Pretty much. I like Krug but have long felt that his ideal situation is as a third-pairing LHD and power play specialist. His contract will, however, become problematic if his current play and lack of production continue, and that is the last thing that Boston needs.

I'm starting to have my doubts about him being a PP specialist. IMO, he is a detriment to our PP. He's a "gunner who can't hit the target". I have respect for anyone who plays this game at every level but I also have my opinions of how well they play it.

He sucks at slapshots and one-timers and that is all he seems to shoot...

getting icetime and doing the job at a level that is playoff worthy are not always the same thing

we missed the playoffs 2 years in a row... theres spots in our lineup that need improving

a huge reason we missed the playoffs is chara played hurt... injuries are a part of the game. when top guys go down other guys are required to step up. playoff teams have guys that can step up

we don't

krug is a bottom pairing guy who has been asked to step up into a 3-4 roll. I give him props for that. asking him to be a 3-4 guy that can step up into a first pair guy is formula for disaster.

much like Andrew ference... was a 5-6 guy who we asked to step up into a 3-4 roll and he did it for us.

not like johnny boychuk or dennis Seidenberg who were legitimate 3-4 guys and we could ask them to step up to a top pair.

it takes 6 dmen to put together an nhl roster and krug clearly brings some strengths to the table. he can generate offense when he isn't being overwhelmed with defensive assignments beyond his capability. sadly it kills the cap to pay a pp specialist 5 million dollars.

we are stuck with this guy now... so we should bite the bullet on him and forget about this experiment to play him 21-22 mins a game. knock his icetime back to 16 mins... give him easy zone starts... play him with our scoring lines... let him focus on the pp...

once he has his scoring touch back we can shop him but for now I wouldn't take him on waivers with that contract and what weve seen the past 20 games.

I agree that just because Krug is forced into a top 4 role, doesn't mean he automatically has achieved that standard.

But I really think he did last year -- he took on a lot of responsibility and TOI last season, and performed very well. I think he's getting unfairly tarred this season due to a slow start, which I think is very much related to his still recovering from shoulder surgery. I think it takes a lot of time to rebuild strength and confidence after a significant procedure like that.

Last season, among D playing at least 750 minutes, Krug had the 2nd best CF% at 51.2, just after Liles. By contrast, Chara was 49.6, Kevan was 49.8, McQuaid 48.8.

See: http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/rat...ense&minutes=750&disp=1&sort=PCT&sortdir=DESC

He also did this while carrying McQuaid (his main partner). Together on ice, they had a CF% of 50.7. Yet, when apart, Krug's CF% improved to 51.5 while McQuaid, when apart from Krug, dropped significantly to 46.2.

In other words, he made McQuaid a lot better when they were on the ice together.

Krug also did not play sheltered minutes, with a largely even split between Ozone/Dzone/Nzone. He also played the 2nd most TOI after Chara.

He'll be much better when his shoulder returns the strength AND and no longer has to actually play with McQuaid, who has no business as a 2nd pairing D.

This combo of Spooner and Backes on the 1st unit isn't working.

They basically took one of Spooner's best two passing options away from him.

Now it's a PP focused on point shots and Backes standing in front for the screen/deflection.

They've effectively neutured Spooner on the PP, where he is most effective, some would say the only place he is effective.

Bang on -- why the hell did they change our approach to the PP?

The dump-chase-cycle-shot-from-point approach is static, predictable, and has been shown to be very ineffective for the Bs, yet we continue to return to it.

We abandoned it for a while when CJ began limiting Chara's minutes-- it was no longer wise to play him also on the PP just to park him in front of the net. Now, it seems we've acquired Backes and asked him to return to that same role.

Dumb.

You used a good word here.....static.

Last year with the same unit except Eriksson instead of Backes, was hard to handle because it gave you different looks, and all 5 players with possibly the exception of Bergeron in that bumper position, we're always moving.

Now the constant movement is gone, and it's just back-and-forth between Krejci and Krug at the points, praying for a deflection, tip-in, or rebound opportunity.

Like you said, predictable.

You'll have to ask the Joe "The Genius" Sacco why they have done what they have done, I can't understand their thought process with regards to the PP set-up, personnel, or usage (the 2nd unit is outperforming the 1st yet they always get the final 1/3 of the PP). anymore.

And you're very right about Loui's role -- so important to add to unpredictability to last year's set up.

Unreal -- re Sacco. Honestly don't have a clue either what he/B's thinking.

I agree that Krug performed as a quality top 4 guy last season on both ends of the ice. He will never be good one on one, but his ability to clear the zone mitigates that. He has not been producing so far this season, though. He is getting lots of shots that are not going in, and he isn't preventing shots as well as last season. While I think patience with his injury is warranted, the team also can't afford to be patient anymore with Chara out and the Bruins best offensive players all struggling. I'd love to see him with a quality partner for once.

Who here thinks a small D can see the net with 2 200lbs Ds and a Backes in front of it?

This team needs players who go in towards the goal then back out. Stationary player in front of the goal doesn't get you any.

I mean, the net doesn't really move. I don't see how someones height really effects it either since not even Chara would be looking over, if anything Krug being lower to the ice helps him see under players and can see the goalies positioning.

if i had trouba id feel insulted by that offer

Trouba to me won't be hitting his stride/projection. He is rather meh to me. All is needed is for a team to acquire him pay him more money to have their fan base up in arms or their heads in the sand.

People are already wanting to claim money back from Krug.

They're paying him to do that. He's a T-36 in the NHL amongst defensemen in cap hit. Which makes him a low end #1/high end #2.
And the results have been...two missed play-offs. I hope and pray he proves me wrong, but so far, everything has pointed to it not being the case. As I said, I like Krug. I'm a big supporter. I think the team has overvalued his production and frankly put him in a bad spot. He took less money initially when the cap was an issue, which was great, but they overpaid him to compensate for it. With a lot of young guys expected to play and Chara's money coming off, they're probably ok going forward and it likely won't kill them, but the FO has a very tough time correctly valuing players.

Salary evaluation and their pro-scouting staff stinks.

Then they geniunously provide the same structure on PP unit 2 with Zero effect Hayes in front of the net
:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh: It's laughable. Is it Sweeney telling Claude to play him OR is it Claude thinking that he can make Hayes an actual NHL player? Either way there's a ridiculous disconnect/inability to think ratioanally in the Bruins front office. How hard is this? Hayes sucks. PERIOD! Krug is not worth what they pay him. He was a PP specialist (still wasn't worth the $$$). Now that he has no slapshot or a decent wrist shot he's useless as **** on a bull.

Joe Sad Sack... Does he have narcolepsy because he always looks half asleep (and that's being generous). Is he a friend of Cam Neely's because I don't see what he brings to the table?
