Some posters - even a hint of negativity or criticism toward a player and they're instantly there defending.
And other posters - never there for the endless positives, but the tiniest perceived mistake/weakness, and they're instantly there criticizing, exaggerating, and disregarding critical information/context, and still going 6 months later. No player in the league has ever been 100% perfect in every single aspect in every single game, and the majority of players were having way bigger issues than "physicality" in their first game back in a totally unique environment after months of not skating. Why exactly are we talking about Marner's least impactful attribute in one game 6 months ago in the first place? Marner wasn't even the problem that game. We should be allowed to enjoy and celebrate our amazing players playing well.

Every media in the country are on the Marner improved stance. He’s having fun and is just back to his normal i would say. Magic is back. Contract years are nutty. Now I don’t think Matthews is having much fun. He needs a couple tonight to cheer himself up ha

Do you think Marner was trying to much at the start of last season to justify his contract?
I think the contract and all the occurrences against him and his family and agent and fans turning on him had a large effect on him mentally. Yes he was really off. This year he’s calm and having fun again. He’s got good veterans around the team now too. I think it’s all good now. Thats a guess right but if I’m right he could very well be right in a scoring title race.

See where he is at when we get to the halfway point of the season. Having fun is the biggest thing and it’s there in his game again. Big year coming for him,i can feel it.

With this year being a 56 game schedule obviously Marner won't match his 94 points he got in the 2018-19 Season. However if he can produce at that pace that would be great to see.

He’s on a 80 pts in 56 games pace right now. I’m not sure he can play more productive but maybe. He’s pacing at 1.43 pts per game. Hard to improve on that.

Marner'll do more than PPG without breaking a sweat, come on now. He's been over PPG the last two seasons, he's nowhere close to the age where he could start to regress and I'm sure he's still learning so his production should be expected to go up, not down. I'd guess he gets at least 70 points, would be sweet if 20 of them were goals (not including EN goals).

Young superstar in the making, set the bar high.

if we could somehow remove Mitch's contract/negotiations from our memories, Mitch would be universally loved by all Leaf fans. Sad reality is, there is a large portion of this fanbase that secretly gets giddy when he fails, because they can fire off their hindsight opinion to anyone within earshot. Support the player, and he will continue to produce, and more importantly might stick around for the rest of his career. Sh!t on him at every chance, he will more than likely hate playing for the Leafs, degrade as a player, and want out. Not saying people cant critique him, but this anticipation of failure, and overall hate is dumb. The guy is a stud, I'm happy he's a leaf. I am hoping he can gain some of his haters back this year. Having the media and fanbase on his side will go a long way with his play

Last season despite Marner missing 11 games because of that high ankle sprain, he finished with a 1.14 PPG in just 59 games played.

Sh!t on him at every chance? WTF?

Marner loves Toronto, most people are fans, for every negative post there are several positive ones and 99% of any "hate" directed at him isn't even at him it's at Dubas because he's the one who handed out the contract, can't fault Marner for letting his agent do his job. As he gets better and better (hopefully he will anyway) and time goes by, the talk about the contract will also fade further into the distance. He also grew up here for crissakes and he knows perfectly well what it's like to play in Toronto, he wanted more than anything to play in his hometown, tons of people worship him and I doubt he's that much of a snowflake that anything posted here (if he even reads it which is doubtful) would have any effect on him, much less make him want out. There's like zero chance of this happening IMHO.

We're also playing in a weak division, which makes it easier for him to put up points. Everything's in place for him to absolutely kill it this season. I don't think it's out of the question that he puts up 75-80 points.

Me personally, I don't care much whether he puts up 55 or 80 points, just show me that you deserve your mega contract in the playoffs where it really counts.

In the 2018 playoffs against Boston the Leafs best player was Marner when he had 9 points in the seven games played. So that's the type of play we need to see from him.

Marner has led the team in scoring 2 of 4 years on the same team as Matthews. Matthews never had to play 4 th line either. Marner was forced to by Babcock. Tied Matthews points per last season actually. Still splitting team scoring records with Matthews over a solid sample size is showing two really good players.
When they are both possibly fighting for the league scoring title it should be fun. There shouldn’t be much hate left for the contract then.
I don’t worry about Marner hate to much but some of it is plain antagonistic.

If Matthews did not miss 20 games in the 2017-18 Season and 14 games in the 2018-19 Season, do you think he finishes ahead of Marner in team scoring?

Although in the 2018-19 Season you need to take into account that John Tavares finished with 88 points and like Marner did he also played in all 82 games that year.

I don’t know. Either one of them can win it any year. Marner is just a point machine. I think he could rattle off more than Matthews. Matthews will be light years ahead in goals so it doesn’t even matter. Perfect match

he has openly admitted that the negotiating process grew harder because of public perception. Combine that, with the plenty of GTA bread players who have openly commented on their lack of interest in playing for the leafs based on the media/fanbase. it is really not out of the realm of possibilities that Mitch’s relationship with the city/team could sour if we as a fanbase can’t get behind the team through the good and bad. Has nothing to do with him being a snowflake. I recognize there is a large portion that get behind Mitch, but his praise is often drowned out by his criticisms. Like it or not, the players do get affected by this

He had to know what public perception would be and TBH, he was a bit of a p..sy for whining about it. I think there's tons of praise and you have no reason to worry. If he plays well, he'll be just fine.

Also ... I think people have forgotten what this town is like when the Leafs win in the playoffs. Trust me, when it happens there's no place like it. I expect we'll have some playoff success soon and when we do, people will forget all about Marner's contract. And if we don't have playoff success with this core in the next 3 years or so well then, might be time to try something else anyway.

And Marner hasn't taken that much heat really anyway, Not sure if you were around when Phaneuf was being hated on here, what people are saying about Marner is nothing compared to that.

Was surprised to see that timely snipe from Marner, courtesy of a perfect pass from Matthews. You would have figured it would be scripted the other way around and maybe what the Flames were thinking too.
