This is a serious questions. Why is it that so many teams are killing themselves to sign this kid? There has to be some weird competitive GM thing going on here, right? I know in the big picture, it's an asset for free that you didn't have to draft and didn't need to develop, but teams were sending front-office people to watch his beer league games in Foxborough to basically 'send a message'. That's just weird.

In a salary cap world, a low/no risk player who can be very cheap and play a 2/3 line role can be more valuable than a 1st liner making 8 mil.

I just want to see the chain reaction once he sign to a team. I feel like a lot of team are waiting for this signing to make a move.

Gotta agree. The commute difference between Newark/Brooklyn/Manhattan are largely controlled by the daily traffic on whatever choice of transportation you take. Not by the actual miles.

Once you learn to adapt to the NYC metro transportation, it doesn't matter where you live/need to get to.

In reality, where you live is less about the arena and more about the practice facility. NYR is pretty accessible. NYI less so. The Devils practice rink is part of the Prudential Center, so it depends on how appealing you find it going to Newark basically every day.

How does the league Vesey played in compare to the the OHL and Q ? I know people are saying Vesey is a potential 20-25 g 25-30 a player and put up good numbers last year but as a 22/33 year old .
For example Blandisi tore up juniors his last year but was an overage player.Same as Boucher , he broke Stamkos' ' record for single season goals , but did so as an overage player. Both Boucher and blandisi are still developing but even though they dominated their leagues as overage players , are still 3rd line calibre players right now .
I guess what I'm trying to ask is if Vesey played in the CHL last year , what kind of numbers would you say he would have put up ? Is Vesey projected or more skilled than a Boucher or Blandisi? I'm just trying to get a feeling for how good he is.
However Vesey I guess is way bigger and plays C so has more value than those 2 . Just skill wise is he projected to be better?

Vesey is too old for the OHL, so projecting his OHL point totals as a 22-year-old is purely hypothetical and not very meaningful. Division I is a stronger league than the CHL in terms of level of competition, but the players are older, so comparing the two directly is impossible.

He'll almost certainly be a better player than Blandisi. He should be a reliable 40-50-point guy with good possession stats in the NHL, IMO, if all goes well. Not a flashy offensive talent or a superstar, but a player every team likes to have on the roster. (Of course, your opinion of this comparison depends on your opinion of Blandisi's potential.)

I'd have to think that Boston would be a prime destination for him too.

BTW, isn't it nice to try to forget about the fortunes of the various NHL franchises and of anyone or anything but Vesey himself -- who wouldn't want to be Jimmy Vesey tonight?

Here's a 23? y.o. man with good health, a good family, a newly printed Harvard degree, a pro-hockey career ahead of him, multiple multi-million-dollar contract offers and his choice of top-tier pro teams to play for. Who could do anything but be happy for Jimmy Vesey today? His good fortune at this particular moment is almost unique and seemingly well deserved. Happily, it comes to a talented young man who stuck with his studies and actually graduated, and who from every report seems to be a very nice young man.

His hometown could be a wonderful landing place for him too.

Would that our own sons and daughters will have their own extraordinary good fortune as well, each in his or her own way.

Well said, we should all so fortunate.

You did answer your own question: it's an asset for free that you didn't have to draft and didn't need to develop.

Also, he wasn't expected to be this good. Otherwise, he would have been drafted higher and might have been signed earlier.

It's kind of a one-off. The one that slipped between the cracks.

Without a doubt.

What does it have to do with being helpful to the process? It's information and those in the information business are interested in that type of thing. And they are interested in that sort of thing because people crave that sort of information and go on sites like twitter and this one to see that type of thing. The people giving the information could have their own agenda, or maybe they are just returning a favour to a reporter or maybe they just cant keep a secret. What does it matter? It doesn't take a lot of effort and people are interested

Don't understand your point. My speculation is that their is no one in the media (using that term loosely) could know how 7 interviews on a 16 hour business period is going. Yet their are "hundreds" of people referencing sources on how it is going, and ranking ins and outs.

