We're 6 games into the season and people in here acting like Marner is leading the league in scoring after 56 games lol.
People seem to have no issue blasting Marner for every perceived mistake, regardless of what game number it is. Why do you take issue with positive comments?
Again, relative to his peers, he has never finished top 10 in scoring. Am I wrong in saying this?
No, but you are wrong for exclusively using that to measure offensive ability. The only reason he hasn't finished top-10 (aside from being injured last year) is because he's gotten significantly less PP time than everybody above him, not because of his individual ability. He was easily a top-10 player in 2018-2019, and this level of production should really not be unexpected, especially as he moves into his prime.

He held out for more money, bent the team over for every penny, and is now paid like a top 5 player in the league, which he isn't. Not even close. He doesn't even give a 100% effort most nights.

Now do you understand?
We are watching two different players maybe you don't understand

He's hardly been noticeable this season and he still leads the league in points

He's going to win an Art Ross at some point in his career

Not when you're making 11 mil.

One thing I've slowly learned in my 51 years is to stop stressing over things you can't control and stop questioning decisions after you've made them and it's too late to change the decision. Forget his salary, what's done is done. Moving forward, I suggest judging the player on his merits.

Leaf fans are so lucky to have so many great young players and we just can't bring ourselves to enjoy the situation.

Weird he? Makes me think some folks must be miserable in their lives.

Marner is currently pacing for 54 goals/109 points over 82.

That’s a pace that is very close to earning his contract.

So kudos kid. If he holds this pace for the rest of the year, the contract fiasco will be forgotten.

There wouldn’t be criticism of these players if they have the goals/points to back up their contracts.

IMO, that isn't the stat line we're really expecting from Marner or what got him the contract in the first place.

He has been the leafs top scorer twice and had the same PPG as Mathews last year, he signed after a season where he scored the most points of any leaf since? 15-20 years._.
Being the third highest paid guy on the team is a bit of a slight to him the only fiasco was Dubs playing favorites.

For the record, among all forwards (500+ min ES, 100+ min PP) since 2018-2019, Marner is...

-9th in ES Points/60
-10th in PP Points/60

The numbers (tiny sample of course) say he is finally earning his massive deal so can't we just enjoy it?:) This is exactly what you hope to see when AM goes down and what justifies carrying their top 4 forwards. Save the bitching for when he falls back to 11th :)

The psychological term is called ingroup-outgroup bias. It used to be that it was limited to one team fans vs another team fans. The deprecation was driven by arbitrary distinctions between the teams. In this age of celebrity, it has morphed into player by player homerism.
Liking x player means disparaging y player.
Criticizing a player is normal to sport but basking in the reflected glory of a singular player relative to another on the same team (in a team sport) is not what being a sports fan is. If degrees were handed out for leaf fandom, I would fail them.

70+ assists and in the 20-ish range of goals over 82.
20 goal/90 point players shouldn't get 11x6 that is front loaded and in signing bonuses at cba limits.

Everybody knew he was a proven 20 goal/90 point player when he signed that contract, but he is still universally considered overpaid by quite literally everyone that follows hockey, other than 2 or 3 posters on hfboards.

So 20 goals/90 points isn't earning his contract. But pacing for 54/109 points is closer to earning his contract. If he keeps putting up such numbers, he'll stop getting so much heat in T.O.

He's not going to continue at a 50+ goal pace because half of those are ENG that will even out over the season.

He could end up with a 100 pt (pace) though, but production, especially in the regular season, isn't what should concern most ppl on here

man, imagine if someone sat outside your office and screamed that you weren't worth your salary. What a preposterous argument to be having. It's not like he's David Clarkson or Dion Phaneuf.
