And let's not forget that McDavid and Drai have both played a game more than Mitch. Give Mitch another game and he could easily be tied with Drai, and just a few under McDavid.
It's too bad that the Oilers next two games starting tonight are once again against the Senators. So the chances of Marner being tied with them won't be good.

I asked before before and I will ask it again. Why did Mike Babcock refuse to play them on the same line at 5v5?
He would... for 1 shift.. in a 2-0 game in which we probably wouldn’t get anything going, and when the 1 shift they played didn’t result in goal, they’d be split up again, really was a weird choice, but whatever it’s working well now

So I guess that was his excuse to the media that he at least tried it and split them up when it did not work.

Oh your best goal scorer playing with your best playmaker being effective?

Seems like only 1 man on earth couldn't figure this out.... what are the odds that he happened to be our coach.

Babcock gave interviews where he said them together wouldn't work although he never tried. Just an ood guy. He seemed to not want to do the obvious to look brillinat, yet obvious is so because it works.

I mean, I kind of get the logic behind it. It's the same as when the Leafs split Mats Sundin and Alex Mogilny up back in the early 00's; because they were both so dangerous having them on different lines meant teams had to defend against both separately rather than together. But Babcock's stubborn refusal to even give it a shot was just plain stupid.

Marner with 25 minutes, ridiculous, that has to be a career high. What a gem this kid is, all over the ice.
I can't get over this absurd workload he takes on in this compressed schedule and never looks fatigued for even a second.

he's pretty great out there. I think he was robbed of an assist on Rielly's goal but oh well
At least I'm not the only person who thought that, because when I saw the goal get scored I thought for sure Marner would be getting one assist watching the play as it happened. So I was surprised that it Rielly's goal was announced as being unassisted.

Really, what an idiot. over 3 years of never playing them together and far too little. And the style he had them play, jesus.

I hope he never coaches again.

I never saw that as inexcusable exactly because the core rationale was true: they could and did drive their own lines. We got 50 goals from John Tavares and 40 goals from Auston Matthews -- that's pretty f***ing remarkable production from two separate lines. The cost of that, though, was Marner and Matthews never had the chance to develop any actual chemistry, and it showed. So you had what should've been a pair of aces up your sleeve on paper play like a single jack in reality. And that's how you find yourself getting clowned by Bruce Cassidy every April.

The most damning indictment of Mike Babcock in my opinion is that the team under his tenure only every played as equal to (rarely) or less than (frequently) the sum of its parts.

Babcock’s road map to success was to have the elite scoring distributed throughout the line up evenly, play a low event, burn up the clock type game, have someone supply the 2-1 go ahead goal, lock it down, rinse and repeat. Not necessarily designed for fan satisfaction, winning scoring titles or the best use of generational talent. If we win a cup and can choose the fun way, of course go with that, but I think Babcock just had something different in mind.
