Was he noticeable out there? Curious, I watched a bit of the game but barely noticed him... McDavid and Matthews seemed to always be visible. Like I said, I didnt catch all the game, maybe he made alot of good plays I didn't see.

When Mitch is at his best, the opposition doesn't notice him out there until it's much too late:nod: and that's definitely all part of the Magic Show

"Money Mitch", who was apparently a worse player than Aho, Barzal, Tkachuk and [add a multitude of players] has a pretty good chance of cracking 100 pts in the last 82 regular season games played within the next 10 game window.

Overpaid by 2 to 2.5mm btw.
100 pts/ season apparently isnt enough but the 127 seasonal pt streak he is currently on might make people think about going into exile sooner than later.

ahhh the good ol days:naughty: what a bunch of maroons spurred on by the tweets of Doom from Dreger who was again pretending to be in the room in the desperate hopes of propping up his self anointed title of "insider" and all the tumescent purple grandiosity it suggests

HF rule of thumb - any young player that has one hot season is instantly as good or better than matthews and marner because that guy is obviously better defensively too.

that my good man is not a HF rule of thumb, that is a LeaFland(not to be confused with LeafsNation) trademark, who just happen to post here on HF and never know when to just STFU

I hope everybody that wanted to trade him last offseason thinks long and hard about how it would have felt to see him do this on another team instead.

Came looking for this thread to give MM his due. It's early but so far Mitch seems to be in a better place than what we saw from him last season. He's been nothing short of fantastic.

While in the past he certainly warranted some of his criticisms, I wanted to trade Mitch not because he was bad but rather, he was good enough to be valuable to a team wanting to trade us a more complimentary good player. I felt, he provided us the most bang for the buck to bring in a real difference maker or two.

But I was never in the 'only way to improve is to trade Marner' camp. I also felt Dubas had a chance to remake the supporting cast - without touching the core. Moving redundant 1 dimensional guys like Kapanen and Mango and not re-signing guys like Barrie. In the end that's exactly what he did and I'm glad that's the route he's taken.

If you look at this very closely it's amazing how Marner makes this pass to Matthews before he scored his goal.

Yeah, people are salivating all over AM34's goal (and for good reason - it was filthy!) but the whole play with Marner spinning around the pick and touch passing the puck to an incoming Matthews is just sublime.

I wouldn't call pointing out areas for potential improvement whining.

Sums it up nicely for me. I would only add that our competition this season (and so far especially) has been incredibly weak defensively which adds some context to the point totals so while I'm very happy with the way he's looked so far, he has to bring it against the best teams in the playoffs and until he proves he can do that, I can't say he's worth what he's paid, not just yet. I'm not complaining, it's not like he's overpaid a ton or anything but I'm not quite ready to give him the keys to the city for piling up points over a dozen games against teams that don't know how to play defence.

Certainly not facing Tampa or Boston which would be more telling. I am wanting to see how we do against Montreal now compared to the sloppy 1st game of the season.

It does suck that we appear to be without Simmonds for around 6 weeks though per Friedman today.

I hadn't heard that. Yikes. Not good at all.

If you're going to "Overpay" a player, make it a 23 year-old that's this damn good. It's nice to not hear as much about his contract.

Interesting to note that Marner needs 2 points in the next game to achieve a ppg in his career. He is pretty damn close to hitting this mark and would do so more than 3 years younger than Patrick Kane achieved it, more than 2 years younger than Kucherov and more than 5 years younger than Panarin.

At this point, I have no idea what he is capable of anymore.

Wait, they're actually discussing if Marner is a superstar? Hahahahahahahahaha.

:biglaugh:

Man, I knew sports media was stupid, but like... WOW.

Am I the only one who doesn't care if people think he's a superstar or not? All I know and care about is that he's a fantastic player.

I did not think there would be a debate in the Toronto media if Marner is considered a superstar.
The thing with Tronto media, many are not Leaf fans. They come from towns throughout the country because this is the big city after all, where they can actually earn a living talking sports. They still are fans of other teams, sometimes they don't even try to hide it.

The only people in the Toronto media who are Leafs fans would be Jeff O'Neil and Bryan Hayes.

This is true. If you're going to do great things in the media, it's gotta be here a lot of the time. That doesn't happen nearly as much in the other markets where people are locales.
I also think there's an odd thing here where it's such a bad thing to seem, like a "Homer", yet ok in every other market.

It's because everybody tunes in here. I can't remember the last time I tuned into an Edmonton radio show. Even for non sporting news. ;) lol
