8 mil on his next contract, I don't think it is worth it, but for 5 mil he is worth it.

This thread is overdramatic, but I will say Rielly’s next contract does concern me and depending on his asking price, I wouldn’t be opposed to trading him down the line.

Hainsey is the only partner who has really worked with him, which tells me Rielly may not be an easy guy to partner with.

This is a silly thread, Rielly is our #1 D and we're keeping him. I say this as someone who is not a big fan of the guy. I would like our fanbase to hold him accountable his ardent supporters who talk about him like a Norris caliber defenseman are off their rocker. And the idea that he is the "true leader of this team" might be true off-ice but we really don't know, it sure as hell isn't demonstrated by his on ice play, he does not "play the right way" he's a defenseman who sucks in his own zone that is the polar opposite of that description.

I was really hoping he would have grown at this point but let's hope Brodie/Muzzin/Holl can pick up the slack. Barring an outrageous contract demand we are stuck with this guy as our #1. Though the prospect of Rielly wanting over 7 million is one of the reasons I would have be on board with biting the Pietrangelo bullet and dumping cap in the summer or fleecing Vegas for Nate Schmidt then maybe we could have shipped off Rielly. Now it's probably too late, not going to get what he's worth in the offseason and he's not being traded today.

In short, trading Rielly is dumb but I'm glad some posters are finally opening their eyes to the kind of player he is.

If there was a trade that made sense I’d be onboard with moving him. Hate to think how badly he’ll bend Dubas over on his next contract, he’s clearly not a A number 1 D man, good, but not a true top D man IMO.

If we move him, someone else is facing top-quality opponents now. I am guessing Dermott, does he look good playing 22 mins a night against Draisaitl or McDavid? It is a 6 game sample size of Brodie-Rielly, I think we wait this one out, Rielly is never going to be a #1 shutdown D, but he has shown he can be decent defensively and elite on offense.
Muzzin - Holl tends to take the top units and I expect we'd trade Rielly for a hockey player, likely a D who is more rounded and not as offensively gifted.

I don't think anyone wants to dump him for scraps, it's just a question of his role/spot going forward.

Personally I'd give it a bit more time, even give him a look with Holl while Muzz - Brodie do the heavy defensive lifting.

Mo seems lost right now.

I've been saying this since last season. Rielly is nowhere near a top pairing defenseman. He's a offensive defenseman who lacks hockey sense and iq. His defensive game is abysmal. It's pretty sad when he's pretty much been our worst defenseman this season. Maybe our issue isn't finding Rielly a partner, I'm starting to think that maybe Rielly is the issue. I would definitely look at trading him this season.

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Why do you think Brodie is a good Partner for him in hockey terms. It doesn’t look like Brodie can figure out what he is going to do next. Maybe if he had a consistency in his game it would make Brodies adjustment more stable.
The loss to Edmonton was “just” one of those games he said a couple days ago. Yeah right, this guy just minimizing everything gets sickening

Should he be kicking garbage cans? yelling about referees? That's not what leaders do. Not good ones anyways.

His inability to stickhandle? Now you're just throwing out hockey terms and hoping someone agrees with you. His transition game and ability to skate the puck out of trouble is incredible.

Ha Messier grabbed guy by the throat in Edmonton. He sugar coats and minimizes way to much. I’ve seen him ornery in the past. Thats when he is at his ultimate best. He looks bland so far. Not good at all.

apperenetly MR only plays well with Garbage defenders. Or is it that he looks good because his partner was always trash ? (the hot girl with ugly friends syndrome LOL)

maybe for 1 game try these pairing and see what happens.

lehtonen/dermott brodie

Yes I would like to see those pairings as well.

Can't be dumping players every time they struggle.

But yes, he's been terrible so far.

But he'll be good again soon.
I always pick up for him on here. He has to pick it up and start carrying pucks again. This drop pass overuse is garbage skill kill that is starting to annoy me.
I love it for a line change instead of a dump-in but it doesn’t have to be used so damn much. Nylander was a offensive zone entry master couple years ago. I’m not sure what his numbers looked like last year after it started getting agonizingly over used.
We need players carrying the puck in. It’s skill kill and flow slow ha.
Morgs should talk to the coach and get him to activate him more somehow in their style. If Mo is not a skating defenseman he is being misused and underutilized. I just don’t know,Mo is bland.......

I think he gets let off the hook because people like him as a person. On ice, it's just a complete fire drill every time the opponent has the puck in our end. Suddenly, his offensive game isn't clicking either.

His cap could be split between 2 good depth players, and I do not think it would hurt us. Gives a pathway for some of the younger guys. At some point, Sandin and Dermott need to be given 20 mins a night for 20 games to see what they are.

Split between which 2 available defenceman?

Not even sure I’d spend it on 2 defencemen. Perhaps an upgrade to our forward depth, too. Or maybe we take Andersen’s 5m, add a million and try to find a Lehner/Markstrom.

I’d really like to see what Sandin and Lehtonen are capable of.

He hasn't been good this year but I'd give him some time with Brodie. Rielly has gone through a carousel of partners and has a new one again with no camp or preseason.

That doesn't excuse him for (personally) sucking so far, but hopefully he bounces back and finds chemistry with Brodie.

If his struggles continue next season, maybe trade him at the deadline.

This is up there with the dumbest threads I’ve ever seen.

Reilly is a top pairing dman and we’re keeping him. 5 games (where he hasnt even been bad) doesn’t change that.

If we could get a better fitting D, I make the trade. His higher contract and lack of growth is concerning.
He should be further ahead in his development. Defensive acuman is lacking.
What's the plus needed with Rielly to get Seth Jones or Werenski?
