This is up there with the dumbest threads I’ve ever seen.

Reilly is a top pairing dman and we’re keeping him. 5 games (where he hasnt even been bad) doesn’t change that.
I've seen dumber but at best... threads equally as dumb on a regular basis.
The op should know better because he is generally sensible. The problem is that this place has been turned into a player crucifying cesspool for some time so it isnt abnormal behavior.

I know I give Marner shit but that's only because I think he could end up the best winger in the game so I hold him to Kucherov/Kane/Marchand level expectations. Do people here think 1D's never make mistakes? Rielly just spent the last 2 games facing the best player in the world and another top 5-10 player. For the most part, both of those guys were quiet at ES.

Matthews made prime Karlsson look foolish in his very 1st NHL game, I didn't see Sens fans saying not to re-sign him or that he's not top pairing.

The only thing I'd like to see Rielly do more often is go end-to-end with the puck more often, it's one of the best skills he has. He reminds me a lot of Nylander in the way he can weave his way through the neutral zone and gain zone entry but I'd say Rielly is stronger on his skates.

Is this one of those "LeaFlander" parody threads, or is it a real honest to goodness started by a "LeaFlander" thread?

Maybe I'm getting old but it's really getting hard to tell:sarcasm:

Because I disagree with what I'd like to see out of a leader?
By the way, there's a big difference between a leader grabbing a teammate by the throat and a leader calling out his team as a whole. Personally, I prefer a leader that leads by example. John Tavares does that. Hopefully it can wear off on Rielly a little more.
Carter hart went ballistic last night. Lost it after being hing out to dry one to many times. Did you see it.... i Like tavares. It was just a talking point that it happens. I don’t think it’s something i would put up with around me in a locker room either. I wouldn’t take someone grabbing a friend by the neck if it was out of line. :) Actually even ifbthey were out of line I wouldn’t allow it ha

Other than Rielly having been a mainstay with the team for the Leafs the last seven seasons, I really don't get why people are so averse to trading him. He's just not good defensively and on most nights a net negative 5 on 5. He's great on the powerplay, but the Leafs have internal options to fill his role. The Leafs also need to make room for Sandin and Lehtonen. It's really time to move on and get significant assets for him.

Rielly's fate will probably be tied to how Lehtonen, Sandin, and Liljegren progress. If they don't develop or make an impact in the nhl they'll have no choice but to re-sign Rielly out of necessity.

Personally, I like Rielly, but I don't like the idea of signing him to a long term contract at a big dollar amount. I just don't think a team can be a true contender with such a poor defensive defensemen as their #1.
The sad truth is the Leafs won’t be able to resign Mo let alone acquire a true number one D man simple because it’s impossible when half your cap goes to four players.........

Holl was the one shutting McDavid down, Rielly got walked by him several times.

Historically, Rielly has been an elite offensive driver with a terrible defensive impact, with overall strong positive results. So far this year he's still bad defensively, but his offensive game has fallen off a cliff and his overall impact is pretty awful. Hopefully he starts being more aggressive and accomplishes a lot more offensively, since it doesn't look like he'll ever be able to fix his defensive game

How many points did LD and McDavid put up at ES the two games? Regardless if Rielly got walked once or twice McDavid didn't score.

Do you seriously think the best d-men in the league don't get fooled by top forwards?

LMFAO

Last game against Edmonton Rielly played 12:52 against McDavid. In that span, the Leafs had 25% of the shot attempts, got out-shot 18-5, and outscored 1-0.

But sure, he got walked "once or twice". At least this time it didn't end up as a month-long highlight on Sportsnet.

I think it's long past the point of ever hoping Rielly to have a competent defensive game.

I can't get over how he struggles with even basic fundamentals though. Too many times he tries to stick check, doesn't stay squared up with the guy he's defending, and gets made a fool of. And for being 220lbs he sure doesn't win as many puck battles as you think he would.

The hallmark of Rielly's game is his transition. He's got a great outlet and can skate the puck himself with good proficiency.

But does it really make sense to $8M+ for just that?

Im going to just bump this now and get it out of the way

Idk why people are upset about the thread. Rielly has been very bad to start the year, and probably our worst defenseman.

I still give him the benefit of the doubt because he's been an elite offensive play driver his entire career (and absolutely garb defensively) but not only is he not helping offensively this season, he's been outright bad at it.

I honestly think Rielly's situation sort of resembles Phaneuf's almost to a tee. He's been tasked with some hard minutes over the years and as a guy that was drafted due to his offensive zone competency, his deployment as an all-round guys didn't exactly shine the best light on him. I'm still under the impression that he's been battling some sort of leg issue for the last couple of years but he's consistently been terrible with defending rushes and in-zone decisions. I think the stabilizing presence that TJ Brodie has become for Rielly has less to do with the player and more to do with the emergence of the Muzzin-Holl pairing usurping those hard minutes. I'd love to see what Sandin could do with the minutes Rielly gets.

Sandin makes too many simple mistakes at this point to play anything more than a sheltered role. He has amazing IQ, but he still needs to learn more at the AHL level before he gets to the NHL in any kind of non-sheltered role. Since he just recently turned 20 years old, I doubt the Leafs rush him.

Oh yeah, no doubt. To add, Sandin's physique is no where close to Rielly's either where he can absorb checks and still make plays. I'm hoping to see this take place a year or two from now, assuming continued growth in Sandin's game and physique. I'm honestly hoping to see a Jake Gardiner like impact with Sandin, adding a reliable stretch pass to the team's breakouts.

Back to back stinkers for Mo.

I hate that this thread exists and disagree with it but if his offensive game isn't going, he's unwatchable.
