Damn

I know I'm the right amount of crazy when I've been thinking for 2 weeks I want Laffy on PP1 over Mika and there we are, HF all on the same page of crazy. Don't seem so crazy to me!
Not crazy at all, it’s one of the most clear cut easy ways to improve their cup chances that they won’t do because optics/nepotism

I don’t think it was optics.
Mika was producing on the pp.
i get that he wasn’t productive at 5v5.
But taking away the thing he’s productive at, to positively impact his overall game seems counterintuitive.

Since the first half of the season PP1 dropped off considerably in both generation and success rate. I think Lafreniere instantly improves both of these things, how is that counterintuitive to insert him

Right there with ya bud. Said same over a month ago and got the "PP1 is a sacred cow" treatment and the "but Mika's 20 PPGs last year!" treatment and a litany of how Panarin wouldn't be good in the Mika spot even though he's played there before and been elite.

Still wanna see it.

I mean what is Zibanejad even doing to help PP1 right now. He’s pretty much an automatic turnover on any entry attempt and is constantly making poor reads and passes leading to clears. His one timer is awesome but they aren’t getting him any quality looks because the point-> half wall one timer is obsolete and their seam passing is nonexistent. And obviously he hasn’t looked for a wrist shot since 2019 so if they’re not setting him up he’s pointless

I can’t think of any reason why Laf wouldn’t help this unit. Not only is he destroying Zib in basic point production at 5v5 as well as every analytic and tracked stat such as zone entries and high danger passing, but he’s also left handed which would put Panarin back in his natural spot where we can get some seam passing going.

what’s so frustrating is it feels like his development was completley stalled for 2 years. he’s like 2 years behind where he should be. I hope it’s not too late.
How dare he not be the most dominant 20 year old player in the league. I made this point some time ago but he's improved his total point output by almost 10 points each season. At his current pace, he is going to have a 93 point season as a 26 y.o and a 145 point season as a 31 year old. You can't argue with the data! :naughty:

what I mean is quinn and gallant basically halted his development and he wasted 3 good years. had lav been the coach from the get go, I think he’d be in a much better place.

I don't even completely disagree with this, but the Mika thing has been pretty damning on himself. Long time to be ineffective anywhere but the PP especially while you got this kid knocking on the door. It would be a tough pill to swallow for Mika, but the hope is he would respond to taking his 5v5 time and producing more.

Pressure does produce diamonds after all. This isn't an anti-Mika thing, it's Pro-Laf. My dog is named after Mika haha. Love the guy but it's a huge step backwards for him this year.

It is a huge step back for him, but he’s looked alot better after the deadline.

It doesn’t even need to be a permanent demotion. All I ask is they TRY other logical looks for their power play and see what they have. The ol’ reliable unit has sucked against PHI/CAR this year and those are two of the most likely opponents

Yeah I'd agree to that, but it's still a long ways off from what the team has expected of him.

Agreed that it doesn't have to be permanent. Somehow these guys are just too lovable for any coach to split them up haha. This year though there is a legitimate case that Laf is ascending towards where we need him to, finding him some PP1 time would boost his confidence and stats, and Mika hasn't been good.

I always look forward to PP2 coming out even if it's only for :29 haha.

This. You need OPTIONS for when the PP invariably goes dark. Like it did against NJ last year...

I dont even think that video room session covered half of whats improved for Lafreniere.

On the surface, all of that was good to see. The pulling up to assess the rush and options, the confidence, the pace, etc.

But there is a night and day difference in his skating power, edges, the routes he takes with and without the pucks. His body protection of the puck. His bachecking. The little escape plays he makes on the walls to maintain possession. His uncanny ability to maintain possession and convert high-difficulty passes. His reads of the play and the positions of his teammates. Patience with the puck. His shot selection and finishing ability (coming on a little late here).

Everything thing has improved and is at a higher level/pace. Some things more than others but overall he's taken a huge step this season.

Im sure hundreds of hockey fans will look at his numbers compared to Trocheck and Panarin and be underwhelmed, but its doesn't tell half the story (despite being on pace for 23-27-50 with no significant PP time). They will likely say its a result of him playing with those two, especially Panarin. With a little luck and a shooting % closer to his career average he would be approaching 60 points.

But he is heavily involved and a huge part of why that line is been one of the best in the league
