Not accounting for games played Lafreniere is tied for 57th in the league in even strength points. There are 32 teams in the league. There are 3 players on the #1 line. He's firmly a top line player 5 on 5. BTW, Kreider is tied with him. So Kreider is not a bad player even strength either in terms of pure production. Zib has 6 fewer even strength points and Trochek has 5 more. Overall Laf would probably be a 70-75 point player playing on the top PP unit. I'm sure pre-draft expectations were more Panarin like numbers but he's still 22 years old. I don't know why people think that just because he's a first overall he can't have a development arc of a mid-first round player. Why does he have to be superstar year one or he'll never be one. Just because he's a #1 overall?

I know he's younger so not apples to apples but the main board's obsession with hating Lafreniere because the juggernaut Rangers should never have gotten him was on display when Slafkovsky destroyed him in a poll. For comparison he has 21 points on even strength. He also doesn't play with Panarin. I get it. But I believe he's on Montreal's top line. He destroyed Laf in the poll. What a joke.

Purposely not including the name but this is the f***ing garbage we get from fans on the main board. In a game where the Rangers scored 3 goals and Lafreniere had a goal and two primary assists we get this bullshit on the main boards.

Or just trade Shesterkin.
The problem with that is timing. Shesty has 1 year remaining on his contract and he's a UFA at the end of it. Teams don't trade their starting goalies mid-season unless they are out of it or there are extenuating circumstances (the player wants out, for example). There's no reason to think that the Rangers will drop off next season, so the only realistic opportunity to trade Shesty would be this summer.

If we were to trade him this summer, who would replace him? Garand is progressing, but he's absolutely not ready to handle #1 goalie duties in the NHL. The only other goalie we have signed for next year is Boyko, who is still trying to work his way up to AHL playing time.

We'd be forced to sign or trade a goalie. The UFA list isn't all that exciting. Maybe there's a guy on that list who we could sign, Samsonov or Nedeljkovic perhaps, who Benny can work his magic on, but that's not a gamble worth taking IMO.

I know people are thinking Shesty will get 10 mil, but I think the league has come back to reality on goalie compensation. Hellebuyck got 8.5 mil. Sorokin got 8.25 mil. No other goalie has gotten more than 6 mil in the last 3 years. Shesty had that one awesome year, but last year and this year have not been up to that standard. He'll probably get something around what Sorokin got.

We need to structure Shesty's contract such that he can be traded at some point. Let Garand play another full year in the AHL as the #1 goalie, then let him be the backup for a year or two and see where it goes. If he shows that he can be a #1, then we can trade Shesty.

I agree, I don't think Igor is going to get anything outrageous. The cap should be at 90 million soon, if he gets somewhere around 8 million a year that's plenty manageable

Drury will need to find space to pay both Shesterkin and Lafreniere big contracts for 25-26.

Cap increases take care of this pretty handily. Should be at 92M with several big names coming off the books in 26-27. We’ll be able to move on from one of them.

I wish Laf would get with Kakko. Maybe tell him hey look last season I kind of sucked. Now this season I feel like I can play with anyone. If I can do it you can do it. Maybe try to get KK in that kind of mindset. Even though KK is known for liking to cycle a big difference I see in the 2 this season is that Laf is physically stronger.
