Safe to say the "close to home" excuse was BS.

He just didn't want to play for Detroit and was probably trying to let them down easy.

As a Leafs fan that would be happy he signs here I actually hope he signs with Boston.

It's kind of refreshing to see a player who has the ability to live out his dream and play for the team he cheered for growing up.

I'll never understand the crap some spew about a player owing the organization that drafted him (even if he played for them...Parise/Suter)
anything. They owe only to their families and themselves.

As much as I'm not a Bruins fan, I hope he has a decent career, but not against the Leafs, well unless he signs here:laugh:

Sure but then there's guys who goes home and it becomes a true nightmare for them. Ask many players who grew up Habs fans and got to play for them and ended up asking for a trade cause it was destroying them. Cause tons of their fans are morons and will boo you and scream at you in the street when you're having a slump.

Such a transparent lie though.

It's a bad look to say that Detroit is too far from home, then immediately turn around and interview with Chicago, which is considerably farther and in a completely different time zone even.

If it was myself i wouldnt want to sign somewhere that the likely hood of being traded is greater. I'd want to be a part of a core and spend the majority of my career in that organisation.

Lots of turn over on teams that have already established their cores and Vesey could be seen as a stop gap by these teams.

Good post, bolded part the best (in general, not because of Vesey & Boston).

that is one of the dumbest things someone can say. There are 100,000 things you can tell a team. are you saying they are going to say that and not those other 99,999 things?

IF it is TRUE, Chi is out.
IF it is NOT TRUE, and Chi is alive, why the #$%@ would you say that BS excuse and not something else then?

Can ANYONE answer that? It's laughable.

Detroit is too far from home. Chicago is too far from home, but the chance to win a Stanley Cup is worth a meeting at the very least.

Is that so?

Here's a little exercise for you. There was one college-bound forward from Vesey's draft year selected in the 1st round, and he went the full college ride. Convince me he's progressed better than Vesey.

In all fairness, (I won't mention the player) it was a surprise that said player was taken in the 1st round. In 8 games in the AHL, he recorded 6 points (2G, 4A). While he showed little signs of struggling, it's still a small sample size.

You're right though, Jimmy Vesey seems to be the better player.

Food for thought

If you were buying a car, what factors would you use to help make your decision when most of the cars in your price range had very similar in features?

Well id probably buy the car from the dealership that my dad worked at because he'd get me a sweet deal.

LOL

So you're saying that at the time his contract is up he may be able to join a team that is coming out of it's rebuild while getting 2 years to win a Cup instead of two years of basement dwelling? Sounds like a tough choice.

Edit: I bet Schultz never regrets picking an up and coming EDM team over an established contender when he was in this situation.

The issue with that is that he doesn't get to choose that 2nd team. Do you think Saad would have chosen Columbus if he'd had the choice? I mean I'm sure it's a nice place to live, but he's probably not winning a cup there any time soon.

That happens everywhere because most fans are so miserable in their own lives and misery loves company. It's sad, really.:(

It sucks sure, but it's legit. It's really not laughable, it's kind of fine actually. Detroit can absolutely be out because of distance, but Chicago still be in it. The world isn't black and white, and other factors can override those concerns.

Chicago has other things to compensate for that distance that Detroit might not. Things like offering a chance at a Cup. Things like playing with Kane or Toews. Things like a legendary coach. So yeah they're farther, but that can override that issue. Detroit, in his eyes, might not have those things, so the primary reason for not wanting to play for them is being too far from home.

Bu tyea, black and white world. I get it though, he spurned your team. LEt's all hate the guy for making a choice.

You mean Jankowski who was a reach to be drafted that early and a project? But yes compare a project to another prospect 4 years later as if it's somehow relevant.

Agreed. These GMs are pro's. You don't need to let them down easy. Just tell them that you liked their pitch and will think things over. Or if you want to give them an answer immediately, tell them that you're unsure if the fit is there or that you don't see yourself in Detroit. Who cares really what you tell them - as long as it's not something so blatantly false that will make you look silly a couple days later if you sign with a team even further away.

He's the closest comparable in Vesey's draft, which shows exactly how volatile 1st round picks are. There are no guarantees, but Vesey's a 1st round calibre prospect by any measure - if you pick a forward in the 1st round and he's intent on going for the full college ride, you hope he progresses as well as Vesey has.

What's the counter-argument? What more would you expect?

Most of this process is not really Vesey and his agents fault except for one, this pitch procedure

Making 6-7 teams fly out to Boston to formally present their idea and parade team captains and star power to woo him. Thats the joke of all this.

He should be processing this like any normal UFA on July 1. Take calls, see what they have to offer, make a decision in a couple days if needed.
