I can understand that, and obviously if there is a trade out there for him we have to consider. But at the same, if he can finally figure out how to play on the wing we are likely better off keeping him and just trade guys like Beleskey for future considerations.

Yeah I guess the only issue with him is that his stats are okay enough that he's likely to get a healthy raise. I definitely don't want to be paying him $3-4M a year as I don't think he's a very good hockey player. So while I might prefer him to a guy like Beleskey being that we do need skill, skill guys cost. And thus I'd prefer they reliably produce or otherwise be effective players, and he is neither.

Seidenberg has looked good in the WCOH and now the Islanders.

But Sweeney doesn't have a crystal ball, and no one predicted Seidenberg having a bounce back season. Maybe it took him longer than people thought to get over that bad knee injury. Seidenberg looked done last year, and I'd wager if it hadn't been for the opportunity to showcase himself at the WCOH, he's probably never offered a contract.

Or... maybe it's the system. And Seindenberg today playing in Brooklyn would look different than the Seidenberg playing in Boston today, or last year, etc.

What were Boychuk's stats his last year in BOS compared to his first year for NYI?

Did the player change overnight. No, not really. What did change is the coach, his role (more minutes?) and a different system.

Maybe it's not just players on offense that at times have shown a new lease on life when they leave Claude's reach.

I would guess Spooner gets moved and Krug does not. I would move both for Trouba. I think they view Krug as a core piece in locker-room and he can be dynamic on the ice. He hasn't been that good for awhile now since his shoulder injury despite his assist totals last year. I would worry about his durability going forward.

I don't think Krug is overpaid. He's an offensive d-man that can play Top 4 and will give you 40+ points a year.

"Great" D-men cost a lot more than Krug. Please don't give me the Carlson and Fowler type contract examples, because those guys signed those deals before they were proven. Their next deals will be more.

Sorry man, Krug in this league is not a top four guy on a winning team. He is a 25 million dollar PP specialist and that's it. You trade for Trouba, with Carlo and Colin Miller who is playing better everyday, you are on track. Three D all under 24 and add in Morrow...done.

I'd honestly rather trade for Brodin than Trouba at this point, i think... unless the asking price for Trouba goes down significantly.

With the exception of St.Louis and maaaybe Anaheim...I'm just curious, which other team wouldn't consider him as a top 4 dman?

Nashville, San Jose, Tampa Bay, Florida, Minnesota, Carolina, Winnipeg, Washington, maybe Pitt

So if I rank the top 4 dmen for those teams; you wouldn't take Krug over the follwing:

TB: Hedman, Stralman, Garrison, Coburn
Nashville: Subban, Josi, Ekholm, Ellis
Pittsburgh: Letang, Maatta, Daley, Dumoulin
SJ: Martin, Burns, Vlasic, Braun
Florida: Yandle, Demers, Ekblad and Matheson
Minnesota: Suter, Dumba, Brodin, Spurgeon
Carolina: Hainsey, Faulk, Hanifin, Murphy
Winnipeg: Myers, Buff, Trouba, Enstrom
Washington: Alzner Carlson, Niskanen and Oprik

While the above list is based on my own opinion, with the exception of WSH and maybe SJ, there probably is about 4 teams that wouldn't play Krug in there top 4. However I still see more then 80% playing him top 4 minutes.

He hasn't shown that he's below a lot of the guys in bold IMO.

so the exceptions are now up to 8 teams and I forgot to include LA and Calgary. In a vacuum with no contract and role considerations, I would take Krug over Coburn, Murphy and Orpik.

He's not good defensively. His best role is 3rd pairing offensive specialist

I see very little upside in Brodin -- he is what he is; a reliable top 4 D, but he's never going to be a legit NHL #1 or #2 D.

Both Trouba and Brodin are going to be costly, but at least Trouba has a lot more upside.

Are you suggesting you were against buying out Seidenberg this past offseason?

I was against it BUT then I thought it meant we were spending that money on someone else

A buyout that effects us for 4 seasons on top of unused cap room is what bothers me.

I'm also in the camp that feels liles is fairly useless so that compounds my unhappiness

But seidenberg was a warrior for us... I'm happy to see him bounce back

Very few teams are happy paying a bottom 3 down 5 mill. And then the question becomes are we happy using krug in our top 3

I know we are using him in top 3 but is our defense a strength? Or do we have a hole in our top 3?

I think we should trade krug if other gms still think hes worth the contract. Otherwise I see krug being like Brian Campbell. It takes a lot of points to make a guy like this an asset. And scoring slumps absolutely kill you.

Personally I think krug is trying to live up to his contract and it's hurting his offense. He should never have been paid this type of money. When he's scoring he can really help a pp. Should have been bridged like pk subban and if we lose him as Ufa we live with it

Conversely, Seidenberg was a nobody before Claude.

They did, that's why he made only 3.4 on a 1 year deal. Came back and played in the top 4 and played well and earned his new contract. Losing him as a UFA would be the worst move Sweeney would have made to date.

Why is it no one calls Kevin Shattenkirk a PP specialist. Unlike Krug, he actually gets more than 50% of his points from the PP (54% career, 59% last season). Shattenkirk had more goals scored 5 on 5 while he was on the ice in 9 less games and as a team the Blue allowed 29 less goals.

If Krug was 6'0'' and nothing else about his game changed, people wouldn't be calling him a PP specialist.

Exactly.

But I can tell you this much about Krug.

If he was as bad defensively as some on this board make him out to be, there isn't a chance in hell under a coach like Julien that Krug gets 20 mins a game if he was just a PP specialist D-man.

We also have to remember who he's playing with. Look at how much better Chara looks with Carlo as opposed to K. Miller/McQ. Those are the main partners Krug has had the last few years. I think Krug is an excellent bottom pairing guy. I'm not totally convinced he can be a top 4 on a CHAMPIONSHIP team. But I hope he proves me wrong.

With a couple of the jets forwards hurt does this make them move trouba quicker at all? No ones gonna take em if they get too close to dec 1

I honestly don't trade Spooner for Trouba at this point. I think we need to keep what youth we have. I would consider Krejci but I don't think that would interest them. Krejci for Trouba makes sense now that we have Backes signed and he is around the same age as Krejci.

Also for those on here hoping for Boone Jenner, that team needs a center man. I would do Spooner for Jenner or Krejci for Jenner at this point if we are not moving one of them for a d man.

exactly... size matters. you have to be exceptional to overcome size. even then size is still a handicap. but yes if krug was 6 feet hed be a very good top 3 dman

Forget Trouba forget Fowler,, I'm just hoping Sweeney can nab a below the radar dman similar to Chiarelli when he pulled Seidenberg out of Florida. Swing a deal with Benning, Vancouver has some dmen who they're down on lately.

Unless there is an injury makes no sense to trade for a D unless it's a steal

Chara with no power play time has been very good - Carlo looks that 15 year top 4 rock. Krug's a second pair and rounding in to shape and the prospects overall get better

they got multiple left shot D drafted in high rounds they really only need to hit on 1. The odds are stacked in their favor. Thanks Don:handclap:

I'm not convinced that any of those guys will become legit #1 pairing guys. I don't see any of those guys becoming Keith, Vlasic, Hjalmarsson, etc. If we can get a top guy like that via trade, I'd be all over it. Especially if they are LH. I really think we have the RH guys for the future already in the organization.
