What to do with Mo

I think he gets let off the hook because people like him as a person. On ice, it's just a complete fire drill every time the opponent has the puck in our end. Suddenly, his offensive game isn't clicking either.

His cap could be split between 2 good depth players, and I do not think it would hurt us. Gives a pathway for some of the younger guys. At some point, Sandin and Dermott need to be given 20 mins a night for 20 games to see what they are.
I really liked Dermott tonight.

I don't think he will take 5.

Even at 5, I am not sure he is 4.3 million better than Sandin.

I've watched him for 8 years now. He's had a couple good season, even one where he started to look like his defence was coming around. However, since Keefe took over, he's stagnated.

We want to be a better defensive team, I don't see why we let him off the hook.

Friend, I'm one of Morgan's biggest boosters, but I don't let him off the hook. He is not a complete defenseman, but he certainly is a good player who has been a solid, and at times dominant player for the Leafs. In his own zone he makes bonehead plays, so too did/does a player like Carlson/Burns/Karlsson/Subban/Severson etc. My point is not to suggest he's always going to be in contention for a Norris, but that he has skills that are valuable and he'll be paid accordingly. Contract negotiations will help determine whether he'll be paid here or elsewhere. Let's see how things develop before we dump on our guys.

Fk no. Dmen take a while to adjust to new partners.

Much too early to have this conversation.

Why is it that's always the excuse with Rielly. Brodie doesn't seem to be having any issues adjusting. He's played solid every game minus the Ottawa game, whereas Rielly has looked brutal for majority of our games.

Same thing happened when Hainsey and Rielly started out.

Ugh, thats not how player values/contracts work.

Why dont we trade Marner for 3 35pt players? 105 pts > Marner's production.

Since Keefe took over he's been constantly dealing with injuries and has now played a healthy 6 games this season with a new defense partner.

Everybody wanted to trade Brodie 3 damn games ago... chill people.

I used to always say the same things - it's his partners, it's early, maybe he's injured.

Feels like I am just burnt out on him. Watching a lot of other teams lately, and not many have a player that plays 20+ mins and gets burried so much. Seems like there is a prolonged shift with 3-4 scoring chances every shift these days.

One player who i would absolutely love but he's pretty much untouchable now would be Jakob Chychrun. The kid is an absolute all around stud defenseman and locked into an amazing long term deal.

I'd be fine in pairing Rielly with Holl if the appetite for a change is there. I don't see blueline depth to the tune of dropping Rielly to the third pair or trading him away altogether. Not confident that Dermott is ready for that much of a promotion.

Rielly still has a full season left on his deal after this one. I'm not thinking about putting him on the trade block even if I'm not thinking about inking him to a new contract just yet either.

Trading him in season is out of the question. I’m going with let fans in the building to shout a few boos his way so he wakes up.

Oh Leafs nation, never change. Even if the Leafs had Gretzky in his prime and were winning a few cups, there'd be fans out there that would hate him because he "doesnt hit enough". It's been 6 games, relax. It's not as if Matthews has been tearing it up either, and I hardly doubt you'd be calling for a demotion or a trade now would you? Fact is, Rielly needs more of a shut down defencemen as his partner as that suits his style more than Brodie or Barrie ever did

Rielly is the main problem on the D core. Finally play with a good partner but no improvement defensively from him. You could live with defensive mistakes earlier but now with the team showing defensive improvement, he sticks out.

Rielly is going nowhere. Elite offensive puck mover with good vision.

Im all for a narrative that hes worse than he is so we can sign him cheaper for sure though.

The good news is we’ve got the luxury of time on our hands, since he’s a UFA after next season. Last season you can say he was injured and couldn’t get into a rhythm, Ceci as a partner didn’t help.

Keep him with Brodie and see if he can’t figure things out. He won’t be a shutdown guy but he can still be a very effective puck mover and point producer.

Also while the idea is interesting, I wouldn’t pair him with Holl yet, maybe in like 15 games when guys are more comfortable and we can experiment a bit more with the safety net of chemistry in previous pairings in case things don’t work out. It might not even come to that if Rielly can figure things out.

Rielly has definitely left us wanting but not trading him just yet unless the return is too good to turn down.

Maybe to Sakic for a package that includes Byram. They want to win now and might overpay.

He’s been brutal but it’s early with a new partner

Half the d have been trash... Muzzin, Bogo

Rielly leaves a lot to be desired. He lacks a good shot to be an offensive dman and lacks iq to be solid in his own zone. He is more of a 2/3 guy and I wouldn't be sad to move on from him. He gets a lot of love because he was the only bright spot defensively for a lot of years but that just shows how desperate we were.

Rielly has some warts to his game but he's an offensive play driver who leads the team on and off the ice and seems to genuinely love the team and it's fans

Love him for what he is, not what he isn't

I'd be willing to reevaluate him at the end of the season because of his contract situation but this type of talk after half a dozen games with a new partner looks knee jerk a quite frankly stupid to me

When Mo is going, he is skating all the time and his passes (including stretch) are all crisp. He has a good active stick and does a decent job of keeping players to outside.

He usually is great at getting shots through to the net with accurate shot but that has also changed over the years.

The moment he stops skating and starts puck watching, he goes to shit. His vision is sub par (other than stretch pass) which he doesn't do much anymore.

I'm torn on whether to re-sign him or let him go. Especially with the kind of LD depth Leafs have coming up.

We could use Brodie + Dermott instead, and then bring up Sandin.

If Rielly thinks he can just get away with play like this he has another thing coming.
The last part if he thinks this is ok then he’s getting called out as he is now. No fire in him man is my beef. Looks disinterested.

I’m always big Morgs defense type poster. It’s only 6 games. 6 crap games by him. So he deserves the criticism. Six uninspired games in a row casts a poor reflection. I would still consider trading him some time in the next year because he likely won’t fit in our cap. Some time between now and Christmas Dubas should probably move him

He’s the best D we have and had for a really long time. I’d take him over Kaberle tbh. The issue is he’s leaned on too heavily in all situations. I’ll also say, I don’t think we’ve ever gotten a truly good partner for him. I think him and Brodie will grow into a good pairing though.
