Most of this process is not really Vesey and his agents fault except for one, this pitch procedure
Making 6-7 teams fly out to Boston to formally present their idea and parade team captains and star power to woo him. Thats the joke of all this.
He should be processing this like any normal UFA on July 1. Take calls, see what they have to offer, make a decision in a couple days if needed.
Others have replied the obvious response that he's not forcing any team to do anything...they're making that choice. But beyond that truth, the other difference between Vesey and "any normal UFA" is $$$$. A typical UFA can virtually eliminate a bunch of offers based on the value of those offers, but Vesey can only choose from offers that have the same dollar amounts. All 30 NHL teams can offer him basically the same contract in terms of value, so these teams have to appeal to him in other ways.
By the way, all the posters calling him a spoiled brat, etc., are clearly people that have never had the luxury of holding leverage in their professional careers. 90% of your professional career your employer is going to hold most of the cards, but in those rare circumstances where you possess some leverage, you'd be a fool not to take advantage of that. What if he's not a bonafide NHL contributor in 3 years? Do you think his NHL team is going to blindly show "loyalty" towards him on his 2nd contract? This is a business transaction, and it works both ways. Whatever club signs him immediately gains all the leverage....they can trade him, bury him in the minors, etc.
Are all the "loyalty" preachers going to come to the defense of the player the next time they get sent down to the AHL on a one way deal? Nope. they'll rejoice in the fact that an underperforming player is getting buried in the minors. It's the GM's right to do so, as per the collectively bargained CBA. Sound familiar?