I am watching like everyone (go Sabres) but have no respect for opinions referencing unnamed "sources"

all this specualation is crazy

in history we have seen many cases of guys wanting to play close to home for family reasons

weve seen cases of guys joining a team to be with friends

weve seen guys wanting to avoid the spotlight... and weve seen other guys seeking the spotlight

if we try to make a list of guys we know made decesions based on these factors we would have a few hundred names on the list before we were done

and then we would have 1000s and 1000s of names that never let any of these factors play much of a role in where they ended up

we can all try to appear smart and try to get into this kid's head but theres a fairly decent chance the kid isn't even going to be the one to make the final call. a lot of players have been led by their agents and their other handlers over the years too. I mean even the great bobby orr got tricked into going to Chicago

money wont be the final deciding factor in this decision either because multiple teams will make the same money offer

ultimately Vesey will make a decision... a team will end up with a pretty decent player. they will pay a pretty decent price for him considering hes unproven. the player may ultimately be worth more than the cost of the contract... if so, then bonus. or he may turn into the next Justin Schultz in which case it might come back to bite in the butt to whoever wins this war

I don't blame anyone for hoping for the best... I don't blame anyone for hoping their team gets this 'free' player, but all this 'insider' stuff... or pretending that we know which way this is leaning... its very fake. I don't know why we give it so much play here.

There's a lot of people in this thread that don't follow the Vesey situation but you're the first person who doesn't seem to follow hockey in general.

I don't follow hockey but the Bruins didn't make the playoffs and the isles are coming off back to back 100 point seasons with s 25 year old superstar captain. There's nothing similar about the isles and Boston, and the team closer to average is the Bruins, who are below average. Fact. Hopefully your GM doesn't take another swig and trade away one of your last pieces of relevancy. Ex: Bergeron.

Madison Sq Garden is nowhere near Madison Avenue. It's right over Penn Station.

If you really want to get down in the details, all the biggest banks on Wall St are 15 minutes by taxi or subway from MSG. Barclays is 25 by taxi or subway. Prudential Center is ~30 by taxi and ~40 by PATH train.

Newark is obviously a bit farther, but the other two? It's frankly negligible. As long as you work near some sort of subway in a moderately central part of NY, both Barclays and MSG are within very reasonable commuting times. I doubt that'll be the factor here.

Time to the Arena won't factor in, but to the practice facility could. If he wants to live in NYC I pretty much don't see how the Isles can land him. They practice out in Syosset. If I'm a 23 year old living in Manhattan, there's no way I'm going to want to make that commute. Unless he wants to live in Brooklyn or some crummy neighborhood on the East side, his commute to Westchester or NJ will be much better. My guess though is he'd want to be in the Village, Meatpacking, SoHo, TriBeCa or Chelsea, all of which are a solid 30 minutes closer to the Rangers and Devils training facilities than the Isles.

After some thought I just can't see him coming to Toronto. He has to beat out, Marner, Nylander, JVR and Komarov for top 6 time not too mention he would prob be below guys like Sosh, Hyman and Brown on the depth chart

One things for certain. As soon as he signs, the teams fans that he didn't sign with with start the overrated talk.

He IS overrated. I mean if he hits his peak he might be a 2nd line W, more likely a very good third line W. That doesnt mean I dont want him, I'll be quite pleased if the Leafs sign him. But the commotion he has caused this summer is ridiculous.

Agreed. Your Toronto depth chart and history are too much to overcome for a free agent. My "sources" said he thought Aston Kutcher was coming to the meeting

Hey, we're just watching the NHL version of The Bachelorette here. Letting our imaginations wander. It's a pleasant daydream, so don't go letting reality get in the way, okay!

Of course, none of us have a clue what the star of the show is really thinking, and chances are he's had such a long day that he doesn't know either.

However, that doesn't hamper our speculation or dim our imaginations.

Don't forget to call us for dinner when the show is over.

No, he wouldn't. I actually laughed out when I read that, though, so thanks.

Can't blame the kid for wanting to play at home, I would want the same thing. Hopefully this is all finished by Friday so we can move on to more important topics.

Yeah, it sucks that he didn't want to go outside of his home state. But then again there's downsides to that he'll have to deal with.

As for putting all these teams through it. I'm sure the agent knew that he'd have to go this route if he wanted one of the teams he'd like to play for offer the best deal possible, the Max ELC with Max performance bonuses. If he just came out with his desires from the start. Bruins owner would have surely tried to lowball him a bit.

He's ahead of Komarov...easily. so he would be top 6...JVR/Nylander/Vesey/Marner.

Playing for the Rangers in Manhatten he can see his Harvard buds working on Wall St or Madison Ave, who might even drop by MSG to see some of his games.

Is there a girlfriend involved? Would she like to live near Central Park and go shopping uptown? The kid could probably afford a bit of that.

The Big Apple, you know.
.

His Harvard buddies work in retail on Madison Ave? Uptown has good shopping?

I assume you are not a NYC tour guide?
