1. He never won a cup for Ottawa
2."I'm not worried about my legacy"

Doesn't deserve to have his number retired imo.

Not caring about your legacy seems more like a redeeming quality rather than something bad. The guy stopped getting a paycheck and even gave money back for deadline deals for chrissakes. Eric Lindros is a guy who cares about his legacy I bet.

How many players have their numbers retired and haven't won a cup?

Briere by Pittsburgh due to a car accident death.

Many others?

I recall researching this at one point, but, I'm pretty sure that there is no retired player out there that has

a) scored as many points as Alfie did for one franchise

or

b) been captain as long as Alfie did for one franchise

and not had their number retired* by that franchise. For those that do not want to retire the number due to anger over how he left, you are essentially proposing to become the most restrictive franchise on this front.

What we had with Alfie is pretty special and rare. It would have been nice if it ended differently, but, it doesn't erase what he accomplished.

*or honored, for teams that do not formally retire numbers like the Leafs

I was listening to the TSN1200, according to Dreger, the Sens will have a big role in the announcement as well as Daniel's future.

I imagine this probably means a one-day contract and him rejoining the team to work in the front office.

If Melynk and Murray and Alfredsson can bury the hatchet, so can all of we.

adopt the Leafs way of honoring players without retiring their numbers.

he had a great career with us and I wish when he announces his retirement that the team can be involved in some way; but if he goes quietly it doesn't take away from all he's done for our franchise

This was interesting, so I looked into it. There are many orgs that have won cups (but not with the player whose jersey was retired). Seeing as Alfredsson is the only guy I'd do this for in the past 21 years, I feel comfortable adding his name.

Absolutley not, the Leafs honoured numbers are a mess. Too many honourees, devalues the ceremony

Back in the 90s a player left Vancouver under less than ideal terms leaving the fans with a sour taste in their mouth. This player was easily a favourite in the city regardless if you were a Canucks fan or not. He was the best player they had drafted and was the most exciting to watch. His number 10 hangs in the rafters as of last year.

Need I say more?
Hockey is a business. Everyone has needs. As much as it hurt at the time I think we need to move on and start remembering all the good Alfie did for us. I say retire his number and bring him back in some way.

Lots of players have scored more points than Alfie for one franchise, including Sakic, Yzerman, Dionne, Lemieux, Howe, Bourque, Mikita, Perrault, and Beliveau.

And many players have captained their team for longer than Alfie, such as Howe, Sakic, Yzerman etc.

So by that logic, we should never retire any numbers until we win a cup, even if a player is by far the best player that ever played for the team.

By that logic and the fact that he did not play out his career here, yes.

I would make an exception if he didn't leave without a care in the world for the fans.

Okay buddy, I see you're still emotionally hurt by his decision, time to let go.

1) Little more on Daniel Alfredsson: hearing he would like retirement announcement to happen as soon as Monday when Senators are in DET...
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
2) But there is possibility of a larger send-off in Ottawa. After all, it is fitting that's where on-ice portion of his career ends. (END)

I'll be at that game, kind of cool to be there for that if true.

Ottawa unless it becomes a disaster
I'm guessing he stays in Detroit and goes directly to a position in their front office.

Sad to see him finally retire. Wish it could have been in a Sens jersey. I wouldn't retire his number, but understand why the Sens probably will.

One day contract please.

So much this. It would mean so much to me as a fan, and I'm sure many/most of you guys.

Time heals all wounds. If alfie didn't leave, maybe we wouldn't have bobby. It's amazing how some decisions affect life so much down the road. Decisions and repercussions.

I hope he takes a spot in management, but I'm not sure he is the type. We'll see. His presence would be invaluable, especially to our young captain.

This is a man who should be celebrated on a level that no other Senator has or can be. I'm looking forward to his eventual jersey retirement and hopefully, his HHOF induction.

Alfie Alfie Alfie.
