What to do with Mo

Great game from Rielly last night. His metrics have been struggling all season, but the last few games I've been pleased by his defensive play. He's been more engaged in the corners and been breaking up a lot of plays with an active stick. He'll always be prone to bad reads, but I love having him out there 25 minutes a night. Big shout out to Brodie for fitting so well on that pair, they're getting better and better together.

I don't get this poll. I don't see how we can part with him. I feel like we missed our big chance with Petro. Imagine if we had traded Marner...

Rielly-Petro
Muzzin-Brodie

That is ignoring the bonus assets for trading Marner.

Pietro's 31 years old and on a 7 year contract so I suggest you revisit this thought say 4 years from now.

I feel like our D is in really good shape now as it is. Signing Brodie seems like an A+ move so far and with Holl playing the way he is, I'd say our top 4 is well above average. And after that I like our 3rd pairing and our depth, I really don't see the problem here. And Marner's having a killer year so far, subtracting him from our lineup isn't something I want to contemplate at all.

Marner is 3rd in points this year and is on pace for 48 goals - 82 assists - 130 points / 82GP.

Your solution is to trade a 23 year old putting up those numbers?

Well Gary if we won a Cup no one would care, if we didn't it would be a disastrous mistake.
I can live with the current roster but I see no reality where we can replace Mo without bringing in someone from the outside. I think we are married to Mo for the foreseeable future.

Numbers are great but Cups are better unless you're an Oiler fan. Marner was just a name, could have been Nylander. Either way that was the only option for upgrading Mo we've ever really had. The idea of going forward with our group without him is scary as hell.

Just a heads up, but Pietrangelo didn't have a cup at Marner or Nylander's age either....might want to give the boys a little more time.

We all want to win the cup. I'm not sure what you're getting at here TBH, maybe you think I'm one of the people who want to get rid of Rielly? If that's the case the let me set you straight, I'm a big fan and I said a while ago that if anyone's earned the right to go through a bad week or two without people getting on his case it's Morgan Rielly.

The way this fan base turns on their players is embarrassing. Not sure there's a single player on the team ( maybe Matthews?) who hasn't had fans dumping on them at one point or another. Rielly is such a class act, has played great for us for years and now it's his turn to be in the fans doghouse and I think it's a joke.

I think you are missing the point. If we need a true top tier 1 D to win the Cup their accomplishments are irrelevant. It's not about them as players its about forward money vs d money. I love all our players but there is no 8-10 million dollar D coming in with so much money at forward.

That being said this group could surprise.

I'm not dumping on Mo. I'm just saying if people feel he's not the 1D we need a forward has to move to upgrade. I can live with Mo as our guy. I also admit I am biased to Petro, he's one of my faves.

How many teams in the salary cap have won a cup with a $8-$10 million D-man?
Now compare that to teams that have the highest paid forwards.

Elite forwards > Elite D-men of the same level

Forwards are more valuable. No team is trading McDavid for any D-man in the NHL, every team would trade their best D-man for McDavid.

I'm sure we can agree Hedman's 7.85 deal is close enough.

I'm not sure it's a fair question since it is a fairly recent salary threshold. A more fair question is how many teams gave won a cup with a number 1 D that was better than Rielly.

Again, I'm not married to the idea, just saying that was our only real chance to upgrade our #1D spot.

LOL.

That logic is flawed since he's the best player in the world. Of course no team is going to trade for a lesser player. I'm pretty sure the asking price for a Seth Jones is going to be in Marner territory.

Fair enough. I'm more than fine with Rielly and I've never believed you need a true #1 to win or whatever other cliches there are. I mean I think our top 4 is great, that's better than having a true #1d (whatever that means) if the next 3 guys are subpar.

Marner is 8 younger than Pietro, that says it all right there, or most of it anyway. A 23 year old superstar is one of the most valuable assets in the league, even if he is slightly overpaid.

I admit I'm probably biased when it comes to Rielly, I just love the guys attitude. That being said, if his play goes downhill and it's best for the team to move on from him, I'm fine with that too.

Seth Jones with 1 year left on his contract does not = Marner with 5 years left lmfao what is this? Even Jackets fans realize that but sure you know better.

Remove McDavid then, let's take the top 5 C's in the game and compare them to the top 5 D-men.

1. Mackinnon
2. Matthews
3. Drai
4. Crosby
5. Eichel

vs

1. Hedman
2. AP
3. Josi
4. Jones
5. whoever

The top group is more valuable than the bottom group easily. Would you trade Mackinnon, Matthews or Drai for any of the D-men mentioned? I wouldn't.

I would never touch Jones for Marner. Jones is UFA after next season. He might just get traded if he doesn't commit to the BJS *(which seems unlikely).
JOnes value to to his upcoming UFA status is not that high to bring back a Marner

Sure I'd trade Dra for Jones if he was signed, or Hedman. Makar, Hughes and Dahlin would also be worth considering depending on the make up team in question. I mean Jones was traded for a guy who was projecting as a 1 C. I don't think it's quite as black and white as all that.

At the moment there is talent gap between the top young C and top young D. I think that talent gap has more to do with it than position.

Would you trade Eichel for prime Bobby Orr? of course you would. How about prime Pronger or Lidstrom? It would be mighty tempting.

Edit: forgot to point out the Hall-Larsson trade

Rielly is getting at least 7 million, if not 8. Especially after taking a team friendly second/third contract.
I agree he will get that in market but just not here .... he is a victim of too many overpays on roster ... and 2 UFA Edmundson's are far better value for us on defense ... in 2 years one of Dermy or Sandin will have to move up and 1 should be ready for top 4 usage by then

Since Jake Muzzin wanted to re-sign and that's what happened, why wouldn't Rielly also do that?

I hope he does take a hometown discount to resign here ... at 5-5.5M per for 5-6 years sure I am all for it ... but if he wants 7-8M AAV then I'd rather have a goaler and Zach ... with a flat CAP for 3 years it is gonna hurt us a lot next couple years

Leafs have no more "Overpays" than any team and less than most.
When has a Leaf left they wanted to keep? We hear these stories and they never leave.

Mo looks slightly better vs Vancouver but I am not going to take that too seriously as everyone looks amazing vs. Vancouver. Very interested how he will look against Montreal and some of the game later this month.

Brodie looks rock solid, though.
