wtf? Every team that's making a pitch for him is offering a roster spot. Are the Blackhawks being desperate too?

Hopefully only about 48 more hours of this.

No, not every team is offering a roster spot. In fact I bet none of them are. Because no GM is dumb enough to promise a roster spot to a kid.

'Hey you can play 2nd line LW'
'Cool!'
'Yeah sorry you didnt do well enough were bumping you to 4th or AHL'
'Im not playing anymore'

compared to all the teams not flushing 3rd picks down the toilet by drafting players who never see the NHL? Since the odds are so low of getting a contributing player in the 3rd round, it seems like it would be best to actually hold onto the 3rd round picks and never use them in any way. That way they always hold the hypothetical value of a 3rd round pick.

Yes! Especially when the Sabres had 4 of them this year.

I never said picks do not matter.

In the aggregate, because they fail so often you should get as many as possible to make it more likely you hit with them. A number of teams have had great success with this strategy.

But an individual pick is overvalued here. If you can use it in this way, or at the trade deadline, to roll the dice in a different way then by all means do it.

There are many ways to skin the proverbial cat.

And for this one pick it was not any worse of a roll of the dice and using the pick given that in the past teams have flipped a player who 'wanted to try UFA' doing similar often enough to make the gamble worth it.

:shakehead Huge difference . Buffalo got absolutely nothing for the 3rd besides the opportunity to negotiate a few weeks earlier for a player that flat out said he would not sign until UFA = to me peeing away a pick.
Argument makes no sense logically what so ever about other teams 3rd round picks not panning out makes them worthless .

I am no mathmatic wizard , but a 0% chance of signing or getting a player is not very good odds lol. He very well may end up still signing in Buffalo , but a pick was still wasted as Vesey was going to listen to all interested parties regardless.

The pitch involves the opportunity to play in that top 6, or top 9 role, with everything aligning that's where you'll begin on the roster. The pitch was never, from any team, (including Buffalo), we promise 2nd line for you all season.

Sweeney: "Hey Jimmy, are you ready to join a solid winning tradition?"

Vesey: "Didnt you guys miss the playoff the last two years?"

Sweeney: "Yes, but we take care of our players financially and are on the uptick!"

Vesey: "Didnt you trade Hamilton because of money and isnt Chara going to be 40 this season?"

Sweeney: "Uh... Cam, help me out here?"

Neely: "ARGHHHHHH! POWER FORWARD HOCKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HIT SOMEBODY!!!!!!!"

Vesey: "..."

Sweeney: "Thanks for your time Jimmy. Good luck"

I'll bet Vesey asked if he could have that clause put in his contract

For the umpteenth million time, Buffalo had 4 third round picks. All this angst over using one of them to pitch to Vesey early is mind-boggling to me.

It's no different than the hundreds of instances a team gave up picks or prospects at the deadline for a rental only to be eliminated early in the playoffs.

Look at the Rangers giving up 2 2nds and our 3rd best prospect for a clearly over the hill Eric Staal that we clearly didn't need and clearly wasn't putting us over the top or solving the multitude of issues that were apparent since mid December.

Now that is getting absolutely nothing for picks and throwing them down the drain.

Bruins offered Hamilton the same contract that Calgary gave him. Hamilton refused to sign in Boston.

Except that Hamilton wasn't traded because of money. Nice try though.

They missed by 1 point both years. They have a better core, coaching and pipeline than teams like NYR,
and they didn't trade Hamilton because of money. If you had any knowledge of the situation, you would know that they offered Dougie a comparable deal to the one he signed in CAL. The player did not want to be here. Get outta here with that backwards ass logic. Learn some facts my boy.

Edit: also as far as "winning tradition" goes, we have the 2nd most cups of ALL American hockey clubs. Tradition generally goes longer than 2 years bud...:shakehead

1) It was a relatively expendable pick, as third-rounders go. Sabres had four third-round picks this year. Giving up one of four is not a huge deal.

2) Even though Vesey ultimately went to UFA, that doesn't mean the pick was wasted for nothing. It was a calculated risk, and gave Murray a couple month of exclusivity to make his pitch over the course of several meetings, whereas every other team this week has a couple hours maybe to make a pitch and try to rise above all the other suitors lining up at the same time. Sure Murray could have kept his pick and waiting till Aug. 15th to make a pitch like everyone else, but maybe Vesey wouldn't have been receptive to Buffalo. Maybe trading the pick and getting the exclusive negotiating window increased his odds and bought a spot on Vesey's shortlist. Doesn't mean he'll ultimately pick Buffalo, but doesn't mean it was a wasted pick if he doesn't.

lol, i mean, Boston is an original 6 team so yea they should be ahead of most, if not all expansion teams

and the only original 6 team they have beat in cups is NYR

Very interesting that the NYC Metro clubs are involved.

First off, unlike what was reported, the Rangers are the quickest way home to Boston.

Lived in NYC, Boston, and Fairfield, CT... went to Boston College....and worked on the Island.

No hockey player would worry about traffic times over these three teams..though living on the upper west side of Manhattan, where many Rangers live, makes a slight difference.

Homeboys in Boston feel the wrath when things aren't going well.

As a young man, NYC is a far, far, far better city than Boston in every way.

Four years experience with a best friend from County Down, Ireland...NY wins in every way...

Per Brian Leetch...when the kids get older, things change...

Just leave it alone. You can't talk sense to people that value a 3rd round pick that highly, especially when you have 4 of them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKZJdaiJF84

No where did I comment on the value of a third round pick.
I just said that Buffalo flushed it down the toilet.
I don't care if they had all 30 3rd round picks, just saying they wasted it.
And yes teams give away picks all the time on gambles like deadline rental players , BUT at least they get the services of said player for a time being.
I dunno , maybe it's just me but when a player or his agent comes out and says that they will NOT sign until he hits UFA , and a team goes out and uses a pick anyways to acquire his rights before he is a UFA .... Call me crazy but that is wasting a pick.

Maybe the word "waste" gets fans butt hurt , let's say Buffalo "spent" a draft pick for no reason apparent reason.
Not sure what there is to argue here .
Player -" I will not sign until I'm a UFA"
Team - " here is a draft pick to acquire players rights before he is a UFA

Disagree on so many levels. This really comes down to the individual and what type of life they prefer. Some hate large cities. This comes from a guy who trains consultants for a living who have the option of going to Boston or NY. These are recent college grads that hate the idea of living in such a large city as NY.
