the MLB does it right and the NHL has it wrong. Quit allowing teams to hold rights to players who are in college. If a player states he is going to college, said player does not get drafted.

That is not how the MLB draft works. players 18 do not leave the draft. what happens is player gets drafter and they may have a scholarship to a school. team offers them money then player decides.

MLB team loses their rights and the players reenter the draft in their junior year.

As far as I know the team drafting a player who goes to college do not get a comp pick in a later draft....so they blow a 1st on nothing.

The difference is that MLB has an elaborate deep minor league farm system. So going to college does nothing to boost a prospect.

For the NHL, NFL, and NBA, college is sort of like a de facto minor league, so it makes sense that teams keep their rights because many of those players fit right into the NHL and don't even go to the AHL.

To add on this....NBA and NFL --it is a minor league system.

For MLB players generally it doesnt matter much either way similar to hockey. Some players bust and some players value increases.

MLB teams having at least 4 minor league teams has a long draft so one pick doesnt make or break a team. IF you notice teams generally dont rely on a high 1st round pick as you see in the other three sports. in basbal 1st round picks even high ones are so hit and miss.

Sure---you could have a draft where players declare if they want to be eligible at 18. IF not they go to college on scholarship then the NHL will then have college players drafted like baseball after their junior year (or when the are 21--like how they are 8 in the draft now) then have their rights for 2 years. Thus that kills the college UFA track unless the player defereed to a latter college entry.

Toronto, Chicago and Boston have great suburbs as well as an awesome area around the home arena.

Agreed. There is area downtown that is affordable, but obviously for the money he's making, he'll be able to choose where ever he wants to live.

At his age, he likely wants to live close to the arena and have access to a metropolitan city without having to drive two hours in traffic or take grimy public transportation.

I can name a couple cities speculated in this thread that don't meet the criteria.

Alright I have to ask...and I'm honestly not trying to be rude.

But what's the draw to New Jersey?

1. Not a great city.
2. Could easily have the worst defense in the league.
3. Nothing special in terms of offensive linemates or young core.

To me it has minimal draw.

And also wondering if there's any reliable insiders who seriously think new Jersey is a potential spot? How did new Jersey get in the picture in the last month anyways? They were never an original potential landing spot...

Thanks!

Obviously Newark sucks but they don't live there, look at the Bronx with the Yankees. Garbage city but no one cares.

New Jersey has it all

Amazing beaches and shore towns
Mountains
Fishing, hiking, camping, sight seeing areas everywhere you look
New York City and Philly in driving distance
Atlantic City if you want to gamble
Four distinct seasons
Music venues everywhere
15 pro sport teams in driving distance if you want to catch a game
Any kind of world class food you want due to the diversity
And contrary to belief New Jersey is a freaking beautiful state

As for hockey related items
Least amount of travel
Out of the spotlight
Top notch practice facility and its in the same building as the arena
As for Vesey he is relatively close to home
Most young players live in the fun and nice areas in Hoboken and Jersey City. The older guys have huge mansions in quiet suburban areas.

And no Aethon, didn't catch anything today. :(

New Jersey City

there have been multiple insiders speculating about NJ. One of them was Dreger, I think he's just a little reliable.

Aside from the team itself, our assistant GM Fitzgerald knows the Veseys very well apparently. We also drafted and currently own the draft rights to Vesey's college roommate (and linemate) Alex Kerfoot, so I imagine NJ has come up a few times and he may have met the staff while they were there scouting/meeting with Kerfoot.

but in terms of NJ itself? it has some of the richest suburbs in the country and for those not ready to settle down, you can even live in NYC if you want. Most of the young unmarried guys (Henrique, Palmieri.. I think Hall too pretty soon) live in Hoboken, which is a stone's throw from the city and is a pretty nice area itself as well.

Newark sucks but he doesn't have to live there and the area around the arena is perfectly safe.

I can't wait for tomorrow when all the speculation about who he'll talk with disappears.

We'll still be speculating about who he ends up with, but we're getting close.

To be fair, Jersey City is right next to Hoboken, so he wasn't completely wrong lol.

Nobody cares because they're the New York Yankees and the greatest professional sports team on the continent.

The NJ Devils comparable is the Brooklyn Nets.

Is it bad that I kind of hope this hype leads to an embarrassing year for Vesey? Just for the entertainment value alone.

He's got more hype around him than some blue chip prospects but does he really deserve it? I guess we shall see.

The players, the players don't care they play in the Bronx because they don't live or hang out there just like the Devil players don't care they play in Newark because they also do not live or hang out there.

Just like the Mets players don't care that they play in a lousy part of Queens and just like the Philly players don't care that they play on the outskirts of Philly in an old industrial area.

God, I hope the Devils sign him just to see the reactions from some people with an apparent superiority complex.

what a thinly veiled trolling attempt

1. New Jersey is not a city. of course Newark isn't a great city, so what? New Jersey has some of the richest suburbs in the country plus Hoboken and NYC are a 10 minute train ride away

2. How much do you want to bet that the Devils will be in the top half to one-third of the league in shots allowed and goals allowed? I don't think you watch the Devils much...

3. Taylor Hall? Adam Henrique? Kyle Palmieri? Mike Cammalleri? guys like Zacha, Mcleod, Santini on the way? the Devils system is probably in the middle of the pack in the NHL now. Shero has completely rebuilt the franchise's young nucleus of prospects in about 18 months.

Darren Dreger said today that NJ is one of the favorites. you might have heard of him?
