Speculation is he wants to go in the HOF as a Red Wing. If that's the case, mark me down as to NOT retire his number. That should be cleared up by Alfie, first.
Who's speculating this? That'd be shocking

In the end what did Alfredsson accomplish by leaving us? Nothing. I'm still bitter.

No one... We havent had that player yet. If he didnt leave then i would ahve said yes (even though he has zero cups to his name, and i have an issue with putting losers in the rafters) but i understand he was a big part of this team for a long time.
I've been a Sens fan since the beginning. Alfredsson was always one of my favourite players.
He will have his jersey in the rafters and I hope he comes back to the organization at some point.
Still will never be the same though if he had stayed in Ottawa the whole time.
You remind me so much of a poster, John Holmes who never forgave Alfredsson for displacing his favourite player Alexei Yashin as captain and used to write exactly this sort of post.
Better off resenting the owner.
I might be wrong. But all those players are winners. Alfie is a perennial loser. If you could read you would realise you jut made an argument against yourself. Ask yourself what all those players have in common. I'll give you a minute...
...All of their numbers have been retired by their respective teams.
Back in the 90s a player left Vancouver under less than ideal terms leaving the fans with a sour taste in their mouth. This player was easily a favourite in the city regardless if you were a Canucks fan or not. He was the best player they had drafted and was the most exciting to watch. His number 10 hangs in the rafters as of last year.
Need I say more?
Hockey is a business. Everyone has needs. As much as it hurt at the time I think we need to move on and start remembering all the good Alfie did for us. I say retire his number and bring him back in some way.

The likelihood of the Sens signing Alfredsson so he finishes his career with the Sens?
Probably not!
Without NHL / NHL PA exemptions, the minimum contract being what it is Melnyk isn't in the habit of throwing free money around plus they don't have room on their 23 man roster to sign a UFA even if it's just for a day.
Nice touchy feel idea. Too bad!
Sign Alfie to a two way with AHL league minimum for his AHL salary(42,375), waive Alfie after that one game, after he clears he can announce retirement wouldn't cost much at all.
What a pathetic way to end your career. Spurn the team and city that made you to play for a crappy Detroit team...then not know when to quit.
Why is #8 retired anyways? Never got that.
sens were worse than Detroit last year
I'm both surprised that there are so many fans who still hold grudges against Alfie, and yet not at all surprised that I find them here.
No grudge here. Ive never believed he should have his number retired. I think that should be reserved for truly once in a lifetime players. All for honouring his number like Toronto does.
And it is a pathetic way to end a career. No way around it.
